Any fan's of 50's and 60's DC Comics will drool over this fantastic book.

The bulk of this story is set late 50's on an alternative DC Universe where the golden age blends into the silver age (no Earth-2 here). After WW2, the government has encouraged super powered heros to "stand down" and replaces them with non-super heros.. such as The Challengers of the Unknown, Suicide Squad (Task Force X), etc.

There is pleanty of typical 50's "Red Scare" plot lines, as well as anti-mutant and anti-alien themes as well. As the title suggests, "The New Frontier" (a tag line used by JFK to herald in the space age) depicts the decline of the golden age heros and the rise of the silver age.

Giant monster lovers will enjoy the weaving of classic series like "The War that Time Forgot" -- which pitted WW2 GI's against dinosuars on a Pacific island, the Challengers, Sea Devils, and Suicide Squad.

The story and art are are outstanding, and the ultimate edition has a whole chapter of gallery pin-ups and annotations. Writer/Illustrator Darwyn Cooke is at his best here. The ultimate edition is a bit pricey - it goes for $75 retail - but you can pick it up on Amazon for about $47 (the trade paperback is also avaliable on Amazon for about $20).

I would love to hear anyone else's opinion of this great story.
