We've got our 24/7 CNN-type satellite news coverage to keep us up to the minute on what's happening near and far - provided it's what the media considers "newsworthy". On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are a lot of stories that don't even make the local dailies/weeklies or the 6 O'clock News on Ch. 2-24.
The above is from an article (http://www.azcentral.com/news/columns/articles/1024montini24.html) on the Internet. The nice thing about this option is that we don't have to rely on "catching" a broadcast. At our leisure, we can simply go to news sources and search engines online and see what they might be hitting on.
THIS (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12810262/) is what started the "Let's look at Arizona" idea and our new GEOGRAPHY sub-forum. A rather minor "odd ball" article but you have to know a little about the area to appreciate where the protesters might be coming from. As well, Sauron and Morgoth are out there. :look:
Why Geography? How many times have we heard that today's citizens are seriously cartographically challenged? That's PC for "can't read a map" or have any idea about WHERE the places that do make the news might be located. Place names give us a sense of community and membership in society to a great degree, I believe, from one-horse towns to the great metropolises.
There is a lot of "pride in place" out there, as well as history. Some of it is still in the making! ;) Want to discuss a particular town, state or country? This is the forum to do it.
