House Dems turn out the lights but GOP keeps talking The CryptFri Aug 1, 12:56 PM ET

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the Democrats adjourned the House and turned off the light and killed the microphones, but Republicans are still on the floor talking gas prices.
Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and other GOP leaders opposed the motion to adjourn the House, arguing that Pelosi's refusal to schedule a vote allowing offshore drilling is hurting the American economy. They have refused to leave the floor after the adjournment motion passed at 11:23 a.m. and are busy bashing Pelosi and her fellow Democrats for leaving town for the August recess.
At one point, the lights went off in the House and the microphones were turned off in the chamber, meaning Republicans were talking in the dark. But as Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz..) was speaking, the lights went back on, and the microphones have been turned on as well.
But C-SPAN has stopped broadcasting the House floor, meaning no one is witnessing this except the assembled Republicans, their aides, and one Democrat, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), who has now left.
Only about a half-dozen Republicans were on the floor when this began, but the crowd has grown to about 20 now, according to Patrick O'Connor.
"This is the people's House," Rep, Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) said. "This is not Pelosi's politiburo."
Democratic aides were furious at the GOP stunt, and reporters were kicked out of the Speaker's Lobby, the space next to the House floor where they normally interview lawmakers.
"You're not covering this, are you?" complaing one senior Democratic aide. Another called the Republicans "morons" for staying on the floor.
Update - The Capitol Police are now trying to kick reporters out of the press gallery above the floor, meaning we can't watch the Republicans anymore. But Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) is now in the gallery talking to reporters, so the cops have held off for a minute. Clearly, Democrats don't want Republicans getting any press for this episode. GOP leaders are trying to find other Republicans to rotate in for Blunt so reporters aren't kicked out.
Update 2 - This message was sent out by Blunt's office:
"Although, this Democrat Majority just Adjourned for the Democrat 5-Week Vacation, House Republicans are continuing to fight on the House Floor. Although the lights, mics and C-SPAN camera's have been turned off, House Republicans are on the Floor speaking to the tax payers in the gallery who, not surprisingly, agree with Republican Energy proposals.
All Republicans who are in town are encouraged to come to the House Floor."
Update 3 - Democrats just turned out the lights again. Republicans cheered.

I mean, really, shutting down talking about this with the TV watching in the middle of someone's speech is a stunt you'd expect from the days of the Consuls, not a 21st Century state. Just who the Hell does Pelosi think she is? You don't pull this **** in a republic! There's no words to really describe the level of stupid this stunt is.

Don't you just love those two-faced Democrats? This is really a shame. They are trying to get something done and this happens to them? What a bunch of crap. I have always been in the middle when it comes to the two parties, but lately I have been turning more to the Republican's side of things just because of stunts like this that the Democrats pull off.

I have always thought Bush gave the Party a bad name, and I have to stick with that. Bush may be a dolt, but that doesn't make the whole Republican party incompetent.

I hope they get what they need done despite the apparent sabotage.

I would have expected this sort of close-off-all-talking like this in a society like 19th-Century Russia or Gracchian-era Rome. This is supposed to be a more enlightened time led by those people who consider themselves the vanguard of a Cultural Revolution (to judge by commentors on liberal blogs.) Acting like 19th Century or 1st millenium BC aristocrats is not progression, it's regression.

People should come together in spite of parties or otherwise, but it often doesn't happen. Both parties look the other way when one of their own does something stupid, but would gladly point out faults of the opposing party.

And when something that makes sense needs to be passed, you should never vote it down just because it's supported by the "other" guys.

Know what is also a shame? I wonder how many news stations will pick this up... For some reason I don't think this will get out as much as it should which will leave most of the public in the dark on the situation.

I really need to start keeping up with the government news again... Thanks for posting this KK since I probably wouldn't have found out any other way due to my own idiocy for not following as closely as a should.

You also have a point, this just doesn't seem like the right thing to do in a democracy like we have today. The two parties should be trying to work together on such an important issue. But the Democrats decide to pull this stunt. ugh. This just seems way too low for me to get over... I am really annoyed by this.

That was partly because Pelosi not only shut down the House, she removed all cameras. I only knew myself because I heard it on the radio, didn't believe that any 21st Century leader would have the balls in a situation like this to pull this **** off, found it was true, and then I decided to post it here.

When it comes to oil, I actually agree with Sean Hannity for once in my life, go blitzkrieg on energy sources, with an emphasis towards getting off of oil. There's no justifiable reason to shut down media coverage, interrupt a Representative's speech, and then turn off all the lights and mikes. For some reason, that puts me in mind more of Nicholas II dissolving the Duma every time it displeased him, or the Gracchian era when the Senate of Rome tried a stunt like this and ended up with two or three civil wars. In a decently ruled society, asshattery like this doesn't happen.

I find it odd that Democrat and Republican politicians seem to hate each other so much when in reality they really aren't that much different than one another. They're greedy, selfish *******s, almost every single one of them. There are no such things as true Conservative or Liberal politicians anymore.

Hang all the *******s. Then the next batch of scum that oozes its way into power will be nervous and watching it's step. It has been way too long since this ****ing government feared its people.

Anybody want to help me start a Nationalist Party? First thing we do when we get a majority in Congress is hang all the lawyers and start the legal system from scratch as something based on justice and common sense, not to foster some multi-billion dollar 'legal industry'. Second thing we do is use the pulped remains of environmental extremists as an alternate fuel. After that, then we start horrific genetic experiments just for shits and giggles. I want my crocodile-gorilla-wolfbats weeding out the weak and unroadworthy dammit! Eat as much McDonalds as you want, fatass, just make sure you can still outrun the crocgorwolfbats!

Much too pleasant, Zigs. I would torture people so that they'd spend at least three months longing for death, but unable to die, before the real **** starts. :darklord:

In terms of political cooperation, I'd say this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxn5Qh1YW8M&feature=user) guy's got the right idea.

Hilarious, I can definately see this blowing up in the Democrats' faces. Someone should sneak cameras in there.

But apparently only one side seems to care about sensible Energy Policy, the other just wants to ignore the American People. And here I thought Liberals cared about what the polls say. :sly:
