Well its ABOUT DAMN TIME us Michiganders got something cool! Each Saturday for a whole 7 weeks, the Detroit Institute of Arts will be playing CREATURE DOUBLE FEATURES with one GODZILLA movie and one HARRYHAUSEN movie. Tickets are $5 per showing or $25 for a pass to all the shows. The schedule is as follows.

Starting this Saturday:

June 16- 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH and SON OF GODZILLA

June 23- JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS and BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE

June 30- EARTH VS THE FLYING SAUCERS and MOTHRA

July 7- MYSTERIOUS ISLAND and GODZILLA X MEGAGUIRUS

July 14- IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA and GOJIRA (1954)

July 21- THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD and GODZILLA vs. THE SEA MONSTER

July 28- FIRST MEN IN THE MOON and GODZILLA VS KING GHIDORAH

And guess what? All the movies will be in Japanese with English subtitles, except for Battle In Outer Space, Mothra, and Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, which will be dubbed.

THIS IS AMAZING. I'm SO EXCITED. All the years of us here in Detroit waiting have payed off. I also wasn't excited to see Stuart Galbraith (who is from my home town of Livonia) was involved... cool.

In addition, the Redford Theater is playing the original King Kong on July 20th and 21st (www.redfordtheatre.com)

Its a great year to be a kaiju fan in Michigan!!!

This is officially the coolest series of film screenings ever. I'm going to be at every damn one of them (except for G-Fest weekend).

It's worth it for kaiju fans in the Detroit area to keep an eye on the DFT schedule. That's where I first saw Gamera GOTU back in '97, and they dedicated a whole weekend to Gojira in 2004.

BTW, I have a big update on this at DMI. Go check it out, and I'll see all you Motown mofos there.

Just got back from the 20 Million Miles To Earth/Son of Godzilla showing and it was bloody fantastic. Both films were new, mint condition, beautiful prints and both films got great crowd reception (slightly more so for SoG).

Can't wait for the rest. Next week is JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS and BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE. WOO HOO.

By the way it was nice meeting you for like 5 minutes. Hope you guys had as much fun as we did.

Just wanna mention that the Redford Theatre will be screening King Kong this weekend (Friday at 8:00 PM and Saturday at 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM). The Redford is a volunteer run theater in the Detroit area and every cent from ticket sales, raffles and snacks go into the restoration of the theater. Its a great place dedicated to old cinema. I've seen many classics on the big screen there (The Beatles Hard Days Night, The Thing From Another World, Frankenstein, Jaws, etc.).

I strongly encourage anyone in the area to go (but not at the Saturday 2 PM screening since that's when the DIA has their double features)

And by the way, the double features at the DIA have been kicking all kinds of ***.

The DIA is doing more monster movie double features this year. All on the big screen in wonderful new prints. This time there aren't any Toho movies, but there's still some good ones:

June 28th: The Giant Claw and Creature with the Atom Brain

July 5: The Deadly Mantis and the Monolith Monsters

July 12: Creature from the Black Lagoon and It Came From Outer Space (both in 3-D)

July 19th: Harryhausen's Golden Voyage of Sinbad and Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger

I'm gonna at least have to make it out to the Sinbads, and I'd love seeing the Giant Claw in the theater! :D
