How should they go about marketing the film? Not necessarily the merchandising- toylines, shirts, animated series etc..[There is already a topic for "Merchandise"] but how should they approach marketing the film to be attractive to the hardcore fans and appeal to the mainstream general audiences that they're going to need to be successful at the same time? Viral video/websites....seeking help from the fans? Etc... Here we can share ideas;

Probably the same marketing for the 2009 Star Trek movie.

I think they did it the best way with Cloverfield. Heck, when the trailers came out a lot of people thought it was Godzilla!

For a teaser trailer, it shouldn't say Godzilla. Just end it with fade to black and all that is herad is Godzilla's roar. It says it all, you don't need the title.

Viral'd work, but people might be idiots and go "It's ripping off Cloverfield"

I think do something among the lines of Cloverfield and the 1998 Goji...

Avoiding confusion with the CLOVERFIELD sequel, or looking like your ripping off the from ground level kaiju flick is a must. You also don't want to be too overly coy about it being about Godzilla. Whoever is in charge should make priority one that no ifs, ands ,or butts that this flick is about the King of the Monsters. At least have a silhouette right at the end of the teaser of the Big-G that any audience member will instantly recognize as the one and only Godzilla instantly.

Why not a roar? The roar is one of the things that makes people think of Godzilla.

I say not only have the roar in the teaser trailer, but have the title be in the Japanese characters for Gojira.:)

As much as I hate to shoot that down but, not many people would get that. Besides, the roar just says it all. You don't need the title.
Take Batman: The Animated Series for example. The intro ends with a shot of the guy without the title. The design says it all.

I just hope JD can get somebody connected to this at G-Fest this year.

IMO, I think that the end of the trailer should end something like the end of the Godzilla: DAMM Intro, with Goji's face bursting through the title and roaring.

The promos for GINO worked very well. In some respect, I think less is more with trailers. How many times have you gone to the movies and all the major events within the film are given away by a preview? This is especially true of comedies when the best joke of the entire movie is shown in a preview...

As much as I like the idea of a teaser using only Godzilla's roar, I don't know if that would be enough. Obviously the roar is distinctive to us, but that is because we're nerds. I'm fairly sure that most of us could easily identify a few dozen other kaiju roars, too, along with the movie scenes that specific roars were used in.
The sad truth is that the King's roar has been ripped off so many times by toys, cartoons, and such that it's practically just become a generic monster sound. Would today's kids recognize it for what it really is? Some, certainly, but probably not enough.
The even sadder truth is that even a silhouette probably wouldn't be recognizable to many people. Generic-looking dinosaurs are referred to in the media as 'Godzilla' all the time, so those who haven't seen the movies may not even know what he really looks like.
So I think that, at first, anyway, his name will definitely need to be used to get people's attention.

Well, the name is likely to be used anyway.

Why buy the expensive rights if you aren't going to use the marketing leverage of the name?
If Godzilla isn;t a property that you, as a studio, think has the name recognition to get by with folks knowing what it is, then why buy the rights from Toho? Why not just make up a critter of your own?

Well, yeah, that's kind of my point. Godzilla's name is pretty much universally known, but people probably won't recognize the details as easily.
So the marketing campaign will have to put a lot of emphasis on the name to make sure that people know what is being advertised.

True. The marketing back in 1998 gave people the wrong idea about the monster.
