Warner Bros interactive recently announced it would be publishing a game to go along with the new superman movie. Now, other from the fact I saw this game coming from the moment the Superman Returns movie was announced, I'm oddly curious about what they'll do with Supe in this age of consoles. I know he's had a few crappy gaming foreays in the past, but if this game is done right, it may be another great step forward in the partnership of video games and superheros.

I'm seeing the gameplay being like that of Spiderman 2, Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, and Ultimate Spiderman. A free-roaming world where you can take full advantage of the superhero's powers. Imagine flying around a free-roaming Metropolis as Superman. They'd need a GOOD flying controls for sure. Then theres the issue of Freedom in gameplay. In Hulk, you could go nuts and destroy everything without messing up the hero's character. I know some gamers are going to want to take Superman's strength and go and smash stuff up, but I think they'd not allow superman to do evil things...just because he is Superman. I'm pretty sure you could toss cars and such in boss battles, and I'd love for some great city-fighting with old Supe. Imagine brawling with one of Supe's tougher foes in a flying battle over the top of metropolis.

Whats your thoughts on this?

Actually it's style is gonna be based more around the most recent X-Box (or was it Gamecube?) Superman video game.

^There was a recent Supes game? What was it like?

Oh, and two words: Super Dick. I get to relive the greatest moments in Super Dickery!

This month's edition of Gameinformer had an article about Superman Returns the game. They are basically ripping off the formula of Spiderman 3 the game.

All in all, the game looks fun. But I'm frowning at the lack of freedom. This lack of freedom comes not from the developers, who seem to handle the character quite well, but from Superman himself. Sure you can fly around freely, but thats taking advantage of only one of Superman's powers. I mean, it seems like the only thing you can use his other powers for is fighting villains, which do not appear between levels. Superstrength, Laser Vision, and Freeze Breath are all going to waste here. On Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, you could use your powers to level everything in sight. In Superman Returns, you can't just open a can of whoop-*** on whatever you see. You have to protect the people, which really takes a chop at the Freedom factor.

Oh God damn...I wanted to kill people as Super Man! Then smirk about it like he always did, not protect them!

Well, what would be cool would be a dual hero perspective on the story like Ultimate Spiderman. Maybe a second playable character would be a superman clone created by Lex Luthor (similar to the modern Superboy). The clone could go crazy with his powers, and maybe he would have different powers than Superman. Maybe some sort of telekinetic energy beam rather than Heat Vision or something like that. The clone would follow his own path through the story, eventually facing off with Superman as a final boss fight.

Meh, Bizarro is imcompetent for a playable character in a game as epic as EA is attempting. I mean, he wears a sign that says "Bizarro #1" around over his 'S' emblem.:hmmm:

DO YOU REALLY NEED OPEN FREEDOM IN EVERY GAME NOWADAYS???? Geezus, shut up and just PLAY the game for a change. There's a concept for ya. Same with all those multiplayer obsessed games... where they seem to take that more seriously than the game's storyline at times.

It looks badass if you ask me, huge open city to fly around, no web swinging, no leaping, sounds like that alone will be fun. I'm sure they're going to give you the ability to use Superman's other powers... it'd be retarded to not do so.

I just hope they remember to not let "joe blow normal crook" hurt Superman. Kinda takes away from the Super Moniker.

Bah, I wanted to kill Lois and marry Jimmy of to a chimp...

Oh well, as long as I get to beat the hell out of bad guys in mid air, I'll be happy.

There are no annoyances like purse-snatchers or carjackers, only foes that are worthy of a superhero's attention.

And on your comment about open freedom, Superman Returns is a level-based game, and you can just fly around or explore between levels.

Sorry for the necromancy, but I have some news on this game from my GameInformer I received in the mail today. While it was delayed recently, here is some news that will make this game worth paying for: Bizarro as a playable character.

That may not make you jump immediately, but in Superman Return the Game, Bizarro will have all of the powers and capabilities Superman has, but Bizarro can freely trash the city and not worry about whatever threat may be looming over Metropolis.

So yes Burkion, you get to be a Super-Dick.

Oh yeah! The popular Ultimate Spiderman game.

Do I smell ripping off?

Yes. Yes I do.

Yes. Yes I do.

Ultimate Spider-Man was centered around the dual heroes, the playable Bizarro in Superman Returns looks like he will just be optional and playable for fun, to give the players a break from the forcedly-heroic gameplay of Superman.

I can't watch that video, can someone tell me what happens in the video and what Bizarro is like in it? I've heard he is playable, and I want to know if he is being portrayed as being awesome enough to warrant playability.
