There's just something about those 2D fighting games that make them so great - everything from Street Fighter to Guilty Gear. So, I decided to make a topic on it. Discuss any and all 2D fighting games here.
Last Blade 1&2, King of Fighters 2002/2003, and Garou: Mark of the Wolves are all set to hit the PS2 sometime around early 2005 or late this year. Neo Geo Battle Coliseum is supposed to make its way to arcades shortly (they even threw in Cyber Woo!), while Capcom Fighting Evolution is coming in November to the PS2.
LONG LIVE 2D FIGHTING
Man...I'd swear I'm more in love with fighting games than kaiju. :p

i'm not really sure if this counts, but Sonic Battle is a great fighting game, with a ton of characters, a huge complicated story-line, and many many levels. its really great. it may not count as 2d though, because the battle feild is at an angles, so you can move side to side and up and down, plus jumping, but the game itself is in cartoon animation, so take it how you want.

WOOHOO! 2D FIGHTERS! *composes self* ahem...
I love 2d fighters, and have always been an avid fan of them since I first played Mortal Kombat way back then. Nothing can top them when it comes to getting down to it and thouroughly kicking someone's butt "old skool". Many a great classics have com from this genre (Street Fighter, King of Fighter's etc. etc.) and there have been some lame ducks in the genre, but still the classics keep on kicking. Plus, it would be weird to watch Ryu and Ken duke it out in the third dimension (but it probably wouldn't be unwelcome)
Let's hear it for 2d fighters!

You have to love 2D fighters. The ones I pick up and play are:Guilty Gear X, Darkstalkers, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

As soon as I get a PS2, one of the first games i'm getting is the Street Fighter Collection. All Street Fighter games and charecters in one. 2D fighting never looked so good. Oh, yeah!

I seem to rememer a fighting game that had Shaq in it for sega...but anyway...
Street fighter and Marvel vs Campcom were cool ones. Also mortal kombat. I think MK is my favorite.

Ah, Shaq-Fu.... the animation and fluid motion was amazing!.
however, you had to play shaq. and the sprites were itty bitty teeny weeny, microscopicly minute.
at first glance you'd think it was a platformer, but nope lame fighter worth the 5 bucks you might find it for.
Any body remember any of the good clone titles that onslaughted us back in the heyday of fighters?
I'd like to remember some of the horrific Mortal Kombat clones, SF clones, that had one sequal or less, then bleep off the radar.
more specifically fighters that were produced by companies other than the traditional Midway, Capcom, SNk...like Ballz... or ... that other one... or the really great monstrostoties that came out for jaguar or some junk.

I was a huge fan of Street Fighter until I laid my eyes on the Mortal Kombat franchise. I have never been the same since!

I've always been a huge Street Fighter fan. There are plenty of other fighters out there but for me Street Fighter will always be king. I'm interested in finding out more about King of Fighters since the only real taste I got of SNK was of Capcom vs. SNK 1 & 2. There are literally hundreds of 2-D fighting games like Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat, Samurai Shodown, Fatal Fury, Darkstalkers, even Double Dragon has gotten 2 fighting games of it's own with Rage of the Dragons which I haven't seen yet and Double Dragon 5 for SNES. Three words about that one: don't try it. Or rather don't actually pay money for it it's funny to play but really just a jumping on the trend of fighting games being popular in the 90's. I never knew Shaq-Fu was a fighting game, I always thought it was a side scrolling beat-em-up. I should check it out. A fighting game that stars Shaq-that by itself makes me curious. Oh and how could I forget Clay Fighter? And then you've got your Vs. games like Capcom vs. Xmen, Marvel etc. I think 2D's will always be around, they've been the heart and soul of the fighting game world and sometimes they just play better than some of the 3D ones.

Playing Shaq-Fu is like being a communist. It seems improbable one could actually enjoy it, but everyone declares war on you if they find out you aren't joking.
Anyways, I've always wanted to play Darkstalkers 3, but I can never find a copy of it anywhere. I've been wanting to play as Jedah in a video game ever since I learned of his existence. Luckily Capcom Fighting Evolution should fill in the void, since Jedah will be playable in it.

I remember a generic Kaiju game for sega, but I can't think of the name of it. It didn't have Godzilla in it or anything, but it had things in it that resembled him. That was an OK game, but nothing special.

Capcom Vs SNK 2 EO for GameCube, no one can hope to defeat drunken hippie Ax3(Orochi Iori)!!! Or his brothers, the Hulk (Blanka) and a Ninja Turtle (Some fat wrestler guy)!!! Good lord, I love Colour edit mode.

