How'd you like to wake up under your Blackhawk helicopter & find The Camel Spider coming toward ya!

A friend of ours woke up in Iraq one morning to see this sucker heading right at him. These spiders are indiginous to Iraq. They inject an anesthetic into the belly of the camels or anything else they cozy up to & then they burrow inside and lay their eggs.

Dont' make plans on going to Arizona any time soon, because they hopped a ride back on one of our transports. They run 10 miles per hour & can jump. They have been killing cats & other unfortunate critters. And you thought Arachnaphobia was scary!!!!:spidey:

It's real but it's size is often exaggerated, and it doesn't latch onto you and eat flesh. Just click on Sandworm's link.

Sorry for sounding a little sceptical there but I had to know the truth. Thanks you guys. Anyways it looks really cool and big. Have to get a major fly swatter for that sucker.

According to most spider experts, these claims are all false. Camel spiders (so named because, like camels, they can be found in sandy desert regions) grow to be moderately large (about a 5" leg span), but nowhere near as large as dinner plates; they can move very quickly in comparison to other arthropods (a top speed of maybe 10 MPH), but nothing close 25 MPH; they make no noise; and they capture prey without the use of either venom or anesthetic. Camel spiders rely on speed, stealth, and the (non-venomous) bite of powerful jaws to feed on small prey such as other arthropods (e.g., scorpions, crickets, pillbugs), lizards, and possibly mice or birds. They use only three pairs of legs in running; the frontmost pair (called pedipalpa) is held aloft and used in a similar manner to the antennae of insects. Camel spiders shun the sun and generally hide during the day, coming out at night to do their hunting.
Stop whining and read that. :hmmm:

I think some of you think that it is just one spider but good news there is just two together so it is smaller than some of you think.

August 24th, 2004, 11:50 PM
Indeed. Now if you want big spiders you need to talk about this bad boy:

http://sauron.homestead.com/files/goliath-plate.gif

The Goliath Bird Eating spider, who IS the size of a dinner plate, with the largest having a diameter of 11 inches and weighing almost half a pound.

Yikes those are things are freaky! No sleep tonight after seeing the picture and reading about them. Not only are they big but they're extremely fast and jump incredibly high and eat away at flesh.Sounds almost like a horror movie.I just hope they get eliminated before they end up getting around here.Plus they make loud hissing noises how sinister.I gotta ask though why must they always compare the sizes to dinner plates? I don't want to be thinking of anything that has "spider" and "dinner plate" in the same sentence.

I can only imagine a spider with a diameter of a foot!

But I gotta admit, that thing is pretty cool.

Yeah they are pretty cool, until you wake up one morning with one in your face, or you stomach :O . Im sorry if I was over there in Iraq I would show no mercy toward these little demons. I don't care how fast they are I bet they can't out run a well placed M-16A-2 round to the back  .

Also ignore the soldier's leg in the background and look at the hand holding them up and the visible cuff there.Which raises another excellent question about these claims made against the windscorpion (it just sounds cooler than "Camel Spider"). That being: If it really is as big and dangerous as these soldiers claim it to be, then why the HELL would one be holding TWO of them with his BARE HAND?:p

All things considered though, I still hate those things (arachnophobe that I am). I'd rather take the Goliath.

Maybe thats the only reason why would want to see one (to see how big it actually is), but it will have to be caged up in a fiberglass prison before i even look at it. The thought of it running at me is kinda creepy lol

Sure, the stuff the soldiers were saying about them aren;'t exactly based in reality, but that fact alone does not stop the little buggers from being creepy as Hell like they are. Like I said, I'd rather take my chances with the Uber-tarantula Phish posted.

Hmmm.... wouldn't the monitor lizards, the kind that kill and eat scorpions; destroy this beast before it became common? Don't also forget deadly poisonous desert snakes: I'll bet a sidewinder or a mohave rattler would nuke it.

Don't forget the spider wasp, either. They would stalk and kill these animals.
Rural desert dwellers are usually heavily armed: in the unlikely event that this spider went after somebodies kitty, kitty would dart indoors; desert dweller would shoot
this thing. It isn't bullet-resistant.

One more note: as a child in West Virginia; we often firebombed places where rattlers and copperheads hid out. A bottle of home made napalm-Iwon't publish the recipie here, safety concerns-got rid of a nest of these things-would just as effective.

My last observation: this beast(s)is an a hostile world, alien to his existance; he probably won't last a month.

Tongue Louse: "LOL HAY GUYS, 'SUP???"

http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/item.php?news=719

"The tongue louse enters through the fish's gills, using claws to attach itself to the base of the snapper's tongue and survives by drinking from an artery which supplies its blood.

"Eventually the tongue is reduced to a stub. However, the parasite is now large enough to replace the tongue and as it manipulates the fish's food, it also dines out for free on the freed food particles when the fish eats. "
