We don't have a topic for this yet for some reason.
Well, the Patriots look unbeatable as always, and this looks like it is their best team yet!
Colts are looking good, even though they are in a MUCH improved divion (Houston, J-Ville, and Tennessee all look like they can contend this year.)
And Pitt looks like the team that one the Super Bowl two years ago.
Dallas appears to be as good as they appear. I want them to play a more complete team before I annoit them the best of the NFC though. SO far they played an all offense no defense Giants, a terrible Miami team, and an all defense no offense Bears team. They play New England in a few weeks. That will show how good they are.
Now that the elite is out of the way...
But the Saints... man, they are not looking good this year. Starting off 0-2 and are losing 10-7 at half time right now. With all that talent they should be better than that.
Another team that has all teh talent in the world as is playing well under their abilities are teh San Diego Chargers. They are 1-2 and LT is not yet on track. How much can be blamed on the new coahing staff though? Because Norv Turner is no Marty Shottenheimer.
Seattle is looking good. Minus that one fluke mess up against Arizona, they would be 3-0 right now. But that is for the best. The last two times they started 3-0 (2004 and 2006) they ended up going 9-7 and got swept by a team in their divison (04 Rams and 06 49ers.) They went 2-2 in 2005, ended up 12-4, and went to the Super Bowl. Who needs a fast start?
I had Tampa as one of my sleepers (and always do after they do bad) and now I think they will win teh division the way they are playing defense. Jeff Garcia is also proving to be a good QB which is something Gruden hasn't had since he coached Rich Gannon at Oakland.
Chicago needs to do smoething about their QB situation. They can't rely on the defense all the time. Especially now that they are banged up like they are. Lovie Smith needs to work something out. And FAST if he wants to outfight the surprise of the year, the Green Bay Packers.
Green Bay was my pick to win the North this year and that pick looks to be justified. Favre is playing his best ball in YEARS. If their defense holds out and Favre plays as he is now for the rest of the season, they are going to be a contender. They do need to get a running game on track though. Not having Ahman Green is going to hurt the team down the road.
Well, that about covers the overview I have so far of the 07 season. Now lets get this discussion on track shall we?;)

The Texans are good though. They didn't have Andre Johnson for the game and they STILL only lost by six points against a very tough Colts team. I don't have then as a Wild Card quite yet (that divison is just way too good.) but they may very well NOT have a losing season this year. Maybe 8-8 or even 9-7.
Well, I can now say the Saints are a bad team. They are getting smoked AGAIN. Maybe it all was smoke and mirrors last year...

They should've won their last game too. Dirty tactics by the cursed ex coach killed Janikowski. Poor seabass, he's got so much power, yet he never gets the big kick.

It could be worse, guys. You could be Cincinnati at 1-2. You can score like crazy against the Browns, still losing. You could be ahead of Seattle with a few minutes to go and give up a touchdown and then fumble the kickoff on your last chance to score.
And you could be facing the cheating and insanely talented New England team this Sunday. Here's to a no camera-filled day!

I don't know, I think a lot of people are still kind of underestimating them but with the recent trend of injuries right now it could go either way. They could just collapse or they could persevere and make it to the playoffs. Still too early to tell but I hope for the latter.

Tom Brady is only about 29 and has already one three Super Bowls and will probably win his fourth. At such a young age to do that means he can definitly hang with the greats of history.
I mean, really.
WHO have they played?
Oh.
Right.
Cole, this shouldn't even be HAPPENING in this day and age with Salary Caps and Free Agency. There was SUPPOSED to be parody in the NFL with no one team getting the edge over another and was supposed to eliminate the same team winning countless Super Bowls so close together like this. But even WITH all that The 2007 new England Patriots have put together a team so impressive that they shattered offensive records AND went undefeated. To do that in THIS day and age DOES make them the best team. Because unlike those 70's Steelers, the '72 Dolphins, etc. their is actually stuff in place that was supposed to prevent this from happening.

