The SPFX are pretty much on par with, at the very least, the Showa Gameras. It also has a pretty generic storyline...but, hey, I enjoyed it. More effort was put into it than in some other kaiju films.

Effects are garbage, no, sh-t is more like it. But the movie itself is a ton of fun, and there's a lot of action with Yongary. He takes on the military on several occasions, and has a rather lengthy city destruction sequence. In all it's not meant to be a phenominal movie, just an entertaining one.

It's a fun movie, flawed to be sure, reminds me of the 60's Gamera films. I watch it 1-2 times a year. The design for Yongary is, I think, fairly good. The effects sadly, are not. Still a must for any kaiju movie collector I would think.

I was curious about the original Yonggary movie. What was up with the ending? I mean how he died. WTF was going through the minds of the writers to show that?

Why? How did he die?

*clears throat* Well after being doused with this odd powder, Yonggary stunbled around then collapsed into the river. The for some reason it shows him bleeding from the rear. What's with that?

The only reason it gets a 4 out of 6, is the stupid kid action. Surprisingly good, though. Watch it.

I think the death scene was suppose to protray a true animalistic demise. To be fair, it's probably the only effect in the whole movie that works.

Yeah, but then why the rectal bleeding? That part I didn't get.

Yeah, but then why the rectal bleeding? That part I didn't get.
I sort of assumed that whatever chemical they dumped on him caused his insides to begin to liquify, ebola-style.
It's pretty nasty no matter how you think about it, though.

The same week that South Korea’s DRAGON WARS began its US theatrical run, that country’s first giant monster movie received a long-overdue official Region 1 DVD release. YONGARY, MONSTER FROM THE DEEP (1967)— described as “the quintessential giant monster movie of Korea” — is now available as a “MGM Midnite Movies” double-feature disc with the British giant ape picture KONGA (1961).

SciFi Japan takes a look back at the making of the movie and presents information never before available in English. Rounding out our coverage is an interview with James Owsley, the former Director of Technical Services for MGM and the man who supervised the new widescreen transfer and DVD of YONGARY, MONSTER FROM THE DEEP.