King of the Monsters? Or possibly Rampage? I was a big king of the Monsters fan. King of the monsters 2 was one of my favorite games. Though by far my favorite 2-D fighting game is and will always be Mortal Kombat 3. It just had an orgy of blood and violence never before seen up until that point. It was a beautiful game that was highly polished. All the MK games were fantastic but MK3 was my favorite. SF2 also gets props as that was the game to play at the skating rink whenever my elementary school had a fieldtrip to there. I remember when I used to tear **** up with Vega. Wow I feel old. That was like11 years ago...

I swear, if I had it on Xbox, i'd be kicking peoples 2D butt across the world, but I don't so I stick to the locals.
Yeah, colour edit mode rocks, my Shadow Blight (read: completly black Shin Akuma) kicks butt, ecspecially in dark places. And I have a Goji-Son (read: Terry Bogard) decked out in black clothing. Ahh...good times.

Yeah, King looks pretty cool in all black clothing too, especially when she does that taunt with the handkerchief. The only character who looks really cool in colour is Iori in a tie-dye shirt... actually replace cool with funny, it's a sight to behold.

In an effort to keep this thread alive, i'm going to pose a question to everyone who likes 2D Fighters...
What is your favorite (or most hated) fighting style? every charecter has their own so there is plenty to choose from.
My favorite would have to be Terry Bogard's. My most hated is Muay Thai (example: Sagat, King, Joe Higashi).
How about everyone else?
Bruticus
October 16th, 2004, 10:55 AM
I guess my favorite fighting style would have to be K's from King of Fighters, followed closely by the Dark Shotokan used by Evil Ryu or Akuma. My least favorite is probably wrestling, which means I dislike guys like Zangief and Raiden (Fatal Fury - NOT Mortal Kombat).

My favorite would have to be the beserkers, rush 'em and destroy them with the devestating c-stick. Works well with King and Iori. My least favorite is the guys you fight before that who run into your attacks, idots...

Isn't Ryu and all the Shoto-clones fighting style some form of Ankanatsu (the spelling on that is definitly incorrect)? It's a non lethal fighting style (for the most part). I remember reading that somewhere, that the fighting style that they are trained is Ankanastu. Ryu and Ken were trained by Gouki, Akuma unleashes the lethal style of Ankanatsu, kills his brother Gouki, and then Ryu and Ken seek revenge against him.
So there are two styles of it, lethal and non lethal...

My most hated fighting style isn't that of a charecter on the game, but the player themself. I can't stand it when you are playing a fighting game, like Soul Caliber for example, and the other person beats you by repeatedly doing the same move, and there is nothing you can do about it. I certainly don't know anyone like this though...Cough! Gorjirus!....but I'm just saying...
Shadow
October 18th, 2004, 08:03 AM
Gorjirus wasn't that tough, it was Rapheal. Don't credit the player, credit the cheap charecter.
Back on 2D Fighters...
SvsC Chaos is coning out, and so is another fighter also (I think the other is strictly SNK though). So, hooray for that!

What system is it soming out for? If it's for Gamecube, I think I might get it!!
Anyways, the fighting style I like best I think would have to be those that attack with energy or something from afar. An example would be Ryu. He can attack close, but hi Ryu-kin (or something like that) can be used for far combat.

I remember that one of them is PS2 and Xbox exclusive and the other is strictly Xbox. So, to reiterate, Xbox owners are lucking out with these games...and they may be online playable too.

melee fighting is definately my favorite. when i get ahold of a good character with a good number of all around attacks, i'm near invincable in a melee mode.

I don't like the boxing style of fighting. There was a boxing game for NES that I didn't like, plus the boxer in Street Fighter.
Shadow
October 26th, 2004, 10:20 AM
The boxer in Street Fighter was originally named Mike Bison, but when it was brought to the states they had to change it (Mike Bison sounds like Mike Tyson). So the name was shortened to M. Bison and given to the man with the psycho crusher (his Japanese version name was Vega). The boxer took the Brazilian with the mask and claw's name of Balrog, and the mask and claw Brazilian got the name Vega.

Are you saying the boxer is Vega? Because the boxer and vega were in the same game.

Just to straighten this out:
US Name = Japanese Name
M. Bison = Vega
Balrog = M. Bison
Vega = Balrog
Akuma = Gouki
The Akuma thing doesn't have any relevance to what's being discussed, but I thought I'd throw that in for good measure.

Sorry, I tried to explain, but I guess some people just couldn't understand it the way I did so. Thanks for clearing it up, Parker.
To add on to Akuma:
In the American version, Gouki was the name of Akuma's brother. (Gouki trained Ryu and Ken, then Akuma killed his own brother [Gouki]).

Not quite. Akuma's brother was Gouken, not Gouki.

Crap...
I always thought it was Gouki...
Jeez, what a difference two letters make...
Now, I pose another question... What is your standing on shotoclones? Like 'em or not?

Would the Ninja Turtles games for NES count as a fighting game? It's not like Street Fighter or anything, but you do fight people. Anyway, that was a cool game.