While you seem to have your regular distate for things aimed at the teams in the NFL, you still have to realise that the general level of play (and ability) is much greater than it used to be. The better teams of today would just run through the great teams of yesteryear (like say, the '72 Dolphins; I think the Colts would rip that No-Name Defense apart). The further back the team comes from, the harder it would be for them to win against today's teams.
Cole Deschain
January 23rd, 2008, 09:09 PM
Orga appears to think differently.
Oh, and I will point out that yes, today's teams could demolish yesterday's....
Because their offensive lines weight about half again as much.
Big deal.
It certainly makes them no more enjoyable to watch.
Not that it matters, since, while I utterly despise them, I can't deny the teams' ability relative to the Giants.

Um, no? Todays teams WOULD run through the teams of the past, but that is not the reason why I consider the 2007 Patriots the best team ever. The NFL had stuff in place so that the parody (which is why the Giants are in the Super Bowl) would prevent any one team from totally dominating the leauge and have a team go undefeated. But yet the Patriots STILL dominated the leauge anyway. They blew out so many teams this year that it is scary. It is impressive that they did that in this day and age. 1- It's "parity." Pardoy's what Weird Al does.
2- I don't care. Steamrolling doesn't impress me when everyone is supposed to be the same. One good player combination and mildly competent coaching, and whammo. Certainly, it's no fun to watch. Maybe if I were more of a stathead, I could muster the capacity to give a damn.

Nope. The 2007 Patriots had us all fooled. They were as mediocre as the other teams. Just more lucky. 1972 Miami Dolphins remain the best team in history as far as I am concerned.
I wouldn't write them off as 'mediocre', there is no denying their talent and they are a very good team, the Giants just wanted it more. Once people start filling your heads with the idea that you are invincible you start to lose sight of your goal, especially towards the end. And when you have an aggressive team like the Giants, who knocked out both the Cowboys and the Packers, gaining so much momentum at the tail end of the season then it's hard to suppress that and beat them. It's not like they were blown out, they lost by less than a touchdown.

I thought that Bill Belichek was the best at preventing that from happening. Turns out that not even he could survive the year of the upset, despite his legendary prep skills.

So, because a Giants reciever made a catch off his helmet on 3rd down, it knocked the Patriots from greatest team ever (they still are one of the greatest teams of all times) to mediocre?

All Super Bowl losers are nothing more than failures in the end Gor. Which means they are not the best team this year let alone one of the best teams ever. And mediocre was a strong word. What I mean is that the mediocraty that they kept at bay for so long finally caught up to them.
Although I will say this. If the Patriots had one loss in the regular season, I don't think they would have lost the Super Bowl.

Yeah, whatever Gor, think what you want. If you still think they are the best team this year go ahead. But the best team is the winner of the Super Bowl. It always has been, it always will be. Wanna know why? Because they won the damn trophy. Being nearly perfect or nearly winning the Super Bowl is not the same as winning it. I am suer the Patriots would trade this season for the Giants season if it means winning the Super Bowl. That is just the way it is.

But the best team is the winner of the Super Bowl.
This is ALSO a stupid statement.
What about the Steelers a couple years back? They won. Were they the best team?
Not really.
Remember all that about the refs? They impact games (like the pass interference Sunday that wasn't called).
What about the the Steeler lineman rolled on Palmer's leg, taking him out of the game? You don't think that helped their chances in that game? Does that make them the better team?
Being a great team isn't by itself the judge of great teams.
Especially since it was agreed earlier in the thread that teams now could beat up on teams of the past. Who *gasp* won Super Bowls.
And what about the Bills, who reached the Super Bowl a record 4 straight years? They never won, but they are one of the better team in NFL history.
Being nearly perfect or nearly winning the Super Bowl is not the same as winning it.
The Super Bowl is one game. Not the measure of an entire team.
I am suer the Patriots would trade this season for the Giants season if it means winning the Super Bowl.
That because winning the championship is more important than being the best team.

Instead of being the greatest team of all time they become the greatest team never to win a superbowl.... Despite the fact they've already won quite a few.

Nah, the bills still have that. The Patriots of this decade have been the most clinch team in recent memory, or do we need to examine their last three superbowl runs. No? Then I guess I don't have to bring up the last time the Raiders were in the superbowl.

