I once heard somewhere, can't remember where, but soon after Gappa and Guilala was released, the company who made the movies wanted to do a Gappa vs. Guilala movie. Is this true?

Yes I have the G-fan that covered it. It's a pity it wasn't made as it would have been nice to see them fight eachother.

Would that not have been like the shortest fight ever? How could they have made a movie out of that?

Either Guilala isn't as strong as everyone thinks, or Gappa is massively underated.

Well the way I see it Guilala is overrated and Gappa is quite underrated, but he's still weaker

There could've been increases in strength ya know for the film ;)

No. GAPPA and THE X FROM OUTER SPACE were both released in 1967 and the rumored "VS" wasn't mentioned until decades later.

In the mid-1990s, Nikkatsu was impressed by the success of the Heisei Godzilla, Gamera, and Ultraman movies (plus the then-upcoming US GODZILLA and the remake of YONGGARY) and said they were considering making a new Gappa film. Then word spread that the movie would have Gappa fight Shochiku's monster Guilala, but Nikkatsu said that was just a fan rumor and they had never even discussed that idea with Shochiku. Eventually, Nikkatsu just dropped the idea to make a new Gappa movie.

Or the company wouldn't need to base the kaiju exactly like they were in 1967. :dontgetit Heisei Yongary isn't like Showa yongary... for example...

Anyways, this film was rumored to be in planning stages in 1997 in G-fan.
Since then, I haven't heard any news on it at all. Apparently, they must have cancelled it (possibly after seeing the box office failure of Godzilla (1998)

No. Nikkastsu dropped the idea completely. Sorry if I worded that in a confusing way.

Henry, the report in G-Fan was based on fan rumors in Japan. GAPPA VS GUILALA was never planned by the studios and it was never going to happen.

No. Like Keith said, they were planning to make one in order to cash in on the sucess of the Heisei Godzilla and Heisei Gamera series, but they scrapped those plans.

K, cause I was wondering why I never heard of it... Imagine what a Heisei Gappa would look like, I wonder if it would rival Gammy's return...

NO WAY WHATSOEVER! Gamera: GOTU is one of the best kaiju movies I've ever seen.

I'd prefer to see a Heisei Guilala over Heisei Gappa because... well, he's got more of a unique design and it would look interesting alongside all the other Heisei beasties. :D

Don't forget, Gappa would have been one of the only Heisei monsters to have arms, legs, and wings, I think he would have looked kick ***!

Yeah, and especially if they fiercened his look, Gappa could've looked like a real beast, probably better than Garuda is now

They would probably make him more like a gargoyle, sence he seems A LOT like one, personally, they should have had him/her come from Paris if redone...

Hmmm...I'm inspired for my next Kaiju Portrait with Black Background edition. Ultimately though, I think we all hear have to appreciate Kpa for finally revealing the truth behind this whole fiasco. Its great to hear that a mid-90s Gappa was considered, without all the Guilala confrontation rumors / misinformation getting in the way. Even I was having a hard time trying to get the facts strait. Again, we thank you Kpa

What? All I said that Gappa's return for Heisei could not rival Gamera's. Besides, Godzilla Raids again wasn't that great.

You're very welcome.... I'm glad I could be of service.

BTW, did you get JAPANESE GIANTS #10? There's a ton of info in there that would interest you... including a small production sketch from NESSIE that I've never seen before.

I was just pointing out Godzilla Raids Again deseres an honorable mention, and was definately a classic.

What didn't you like, for starters? For a film in '55, and the first Godzilla film with an opposing monster, I'd say the fighting was pretty damn good. And the acting wasn't that bad, where the film is unwatchable.

Yes, I'll say I've seen both versions, and both are terribly boring. GOTU is much better.
