<font color='#0000FF'>BTW, there's a interesting Tv show called the 'Hillarious House of Frightenstein&quot;.... it aired in the late 70's
but good old VP recited poetry in every episode.... it was fun if not ridiculous.

oh and it was filmed in My town..

The Abominable Dr. Phibes

This is one of my personal favorites of the films Vincent Price did and he was very fond of it also! Anyone see it during its initial release? His characterization in this very stylish and somewhat gruesome revenge tale left a lot of jaws hanging open! The character was created specifically for Price who is noted for lots of horror characters and tortured Poe anti-heroes but Phibes was an original. Anton Phibes is one of Price's finest and most unusual horror characterizations. The film took a major gamble in taking away the most distinctive part of Price - his voice but the eerie sound of his boxed voice coming from the gramaphone is a classic.
The opening War March of the Priests through the sound system was an added treat. The first VHS and Laser disc releases left a lot to be desired but with the restoration of its soundtrack, the piece is in its full glory.
As to who Vulnavia is/was (Virginia North in the original and Valerie Kemp in 'Rises Again'http://www.kaijuphile.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif, Paul Clemens wrote a story treatment for a third PHIBES film, THE SEVEN FATES OF DR. PHIBES that Price was very interested in and the revelation as to who the mute beauty is is something of a surprise. (It can also be found in the HOUSE OF PHIBES yahoo group.)

Dr. Phibes Rises Again

How does he come back for a sequel now that he embalmed himself? Is he truly among the undead? Besides, all of the doctors died in the first movie. What was the deal with the boat if you only saw part of it on AMC?

Phibes DOES impossibly comes back to life (the blood is pumped back in his body as the embalming fluid is sucked out and machines whirl to life, starting his heart again.) He rises and finds that his house has been destroyed and his precious map to the River of Life (a mystic river in Egypt where he hopes to bring his dead wife back to life again) has been stolen by the mysterious millionaire, Biederbeck (played by AIP's newest horror star, Robert 'Count Yorga' Quarry.
It was common knowledge that there was bad blood between them. In fact, it's revealed that Price was suspicious of Quarry taking over his crown at AIP. A younger big shot horror star was threatening to Price!
Price and Quarry, in adjoining make up rooms for Rises Again, saw Quarry singing loudly in his chair while, Price, who underwent quite a bit of make-up as Phibes, sat quietly.

Quarry: &nbsp; You didn't know I was a singer, too, did you, Vincent?
Price: Well, I knew you weren't a f*@cking actor! &nbsp;

So Biederbeck and Phibes race to the River of Life to claim their prize. &nbsp;Biederbeck brings a large team so Phibes has a lot more killing to do.
The ending is classic with Vincent Singing 'Somewhere Over the &nbsp;Rainbow'! It was supposedly replaced in the earlier video/DVD versions due to copyright problems. The present one has it but it is a very bare-boned dvd with just the theatrical trailer and subtitles. It is a part of the Midnight Movies from MGM so the purchase price is $9.99.

Caroline Munro mentioned at the last Monster Bash that she was approached recently about a sequel using HER character coming back to life.

Vincent Price was awesome. He had the most perfect mannerisms, the perfect voice for horror, and the greatest expressions. Truelly a legend that is still missed.

Sadly I'll be giving the box set a pass, as I own everything in it except the bonus disc and 'Witchfinder General' - at least in Region 1 format. Since 'Witchfinder' is going to be released individually, well, that settles that. They should have stuffed the box set with a few other unreleased Vincent Price DVDs, such as 'Master of the World', 'Diary of a Madman', or even the other Dr Goldfoot movie. Hell, even 'The Mad Magician' from 1958 would have been a welcome release.

Of course, while I'm passing on the Vincent Price box, another re-release has me. 'The Fly' is being released in a box set with BOTH of its sequels, marking the first time the very obscure 1965 film 'Curse of the Fly' with Brian Donlevy will be available on the home market.

September is going to be one very expensive month.

Here's what is getting ready to decimate me next week:

Classic Sci-Fi Collection Volume 2: Dr Cyclops, The Land Unknown, The Leech Woman, Cult of the Cobra, The Deadly Mantis (a BestBuy exclusive)

The Fly Collection: The Fly, Return of the Fly, The Curse of the Fly

The Lost World (1960)

The Food of the Gods

Witchfinder General

The Return of Dracula/The Vampire

Phantom from 10,000 Leagues/Beast with a Million Eyes

Gorilla at Large/Mystery on Monster Island

Devil of Darkness/Witchcraft

Tales from the Crypt/The Vault of Horror

All on the same blasted day! Months of nothing in the way of classic sci-fi and horror releases, then we get one huge blast.

Others in the upcoming two months: From Beyond the Grave (Sept 25th), Dracula (BBC version, Sept 25th), Fox Horror Classics Collection: The Lodger (1944), Hangover Square, The Undying Monster (Oct 9th), Frankenstein (1973 Dan Curtis production, Oct 30th), Sam Katzman Collection: The Giant Claw, The Werewolf, Creature with the Atom Brain, Zombies of Mora Tau (Oct 16th); Black Sabbath (Oct 23rd), and Black Sunday (Oct 23rd). Hopefully this time around 'Black Sabbath' will have the US version, with Boris Karloff's real voice and the much better arrangement of story segments. Also another Bestbuy exclusive in October - The Universal Classic Horror Film Archive which has 'Night Monster', 'Horror Island', 'Captive Wild Woman', 'The Black Cat' (1941) and 'Man Made Monster', Lon Chaney Jr's first horror picture.

:O

Morgoth, I bow before your godliness.(insert bowing up and down smilie here)

Yet another box set that escaped my attention. But since it is a Best Buy exclusive I think I can forgive myself for that one. Wasn't the box set that had 'Tarantula', 'The Mole People', 'The Incredible Shrinking Man', 'The Monolith Monsters', and 'Monster on Campus' considered volume 1 and also a Best Buy exclusive? If so, cool! Let's hope that they keep this up, it's about damn time that they got something good back into their sci-fi/horror section again.

Hey, they can't all be winners. Actually, getting that film is simply to have an example of the racist attitude of American movie critics in regards to the effects work of Toho and the Japanese in general. The 1960 version of 'The Lost World' with its heinous matte work, lizards with fins glued to them and abyssmal direction was considered 'academy award winning' at the time. Yeah, in the same year Toho put out 'Mothra'. Just compare the complexity and craftsmanship of the two and you'll see something is rotten in Denmark. And I'm not talking about Reptilicus.

The other reason is simply that I grew up with this turkey and like grade-Z dreck like 'King Dinosaur', I have a bit of a soft spot for it. Some of the performances are pretty good too. Just wish they'd killed that ******* poodle!