What about the Steelers a couple years back? They won. Were they the best team?
Not really.
I wouldn't say that. Their defense was fantastic and their offense was very consistent. And since they beat all the good teams in the AFC in the playoffs and beat Seattle in the Super Bowl then yes, they were the best team. They proved that too.
Remember all that about the refs? They impact games (like the pass interference Sunday that wasn't called).
There was an issue with the refs in that game.... But I can't make excuses for Seattle. They still lost. Jeremy Stevens DID drop a sure Touchdown pass in the end-zone (because he is a bum) and Josh Brown still missed two field goals. If all those were made Seattle would have won by two points. It wasn't just the refs.
What about the the Steeler lineman rolled on Palmer's leg, taking him out of the game? You don't think that helped their chances in that game? Does that make them the better team?
Ok, that was a freak accident. I definitly have to agree there since I was pretty sure Cinci had a good shot to go all the way to the Super Bowl that year. But we can't say for certain if the Steelers would have lost that game. They did beat them earlier in the year after all.
Especially since it was agreed earlier in the thread that teams now could beat up on teams of the past. Who *gasp* won Super Bowls.
That is only because of the size advantage that todays teams have though Gor. If you take that away and todays teams advantage is gone.
The Super Bowl is one game. Not the measure of an entire team.
The Super Bowl is the championship. The best team wins it. And lets look at this years Super Bowl. The Giants beat Tampa, Dallas, and Green Bay. The 4, 1, and 2 seeds in the NFC then they go face the undefeated New England Patriots and beat them as well. How can they NOT be considered the best team in the league after that gauntlet? Who else can say they beat the Patriots, especially in the game that matters most? The Giants were best when it mattered most, and THAT is why they are the best team this year.

No, you also have a strength advantage. And an intelligence advantage.
You take a team from today, play them against the 60's Packers, and the Packers would be going up against things they would never have seen. Today's teams have all the knowledge of plays of the past years, combined with the new that we have today.
The Super Bowl is the championship. The best team wins it.
Not true.
You can never say 100% that the best team wins a single game played every time, no matter what that single game is.
How can they NOT be considered the best team in the league after that gauntlet?
Because a great run doesn't make a great team. If they were the best team in the league, how come they were a 5 seed?
They are a good team, sure, and they had a great run. But they aren't the best team this season.
The Giants were best when it mattered most, and THAT is why they are the best team this year.
No, it means they won the game that mattered the most. That doesn't make them the best.
When you win by 1 freak play and 1 blown call, that hardly automatically makes you the best.
Which is why a Championship series is ALWAYS better at determing a true champion and the better team. It doesn't make for better entertainment all the time, but it is better at doing its job.

The regular season is useless in the playoffs. If it mattered we might as well have it like the BSC.:sarcasm:
And they were the 5 seed because some games didn't go their way (and Eli has terrible games at home.)
They are a good team, sure, and they had a great run. But they aren't the best team this season.
Who is then, the Patriots? Who beat who?:eh:
No, it means they won the game that mattered the most. That doesn't make them the best.
Like hell it doesn't.
When you win by 1 freak play and 1 blown call, that hardly automatically makes you the best.
The catch was hard, but it was caught. And I have seen player do what Eli did before so it isn't that much of a freak play. Maybe if the Patriots, you know, broke the play up or got to Eli better we would be discussing something different right now. But again, who else can say they beat the Patriots?
Which is why a Championship series is ALWAYS better at determing a true champion and the better team. It doesn't make for better entertainment all the time, but it is better at doing its job.
Are you talking about what is done in College football Gor? Because if you are that HARDLY displays the best team. The BCS is always wrong and that was proven this year, last year, and pretty much every year for the most part.

Touche... But the fact still remains. The Giants won and are the best team in the end of it. Were they lucky? Sure. But that one game is for everything and the Patriots (most specifically the offense) did not come up to the task.

Don't know how many sports fans there are on here, I know theres a few, and a few Packer fans at that, but for anyone who didn't know Brett Favre Packers QB for almost two Decades Retired today. I'm pretty down about this just because he's basically all I knew when I first started watching football, I'm just glad I got the chance to see him play live two years back against Miami, Thanks for the memories Brett! We'll Miss you on that field!
