I recently purchased a book on "mysteries of the ocean" and all that jazz. In one chapter it was describing all the possibilities of what might be out there, what with how little we know about the ocean (surely some of you have heard the theorem about the "gigantic octopus" that may well have been the inspiration for the worldwide Kraken myths). As an example, it cited a few creatures which had just been discovered in the past 50 years, previously unknown to science: the megamouth shark (a relatively well-known creature for which one can find an abundance of references and pictures and information and so forth), the Japanese beaked whale, the Prudes Bay killer whale, and the cochoto porpoise. Please note the bolded names.

I have not been able to find ANY information about these three animals, much less pictures. I've scoured the internet, poured over various animal reference books and supposedly "complete" field guides, and found virtually nothing. Not even Wikipedia mentions their names, and all I've found on the internet are people and research articles who've cited them in the same way and to make the same point with them as the book I first heard about them in. Why is this? Are they some sort of massive, debunked hoax, some sort of vast conspiracy? The Prudes Bay killer whale was the most recent of the three and it was found as far back as 1984! The other two were found in the '60's! That's PLENTY of time to include them in any newer publications, yet they're nowhere to be seen, not a scrap of information. This is such a petty subject, so unimportant, but it's literally been driving me up the wall.

Does ANYONE know ANYTHING about them, or at least where I can find the information I've been looking for? Some book or website that FOR SURE has an entry or at least a picture for any of them? I'm afraid I've taken on an unhealthy obsession that may destroy me unless it's resolved. Please help...

There's a link the the Beaked Whales.

Here maybe some leads on the killer whale.

Good find. While in a bookstore I read about the Pygmy Killer Whale, which was apparently discovered (or rather rediscovered) in '54 (forst reported in the 1800's though) and described as a "rare porpoise" at the time, so I at first thought I had found it. Apparently I was wrong, and thank you. One down.

@GS:

Thanks for the links, but there doen't seem to be anything on the beaked whale I'm looking for (beaked whales are notoriously poorly-known, however), and the killer whale I'm looking for was discovered much more recently than the other two.

Well, at least I found one.
