When you were a kid did you or any of your friends ever make believe or act out your own stories or adventures? Did you pretend you were your favorite character from a movie, game or book or did you create your own characters?
Sure as children some of us had toys, video games, books, TV etc. to keep us occupied, but were there times when making up your own adventures or battles seemed like allot more fun?
Well I did, me along with friends and family.
My earliest memories were of my elementary school playground when me and a girl I knew would stage our own battles. I was Godzilla, she was King Kong and we beat the living tar out of each other. Don't worry folks she could take it, she was a foot taller than me and heavier too.
Other playground adventures saw me and friends playing Transformers(I got be Megatron!), He-man(I was battlecat)and Voltron(I always wanted to be the robeasts!) I even managed to convince my friends to do a recreation of the final battle from Destroy All Monsters!(I was Godzilla of course)
After this me and a friend did a story where he was Conan and I was somekind of serpent warrior who were enemies at first but then became friends to fight evil.
Later me and my nephews had stories where it was Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris and a human sized Godzilla(me) taking on all kinds of horror movie villains, right now though all I remember is battling the possessed car Christine, Freddy Krueger and even Satan himself!
Then, me and my niece did stories where she was She-ra and I was Godzilla challenging Hordak and the Horde.
After this me and some friends did our own version of the Saturday morning cartoon of Dungeons & Dragons.
Soon after me and a various neighbor kids did stories where we pretended were our favorite WWF wrestlers(back when we still thought it was real). My favorites were Hulk Hogan of course and an 80s tag team known as Demolition.
These scenarios went on for several years until me and one of my nephews started something new. It was Marvel comic based as I was Wolverine and my nephew was Gambit. We took on Apocalypse as he threw all kinds of obstacles at us that eventually forced us to team up with human sized versions of all of Monsterland's kaiju against a new showa Mechagodzilla constructed out of adamantium. In our stories though Apocalypse would always get away and we were never able to confront him directly.
Next was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles based story. I was the mutant mole character called Dirtbag and my nephew was Raphael. We took on the Shredder of course along with the Foot Clan, a returning Apocalypse, human sized versions of kaiju villains like Ghidorah and even Ganon from The Legend Of Zelda! We even took on a Devil possesed Mechagodzilla that was more powerful than ever before, for the final arc we teamed up with Godzilla again. This story arc ended with all the villains defeated or killed but my character died as well, this particular story arc lasted longer than any other we ever did.
Me and another friend has a scenario where we were sasquatch hunters, in our story they were terrible monsters that slaughtered poeple and had to be destroyed.
That last one I remember was one were I could transform into a human sized version of the Dragonzord from MMPR and my nephew was a super soldier of somekind, we took on Rita Repulsa and Lokar of course, battled the Hellfire Club and then teamed up with Gamera and Ultraman Great to challenge cybernetically enhanced versions of kaiju villains from the Ultraman and Gamera franchises, it ended with taking on an amalgam of King Ghidorah and Apocalypse that was created by the Shredder's daughter.
Allot of these stories got stretched out for months on end almost like soap operas as we would have to quit when it was time for either me or who I was playing with to leave depending on who was visiting who, but we'd always pick up right where we left off the next time we got bak together.
Yeah sure, it all sounds silly, but hey we were just kids trying to have fun and all we had were our imaginations to guide us seeing how we had no costumes or props to speak of.
Good times.
How about the rest of you?
