View Full Version : Debate Style as Fighting Style
Cole Deschain
August 28th, 2007, 07:44 PM
All right... we all know that we alllll like to think of debating in combative terms (especially when Tom and Jeff and tearing bloody strips out of each other).
So.
Just for the sheer amusement value of it....
If each debater's style was turned into physical combat, what would it look like?
Ideally, do more than one at a time... and no fair doing yourself. ;)
Saruman- I see a lot of straightforward but powerful strikes. Not a lot of subtlety, just overwhelming power (all those damn screencaps). Superb on offense, a little less on defense, simply because most arguments against him strike him as utterly insane.
Tomzilla- VERY similar, with a lot of powerful arguments, but a bit more playful. Also, of course, he often ends up opposite of Saruman. They're like Ken and Ryu- they play similarly, but butt heads a lot.
Pyras Terran- It's been a while since we really saw Pyras do his thing.... and, appropriately enough, I'd say he "fights" in a tentacular style- A lot of swift jabs coming from all angles. Now, the thing is, sometimes the individual strikes lack oomph, but when taken as a whole, he can be a damned nuisance.
Anguiurs55- Not so big on power as he is on defense- Ang sticks to his chosen position like a damn leech. What's worse, knocking him loose is almost impossible because the bugger does his homework. You may tear down everything around him... but he'll stll be sitting where he was.

Cole Deschain - Short, sweet, and to the point.
So, would probably skip the BS and just pull out a gun.

Ok....I'll do EM. He swings wildy (With moddest aim) and hopes he connects a punch or 2 (which he usually does, but he doesn't connect with all of them).
I calls 'em as I sees 'em.

Best topic ever... I will do the Top 5 debators in my opinion.
Saruman: Brutal. As brutal as it comes. He would probably rip flesh off the bone when he is debating something. If anything, he reminds me of like a supervillain of debating.
Tomzilla: Tom is just like Saruman when it comes to debating. But he is on the light side of things. He doesn't rip flesh off the bone, he just attack relentlessly. Seeing as he is Saru's arch nemisis, I would say that he is like the hero. since he is easier to get into a non brutal debate against... <.<
Anguirus55: He is just agressive. He will defend his cause no matter what. Out of all the debators, his style is more cut throat I would say. Almost as brutal as Saruman. And Cole pretty much nailed it on the head, he is HARD to knock off his perch...
Cole Deschain: DS got it. Short, sweet, to the point. He will just pull out a pistol and blast away. He doesn't play games.
Gorjirus: I have no idea. But to somehow ALWAYS get people to vote for Charles Barkley in a match he HAS to be up here. Maybe he is just an insane guy... >.>

Gor is the kind of guy that seems to be doing crazy *** things in a fight that sorta confuse you untill all of a sudden you end up with a knife in your head and the last thought in your head is, Wtf just happened?

Orga777: Well... not much for *me* to say... but I guess your kinda like... there (not in a bad way of course).
Ang55: Relentless, not very powerful on offense or defense... but you'd better know your in for one long *** debate when facing him. I've traded blows with him before I believe... and it was brutal...
Saruman: I've only heard what this guy does to his opponents... and thank God! I'd hate to be on the recieving end of this guy's scathing remarks... and he is fully defended by his magnificent knowledge of all things Kaiju...
TomZilla: I'd put him as see above... but with like... THE ultimate knowledge on daikaiju...
Now... can some one do me?

You have no style.
Or class. ;)
Honestly, Orga.... based upon your scraps with Gor in the LPTs....
You're very good at following one thread- now, this hamstrings you when something else is thrown into the mix, but in a straight-up tussle, you manage admirably.
However, you're not always adept at responding to a change in tactics, although you CAN adapt if a tactic is used consistently.
So in short, well-rounded, but sometimes single-minded.

I'm lost as to what a LPT.
And GMK12, I think you need to debate more. You are the eager rookie.
I dub thee, grasshopper. Debate more, and better you will become. The better you are, the more respect you will recieve.
I shall contact you for training.

There was once a time when there was more than Iron Man. And now, Iron Man seems to be the only thing to debate.

Remember that 4 page team battle debate we had one day, which centered on a flying ZF Gigan vs Showa Gamera?

Oh yeah, you're spot on.
More Lair...
I think I could stand to come up with a few.
Saruman: Originally, I was convinced that he was an arrogant bully who could never look at something from more than one perspective, but recently I've come to like the guy a bit more. Our debate into the Gamera vs. Kiryu-Goji thread was one of the most fun I've had in months, because we were able to joke around with each other while maintaining a very serious and thoughtful discussion. I have to hand it to him, Saruman's knowledge of science, biology, physics and all that is really amazing, and it definitely helps him appear intimidating in some arguments.
Tomzilla: Tom is to Kaiju as Spongebob is to the Krusty Krab; he loves his hobby way too much. He's easily one of the most monster-enthusiastic people I've ever seen, and his debates show just how interested he is in the genre. His dedication to studying and understanding specific Kaiju is unmatched.
anguirus55: Ang's that guy that would bet on the Texans beating the Colts, or the Columbus Bluejackets winning the Stanely Cup. He always thinks outside of the box and is never affected by what the majority says. The impressive part is, he defends his picks extremley well, so that even if you think he's had a few too many drinks, you have to respect him.

Saruman: Jeff is akin to the school bully, pinning some stick boy on the ground with his girth while pounding his face in with a giddy smile on his face. He then adds insult to injury with a few loogies to the face and then farts on the kid while they are down. He then proceeds to take his victim's lunch money to use it to buy more hair gel for his sweet mullet he sports.
I haven't debated in a long while, can't really say for myself how I would be.

Indeed Master Parker... Now I had to *actually* research this so please comment...
Saruman: Eskrima ( I see Saru as bringing his facts [symbolized by Eskrima's weapons] to a fight while everyone else brings their fists.)
EternalMothra: I see Master Donny utilizing "Zui Quan" (Drunken Boxing). He seems to have a rather unorthodox pattern in his attacks and like mentioned earlier, jumps into battle without hesitation.
Cole Deschain: I see Master Cole, using Kickboxing.. He holds no fury back when necessary... and uses direct, and effectively hard strikes...
Me: Aikido (Simply protecting myself from injury with only necessary attacks and also looking out for the attackers well-being...)
PyrasTerran: I haven't been here long enough to be able to fully analyze Mr. Terran's style... but It seems akin to Fencing... lots of graceful and "laser-guided" strikes but with using as much caution as necessary based on his opponent...
godofPH: Iaido... he has quick retaliations... although they are rather seen "rarely" and far between... Once drawing blood with his weapon, he removes it from his blade with utter gracefulness and looks for his next opportunity elsewhere...
Seer235: I see Master Seer utilizing Bruce Lee's very on Jeet June Do... he has utmost mental presence in any debate and he throws unnecessary "tradition" out of his style...
And that's all the research I've done so far... I haven't gone TOO into it mind you, but this is what I see in you all right now... I'll try and add more later...
