Being a Kaiju Newbie I need to know what kaiju movies I NEED to see and when. Luckily I have a cult video store which specializes in horror and sci-fi movies. Here is what I know the store carries:

Rodan
Varan the Unbelievable
Daimaijin (The complete series)
King Kong Escapes
Orochi, the Eight-Headed Dragon
Frankenstein Conquers the World (I know it got some bad reviews, but is it worth it for Baragon?)
War of the Garantuas
Mothra
The Mothra Rebirth Series
Gamera the Invincible
Gamera vs Jiger
Gamera vs Virus
Gamera: Guardian of the Universe
Gamera 2: The Advent of Legion
Giant Monster Gammera
Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris

Godzilla:

Godzilla vs Mothra (I believe this to be Mothra vs Godzilla)
Godzilla vs the Smog Monster (I am interested in seeing the Smog Monster)
Godzilla's Revenge
Destroy All Monsters
Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla
Terror of MechaGodzilla
Godzilla vs Megalon
Godzilla vs Monster Zero
And the Heisei series

What movies haven't you seen on that list of videos? I can tell you how good each of them are and if they are worth watching. But you are lucky that you have a store like that around you. We don't have anything cool like that around Nebraska, well at least that I know of.

Ohh about checking out Frankenstein Conquers the world, you really should im sure it got bad reviews but I think it is a good movie. The Smog Monster is also another good movie that is worth checking out.

It's alright that you are a newbie, I was just curious what movies you needed to see. Well im would suggest that you watch the original Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla. That is my most favorite Godzilla, its got a good story line, awesome fight scenes, 4 kaiju, monkey people ;) . It's just a realyl great movie. Then i would really recommend War of the Guargantuas, thats a really kick *** flick. Then probably the Gamera Trilogy.

Hockeymask, I HIGHLY recommend that you see:

Gamera 3
Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah
Godzilla X Mechagodzilla
Godzilla vs. Biollante

I guarantee these action-packed films will imprison you as a kaiju-fan for the rest of your life! Muhahahaha! :darklord:

and yes, I'm aware that your store does not have Godzilla X Mechagodzilla or GMK, so FIND THEM on www.ebay.com

Depends. Something like Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla while new isn't very good, but Mothra vs. Godzilla (64) while old is very good.

Well personally its easier for me to get into the older Godzilla movies. The heisei series was ok, but I can't really seem to get into the new movies all that well. I know that there are some really good ones in there but they just dont grab me for some reason.

LOL! How could I forget. My bad.
But still, you can probably get a better price on ebay for the DVDs.

Indeed. But I'd recommend you see the Millenium films first, since they have some good special effects and a mix of "beam battles" and hand-to-hand fights.

The Gamera trilogy! The Daimajin trilogy! War of the Gargantuas! And Rodan!

Those are the non-Godzilla films that I mostly enjoyed out of your list.

Not really. I mean, they were Daiei's version of Godzilla for kids. The majority of the films are cheesey, cheap (who cares right?), and usually have pretty poor acting. But the monster battles are pretty good. I would suggest checking out the following Gamera films first before seeing any of the others:

Gamera
Gamera Vs. Barugon
Gamera Vs. Gyaos

Those are the best Showa Gamera films. The others are more cheesey and crazy.

A Showa Gamera movie that I would suggest is Gamera vs. Jiger (not Jigger, I almost got my *** kicked because it sounds too much like a very bad word. :p )

I know the showa Gamera series is kinda low dollar, compared to Godzilla movies. But one thing I never got about them is that they are directed toward kids, but the monsters usually die in pretty violent ways. Worse than any godzilla movie that I have ever seen (Example: the Space Gyaos from Gamera vs Guiron). They also get into some pretty deep scientific stuff, but i dig that kinda thing so it's all good. ;)

Hello-
I'm a new guy to this website, but not to kaiju--at 37 years old, i prefer the older stuff. I just wanted to say, many might disagree, BUT i think "FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD" is a great one. You should try to at least see this one, if not get it. How you can beat the concept of a giant Japanese Frankenstein Monster hurling cars that are way out of scale around, I don't know, personally! Another one is "WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS", which is the sequel of sorts to the first movie mentioned. Pretty hard to beat for more floppy rubber monster fun.

Hockeyface, go with either "War of the Gargantuas" or "Godzilla vs. Monster Zero". Two good all-around pictures with excellent special effects with American actors make it easier for a newbie to get into (you are North American right?).
Stay away from the ones mentioned until you've seen the best.

The "Daimajin" series is excellent as well but not easily found in English dubbed format (I prefer the subtitled DVD versions).

Hockeyface

oh
I don't care for the American cast (sure they can be in it but it doesn't really matter). I watched Gigan and Ghidrah already and they had no American stars.

What I meant by that is stay away from the ones everyone warned you about.

The main reason I recommend those two is they're great films, the American actors just add an American perspective to them, which I think would help make appealing to a newbie.

Not Again now there is Western Kaiju to throw into the mix! You gotta understand that I have found myself getting into the western kaiju as of late. Here is what I'm looking at right now:

It Came From Beneath the Sea
20 Million Mile From Earth
Attack of the Crab Monsters
The Giant Claw
The Deadly Mantis
The Black Scorpion
The Giant Behehmoth

Black Scorpion and 20 Million Miles to Earth. It Came From Beneath the Sea was decent but not as good as the two I already mentioned.

see what ever you want. different people have different tastes. me, godzilla vs. spacegodzilla is my favorite godzilla movie, but alot of people hate it. gmk did not please me that much, yet it is one of the most popular godzilla movies. so, look at all the different ones and see what you like.

DAM was quite good but a it overhayped with the climax fight. And Hedorah was just Godzilla on crack... which is good thing for me.

I concur.
I just got the WS subtitled DVD two weeks ago. Much better than expected, almost on par with Godzilla vs. The Thing.
