Dark Horse Press is releasing a follow up book (tentatively scheduled for October) to the original King Kong which is both a prequel and a sequel story. It's called "Kong: King of Skull Island" and all I can say so far is WOW!:

Oh, BTW MM, your absence on T:S will get you kicked off! Besides, I'm lonely on there.

Awesome... I hope I can get my hands on this book when it comes out this October.
From the looks of things... well from ONE picture *with a very Kong like creature tied to some tree with a fire below it*... looks like Kong may possibly get revived by some strange mystical means.
So far so good from the looks of it. Specially that pic of the Kong/Rex battle, two thumbs way up!

Alrighty... I contacted one of the people in charge of this little project, Joe DeVito, and asked about the availibility of this book, you know... wanting to know if this was going to be availible at select outlets and stuff like that or availible nationwide.
Here's his reply:
Yes, this is going to be nationwide - Borders, Barnes and Noble, and the like. But make no mistake, this is not a comic book. It is a 9x12 hardcover with about 40 illustrations and numerous sketches and drawings all woven throughout a 70,000 word novel. The confusion, no doubt, is that it is not coming from Dark Horse Comics, per se, but from their new imprint, DH Press, which is geared towards books as opposed to comics.
I, like you, am a life-long Kong fan. It took me 12 years to put this project together. I hope you enjoy it - please spread the word!
I am curious: How did you come by the site? If you have a second, please let me know.
Best Regards,
Joe DeVito
I don't know... should I tell him where I found out about the book, as in here?
Well should I give him answer?

^ And with images like that, only the foolish wouldn't dare buy a copy of that book! Great find, Cam Eleon! This should be a fine item for anyone's collection, kong fan or not!
Peace,

First Godzilla, then Gamera, then Ultraman Tiga, and now the granddaddy of them all Kong. Man, Dark Horse has been really good to us giant monster fans, huh?

Well, since I'm the guy who started this thread, I found out about it from it being listed in this month's Comic Shop Previews (they place orders three months ahead of time) under the Dark Horse section. I'd vaguely remembered hearing about the project a long while ago when he was still working on it. Once I put two and two together, I did some quick online research and viola, came across the link above, which I immediately posted to get the word out.
As for telling him, Ash- absolutely! Who knows, maybe Mr. DeVito will come here and find the place to his liking too. The more, the merrier!....

This is incredible...
This looks to be one of the finest tributes to the first and greatest* monster of them all. Masterful storytelling, gorgeous artwork, this tale seems to have all the book lover or a monster lover could hope for. I certainly plan on buying this book once I get the chance!:)
*Well... the other greatest. --->:kinggoji:

Finally got my copy a couple of days ago and it is truly amazing! The wonderful preview art was just a small taste of what's in this book! I'm halfway through so far and not only is the art incredible, but the story has just as much depth and power as the illustrations. We get an arch-enemy of sorts for Kong in the beast Gaw (the above mentioned dino on the book's cover), who holds some surprises itself and we get a small appearance by the King's royal parents (Papa Kong being a particularly tough customer, grizzled, gray and missing an eye). I really hope that Mr. DeVito gets the chance to make more sequels like he mentioned the Newsarama interview...

I to have finally read this book and it is phenominal. The story, the art work, the writing. It is one of the best monster books I have ever read. I would highly recommend this to anyone who can find it. The GAW dino is really cool. He is almost more demon that DINO. The back story is great finally an explination of Kong, The Wall and alot of other things.

Yeah, Gaw is one firce girl monster. Makes you wonder, Kublai says that each generation makes a new Gaw, might we see another femme fatal perhaps in a sequel/prequel?
In any case, I got it and it was worth the wait. It had many ood things but it wasn't quite as good as I hoped for. (The promo for it was so good that I had almost unfairly high standards. Eh.:eh: ) DeVito said that he hopes to expand on what he made, he spoke of things only hinted at in the book in prequels.
Such as when humans arrived on the Island, the battles against the Raptor Men, the creation of the civilization and the old city, etc. Seeings how Kong is dead, we see his stinking bones, there may be no hope for a sequel unless its told in the smae manner, Ishara/Storyteller tells Vincent of what happened.
What I'd really like to see is the kongs in full armor and weilding their weapons as its said they did in ancient times. (What kind of weapons could a Kong use? We know from the movie, he once used a tree as a club.)

I've noticed some nitpicky things.
Read carefully and you'll see that towards the end of the book, Vincent Denham wonders what if the Wall ever burned? He said that it would be like the burning of Atlanta. Its a reference to how the Wall from King Kong 1933 was used in "Gone with the Wind" for something to be burned in the burning of Atlanta scene.
Also, on the title page, there's a photo of a paperboy hawking newspapers. One reads that WWI hero, Airman Cooper kills Kong. A tip of the hat to how Merain C. Cooper, Kong's creator, has a cameo at the end of the film as the pilot who kills Kong.
Also, on the same page, there's a photo that shows Kong falling from the Empire State Building. He's falling facing away from the building as if he were shot off the way he was in the film. Yet its supposedly based on DW Lovelace's novelization so as to avoid red tape. In the novel, Kong jumps from the Empire State Building which would suggest Kong would fall facing towards the Building.
At the end, there's a section called "Carl Denham's notes." We see a drawing by Denham of the damaged gates of the Wall. Though damaged and partially off their hinges, they're still standing. That would make sense with how in the film, Kong smashed the gates open... but in the novel, he pounded the gate's flat. They fell straight forwards and crushed to death the people who'd been trying to hold it shut. Sure, the gates could have been repaired but all it would have taken John Michlig to let us know that would be one line. "As you can see, we've repaired the gates."
Oh well, the joys on trivia. :p
