Incredibly awesome news if it pans out; a great way to recognize the big guy's 50th b-day. According to info elsewhere on Rialto's site, they release their films on DVD via the Criterion Collection. That long-rumored Criterion G'54 DVD may happen yet!

Responding to a few posts in this thread...
Quote[/b] ]And they OBVIOUSLY have to subtitle it, right?
They're using Toho's subtitled version, the same one that has been shown twice in LA in recent years.
Quote[/b] ]Wioll the Criterion one be Widescreen and the Japanese version?
Criterion is not involved at this point, and the original Japanese version is not filmed in widescreen either.
Quote[/b] ]I hope it hits nation wide and not just at G-fest.
Plans are for screenings at Landmark Theaters across the country.
Quote[/b] ]WOOT! The good news dosent stop a' flowing! God, I hope TriStar dose not get a hold of it....
Mike Schlesinger at Sony (aka Colmbia/TriStar) helped set up the deal between Rialto and Toho. With some exceptions Sony has done a lot of good things for Godzilla/Toho in the US.
It would be nice if people actually aknowledged that once in awhile instead of constantly complaining. http://www.rodansroost.com/ikonboard/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hmmm.gif

Not announced yet, except for "2004" and "in theaters across the US".
Quote[/b] ]And is this the original edit BEFORE the added scenes with Raymond Burr??
Yes.
Quote[/b] ](tho', seeing THAT version in widescrean would ALSO be awsome! )
GODZILLA was filmed 3 years before Toho started making widescreen films. It, GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN, HALF HUMAN, and RODAN are meant to be seen in the fullscreen.

You jest. I'm not leaving a land of free health care and beer at 18 just to see Godzilla! I'll buy a big-screen TV, turn out all the lights, get some popcorn, some friends, and watch the original Godzilla in my very own living room/family room. See, and I don't even have to leave home! And for the full theatre experience? Booming speakers! And I'll drive my family out of the house!

I won't leave true health care either but I dont drink so the beer wouldnt bother me. But it would be pretty rocking when/if they do this, but Im not sure if the theater where I live would get it but I got high hopes because they got Godzilla 2000. Which actually shocked me because I live in a small town and we usually got sucky movies.

Even though so many of us first saw Godzilla, King of the Monsters and years later the original, I think you'll be impressed with the film as it was meant to be seen. The word "epic" that is being mentioned regarding the 50th anniversary production comes to mind, in story, visuals and presentation. I think GOJIRA holds up very well over the years myself, despite technical advances in film making and highly recommend it to ALL fans of great movies!
Melkor
January 3rd, 2004, 10:37 PM
Well that's good to hear. Can't wait. And Gorjirus, both versions had their ups and downs: the American version had a more realistic feel to it, thanks to the narration, while the original Japanese version was more of a love story, with the monster being sort of a third party. I prefer the original version myself, though the American dub was not without its merits.
Peace,

<font color='#FF0000'>The thing to do is to check Rialto's website for Landmark theater locations and find one nearest you. Henshinonline's article has a link to Rialto, so you can look there. If you locate a nearby Landmark theater, contact them and ask them to book the film (if they haven't already).

PLEASE READ THIS AGAIN: "Rialto will lease GODZILLA to any legit theaters that want it. If you want to see it on the big screen tell your local theater to contact Rialto and get it." So instead of complaining or whining you should contact your local theaters and tell them to book it.
Some "fans" just amaze me. A respected company has picked up the original GODZILLA and is giving the movie it's first nationwide release in 50 years and what do they have to say about it.... ? "GOD DAMN YOU RIALTO". http://www.rodansroost.com/ikonboard/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nonono2.gif

Quote[/b] (Gorjirus @ Feb. 06 2004,04:18)]I think that he is mad because Rialto is not making it a wide release. Which it should, so that I could see it. Grrr....
Rialto is releasing the movie all over the country... how much wider does it need to be?
You have to remember that GODZILLA is a 50 year old black-and-white movie in Japanese. No matter who released it, it will never play in the same multiplexes showing movies like LORD OF THE RINGS and THE MATRIX. Rialto is giving GODZILLA the same kind of treatment that rereleases of US classics like LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and GONE WITH THE WIND get and for that they should be thanked, not insulted. I constantly see fans complaining how the companies never take them seriously. So a company steps up to the plate and gives us the first nationwide release of GODZILLA in 50 years and what do they get in return? "GOD DAMN YOU RIALTO, YOU BETTER RELEASE IT ON DVD IF U KNOW WHATS GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "
So once again, Rialto will lease GODZILLA to any legit theaters that want it. If you want to see it on the big screen tell your local theater to contact Rialto and book it. You should not ask your local multiplex or any theater that just runs new movies; you need to check with arthouse, second-run, or theaters that show old movies. If they're not interested that's not Rialto's fault. They can't force theaters to show GODZILLA.

That's easy; because a theater in Arizona didn't book it. Rialto can't force theaters to run it.
Another thing, despite what Fangoria wrote that's not the complete list. Rialto sent me alist of cities where it is playing in August (see the article on Henshin! Online) and the theatrical run is supposed to continue thru October... so AZ may get it yet.

Yo Gulam, Guilala, and any other Michigan peeps:
The Detroit date listed at Henshin! Online is incorrect. *H!O lists June 16-18. * Rialto's site (http://www.rialtopictures.com/godzilla.html) lists July 16-18 (but their date is mixed in with the June's). *I emailed Rialto about this, and they have verified that July 16-18 is the correct date for Godzilla at the DFT. *See ya there!
KPA Keith:
I also emailed the correction to H!O.
Everyone else:
G'54 is playing July 2-15 in Chicago. *This overlaps with G-Fest (July 9-11), so people going to the con can also make a side trip to catch G'54 in Chi-town. *You may even want to *organize group trips to make things easier.

It's not in Arizona yet. Bummer...
On the other hand, it's playing in San Diego, but I am about two hours away from it, so I may not see it again.
