Rented it finally, and found myself pretty much enjoying it.
This was done during the 80's (I think), a co-production between Hanna Barbera and Tsuburaya Productions. So of course it's animated. Unfortunately, it never lasted beyond it's pilot episode.
The plot revolves around a strange asteroid bringing with it large (not to mention mostly hostile) monsters to our poor picked on planet *http://www.rodansroost.com/ikonboard/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sly.gif . Three Air Force pilots (2 men and 1 woman) get chosen (in classic Ultra Man fashion) by strange alien beings to become the new defenders of Earth, the Ultra Force.
The fight scenes are very cool (specially the last battle) and played out as most usual Ultraman battles go with alot of one-on-one fighting and a few beam weapons thrown about as well. Sadly, these three seem reluctant to wrassle with their opponents like their predacessors did before ("Cause gosh darnit, Ultraman loves to wrestle!"). But they make up for it with some pretty solid moves.
4 beasties rear their ugly heads in this little animated gem. A large plant monster, a very odd orb monster (with assumingly telekinetic armor surround it's most fragile part), a very harmless furry lizard type thing, and a very nasty big demonic monster at the end (looks like the hellishly evil combination of Destroyah and a Pikachu with a good amount of powers to make even Space Godzilla blush).
Would have loved to see more episodes of this interesting cartoon series, but alas, it was not meant to be.
*wonders if there are unaired episodes still lying around the Hanna Barbera or Tsuburaya Productions HQs* Definately a good little waste of time and if you're a casual or hardcore UltraMan fan, a very different take on the UltraMan mythos.
