Do we need NASA to confirm alien life? It's a big universe out there, there's something. That being said, it's hard to get excited over some bacteria. Now alien CIVILISATION, that's something to be very interested in... and try not to fear :D

There's an idea that the emergence of life is extremely unlikely, but given the size of the universe, it should still be surprisingly common. But there are different stages of life. So some planets will have life at bacterial level, fewer will have something like the eukaryotic cell (advanced cells with more complex organelles) and fewer still will have conscious life. Earth is special in that it's bridged all three gaps. But I'm certain there are others out there.
