View Full Version : What if this film pulls a 'Godzilla Final Wars?"

I've grown up with Godzilla and kaiju films. I'm 22 and I still have VHS tapes from when I was 3-4 and started getting into Godzilla.
Now, as devout as a fan as I am, I love good films... Godzilla final wars put a terrible taste in my mouth. It bombed at the box office and the entire film was just terrible.
What if this movie (which I can't tell if it will be in japanese or not) ends up with a GFW feel? What if its kind of campy with poor sets, sounds, and monster suits? Will you be pissed? Will the film flop? Will you take it serious?
I dunno, I'm nervous for this movie.

I know what I will do. I will get up, and walk out of the theater. That is only the beginning though. The two pics BS posted above will come into affect too. Namely the 'Fan'ger one. XD

I am not nervous at all. It wont be campy with poor sets and monster suits. It will be top notch and serious. With state of the art special effects. It wont be in Japanese, why would you even think that?

You know what Orga said? Picture the exact OPPOSITE of that.
I used to show Final Wars to freshmen in my dorm to "initiate" them. Really, the parts of the film that are stupid are not the loving, campy homages to the golden age of Toho, they are all of the "we're so awesome" mutant crap. Well, an American film would likely not include that sort of "The One" Matrix/Riddick/Highlander stuff, because it's passe. But if they had the rest of it?
Like I said in the other thread, 10 kaiju and the Gotengo fighting it out in Los Angeles in IMAX 3D and $100 million worth of VFX? We'll all be weeping with joy behind our 3D glasses.

Considering Legendary Pictures' track record, the special effects are the least of my worries. And I don't care what happens, if the script's total crap or not, I will work my rear off to promote this movie. I'm not just going to let this flop...
:hmmm::sly::inlove: (The closest to dertimination I could think of.)

My brother thinks I'm very weird for liking Godzilla.
Five minutes into Final Wars, and he was on the couch with me, watching it.

It is sad that today people like the trashy Matrix effects... Quite a shame.

That makes one of us. I want something with a little more substance to it than some visual effects assault. If I wanted to see a crappy Sci-Fi action movie that wants to give me a seizure, I will go watch one of Michael Bay's garbage movies.

How did you get that out of my statement? The martial arts/"Matrix" stuff in GFW comes off cheesier and dumber than the monster stuff. (Well, except the motorcycle fight which was actually kinda fun.)

I'll take this one step further and ask, "What if this film pulls a Millennium Series?" There wasn't one Millennium Film that I liked. While GFW may have been on a level of badness not seen since the 70s, it wasn't much worse than the five previous films.
I don't think we have to worry about this film being another GFW; when it comes to science fiction films, American filmmakers tend to be better than Japanese filmmakers (not to knock Toho sci-fi, but it's true...most Toho movies, even the good ones, are knock-offs of American movies), so I think this film will benefit from a better script and direction.

While I seriously doubt it'll happen, (GFW was the grand combination of studio desperation, bringing in a guy who had no right to be directing a kaiju film, a Devlin & Emmerich-level of respect for the source material, an obsession with American-style films and just plain idiocy) but if it does........
well....
THERE WILL BE BLOOD. e__e

So...what if this film pulls a series of largely unrelated different takes on Godzilla, several of which are beloved by fans? Your statement contains no information on what you do want to see.
The Millenium series produced nothing as relentlessly bad as Megalon or Spacegodzilla, and IMO it produced three of the best kaiju films since the golden age.

See, i disagree. While some films in the Millenium series were disappointing, it provided probably my second favorite Godzilla film of them all: GMK. And the two Kiryu films are certainly able to hold their own. G2K was a letdown, GFW a squandered opportunity, but the only one in the series I'd say i actually hate is GXM, for a variety of reasons.

The Millennium Series excelled in new monsters and the re-imagining of the old.
Megaguirus, Orga, and Monster X? They are great kaiju. Especially Megaguirus and Orga.
Kiryu is probably my favorite MechaGodzilla. What isn't cool about taking the original Godzilla and using its skeleton to make a giant robot? It's even cooler how it can go berserk, run amok, and develop sentient thoughts.
And what about GMK Godzilla? Why does Godzilla keep coming back to attack Japan? It's because he's fueled by angry spirits! All those people who died during the Pacific War are using him as a puppet to fulfill their lust for vengeance. Quite an interesting take on our beloved King of the Monsters. It also added a whole new dynamic to his motivations (which is huge as far as characters go). Something most films fail to focus on.

The Millennium Series excelled in new monsters and the re-imagining of the old. This is what I believe the new film will have to do to succeed on ALL levels. Hate to say it but Godzilla does have some "baggage", from certain Showa films to GINO :look:.
One thing you gotta admit is that the Millennium versions WERE Godzilla, any way you look at it! :kinggoji:

Well, I think GXM can reach that level of bad pretty damn often... XD

Not NEAR as angry as I'd be if they pulled another GINO.

Honestly? If they messed it up as bad as they did GINO, I wouldnt think it as bad as Final Wars.
Final Wars was by Toho. Theyre supposed to KNOW how to do Godzilla. Devlin and Emmerich make nothing but ****, of COURSE they ****ed it up.
Final Wars was every hackneyed anime cliche stuck in a blender and then written by focus groups. At least GINO tried to be different, even if it was awful.
If the thing HAS to be bad, at least it should be bad in an original way.

I wouldn't be that surprised, honestly. I want this to be a legitimately good film ala the original Gojira, but at the same time Godzilla is most known in pop culture for being a big campy monster; so Legendary might just pander to that. Hopefully that's not the case, but if they do go that (disappointing) route, I'd expect for it to be at least a fun time at the theaters. Like Final Wars!
And not like GINO, with its big stupid-*** Leno chin and mpreg.
