Considering the vast areas and number of people affected, no doubt the federal government is going to be involved.
Any predictions about what will go wrong once the water recedes?

We ourselves have run into the levee "rating" thing already and happen to have a system ranked in the TOP ONE PERCENT IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY. The District's Chief Engineer is warning everyone of the "scam" (his word) regarding MANDATORY federal flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program which just happens to be a division of FEMA.
Guess what: It's an attempt by FEMA to recoup its debt from the Katrina/Rita mess they got themselves into. I call it BLACKMAIL (http://www.fema.gov/library/file?type=originalAccessibleFormatFile&file=f025_how.txt&fileid=67a1e080-7367-11dc-8099-000bdba87d5b) myself. Mighty convenient that according to FEMA, EVERYONE (http://www.floodsmart.gov/floodsmart/pages/your_flood_risk/flood_risk_factors.jsp) is in a floodplain all of a sudden...

I have a feeling there will be a ton of people homeless and a ton of people who will not have food.

Idk about you, but ti doesn't sound like FEMA has done anything yet about this situation. At least anything logical.

Andy Weld is the Editor of our local paper and from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Although it's been almost a month since the flooding, it isn't over when the water recedes.
You don't get coverage like this (http://thefasttalker.blogspot.com/2008/07/flood-ravaged-community-disturbing.html) on TV.

Is THIS (http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/ats-ap-flood-buyoutsjul17,0,4696103.story?track=rss) the answer? I'm thinking that in cases where it's a FACT an area is prone to problems, it should be the ones who set themselves up for damage who foot the bill.
If the government wants to use our taxpayers' money to help folks out, give it to those hit by tornadoes, falling airplanes/space junk, earthquakes and stuff the average settler is taking less risk of getting wiped out by.
