Maybe THIS (http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/world/hole-that-swallowed-a-threestorey-building-20100601-wvgg.html) explains it. It does look a lot like an excavation it's so confined and just going straight down. WAY deep too!

No death ray testing until someone figures out what really happened. :p
