Alright, let's take care of a little something before we go on.
Take anything and everything you know about Blink 182. *songs about sex with dogs, family members and such, all out the window. *Songs about dating, parties, other teen issues, out the window. *Every song sounding the same? *yep, that's right... throw it out the window.
I heard this new cd in my friends car, and have to say I was thoroughly impressed. * The songs, first off, don't sound anything like eachother. *Each song is almost a different style of music in itself. *There's some hard, fast songs, slow songs, there's even an appearence by The Cure's Robert Smith.
The songs are no longer about stupid things as listed above, and touch on some serious subjects, such as death, paranoia, and not so serious subjects; sex, being trapped in a space shuttle (yes, it's true). *
Is this really that good? well, I havn't bought a cd since i've been in 10th grade.. that's about 3 years ago. After hearing 5 of the songs on this cd, I bought it the following day. *Don't want to take my word for it? Then *Click Here and listen for yourself (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000DZDTG/qid=1070907010/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/104-3498526-9656754). *I recommend Violence or Stockholm Syndrome to see just how much they've changed, and for gods sake it is DEFINETLY for the better.

Are you saying Adam's Song was a bad song?
Dan
December 8th, 2003, 09:47 PM
No, good point actually. If you like what they did with Adams Song or Stay Together For The Kids, then you'll most definetly enjoy this. Also, thanks for moving this.. i didn't realize it was only Kaiju dvd/cd section.

But, yeah. I've heard one of their songs on the radio. I guess polished up punkish-popish stuff can be pretty good.

hey, another great one: Men At Work. somehow, their song Land Down Under got really famous without getting the band itself any publicity, but has great other songs that never really made it as big as the first, though they're a lot better. the song Overkill and Who Can It Be Now? are my favs from them, and the rest are good, too.

Alright I got something for everyone to ponder about because maybe there should be something new added to the thread. What is everyone's favorite songs to their favorite bands? You know, the ones that whenever they come on you just stop everything you are doing and just listen, maybe even sing along or just makes you go crazy as you start to bang your head?
Led Zepplin: Stairway to Heaven, Ten Years Gone, Kashmir, Black Dog, Dazed and Confused, Since I Have Been Loving You, Battle of Evermore, Rock and Roll, What Is And What Should Never Be
Jimi Hendrix: Highway Chile, Voodoo Chile, Fire, Hey Joe, Foxey Lady, Red House
Eric Clapton: (With Cream) Sunshine For Your Love, I Feel Free, White Room, (With Derek and the Dominos) Layla, Bell Bottom Blues (Solo) Let it Grow, Let it Rain, Wonderful Tonight
Arlo Guthrie: Alice's Resturant, I'm Going Home, Chilling of the Evening, Highway in the Wind
Henry Nillson: Think About Your Troubles, Down To The Valley, Me And My Arrow
Franz Ferdinand: Take Me Out
Jet: Are You Gonna Be My Girl, Radio Song
The Darkness: I Believe In A Thing Called Love
Johnny Cash: Boy Named Sue, Hurt, Ring of Fire
That's all I have for right now, what about you guys?

Nice little challenge, GS...
The Mars Volta: In all honesty, almost every song by them, especially when played live, but my particular favorites are, Inertiatic ESP, This Apparatus Must Be Unearthed, Drunkship of Lanterns, Cut That City, and Eunuch Provocateur.
At the Drive-In: Starslight, Arcarsenal, Sleepwalk Capsules, One Armed Scissor, Quarentined, and Cosmonaut.
Coheed and Cambria: Delirium Trigger, Neverender, Devil in Jersey City, A Favor House Atlantic, The Velourium Camper III: Al the Killer, The Crowing, 2113 (a nifty reference to Rush, at least in the song name)
Rush: This one's gonna be long...Working Man, 2112 Overture/Temples of Syrinx, Distant Early Warning, YYZ, Limelight, Vital Signs, and Subdivisions
Megadeth: Umm...every song on Rust in Peace!!
Metallica: For Whom the Bell Tolls, Master of Puppets (the entire album,) Anesthesia- Pulling Teeth, Fade to Black
Songs I like by bands that aren't necessarily my favorites or rarely listen to:
Rage Against the Machine: Bombtrack, People of the Sun
Project 86: Last Meal
Thursday: Paris in Flames
Tool: Lateralus, Schism, Cold and Ugly
Anti-Flag: 911 For Peace, Angry Young and Poor, Power to the Peaceful, Stars and Stripes

Revis: Spin, Living Rooms, Seven
I'll stop there.

To me, music is one of mankind's greatest creations: More than a mere form of passive entertainment, it can be used to invoke laughter, tears, deep thought, self-reflection, sexual desire, or even social change. Music is a very big part of my life (I even played the piano from 1998-2003), & I cannot imagine where I or anyone else would be without it. Can you believe that music was actually banned under the despotic regime of The Taliban??!! Yet another reason to hate them!!
So as the title asks, what are your All-Time Favorite Songs? They can be of any artist, genre, or time period. Here are mine, in no particular order:
1.) "Last Kiss," by J. Frank Wilson & The Cavaliers.
2.) "We're Not Gonna Take It," by Twisted Sister.
3.) "And When I Die," by Blood, Sweat, & Tears.
4.) "Bridge Over Troubled Water," by Simon & Garfunkel.
5.) "Gimme Shelter," by The Rolling Stones.
6.) "Bohemian Rhapsody," by Queen.
7.) "Voodoo Child," by Jimi Hendrix.
8.) "Follow Me," by Uncle Kracker.
9.) "Lean On Me," by Bill Withers.
10.) "Dream On," by Aerosmith.
11.) "When A Man Loves A Woman," by Percy Sledge.
12.) "Can't Help Falling In Love," by Elvis Presley.
13.) Metallica's cover of "Turn The Page" (originally by Bob Seger).
14.) "Drift Away," by Dobie Gray.
15.) "In The Summertime," by Mungo Jerry.
16.) "Breathless," by The Corrs.
17-8.) "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" & "House of The Rising Sun," by The Animals.
19.) "Everlasting Love" (there are various versions, & I can't find the artist who did the version I love so much).
20.) "December 1963 (Oh, What A Night)," by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons (My Number-One Favorite Song of All Time).
Quite a list, eh? I can't wait to see yours! :)

Now there's a list most definately agree with. Ronnie James Dio ROCKS!
Indeed he does. I've seen him in concert twice, and had the good fortune to meet him the 2nd time. He signed my Holy Diver album cover. In addition to being an excellent singer, he's a genuinely nice guy. Nothing condescending in his manner, he acted glad to see us. Someone said "You're the best," and he responded, "No, you guys are."
Anyway, like several others have already said, narrowing down your favorite songs is a tough thing to do. I have over 1,000 albums (mostly vinyl LPs, a fair amount of CDs, and a few cassettes), so you can imagine I've got a LOT of favorites. Here's a real short list, in no particular order.
DIO: The Last in Line, Holy Diver, Rainbow in the Dark
BEATLES: Helter Skelter, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, She Said She Said, Tomorrow Never Knows, Taxman, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Revolution, Hey Jude
BYRDS: Eight Miles High, Tiffany Queen, Mr. Tamborine Man (originally by Bob Dylan), Dolphin's Smile, Turn, Turn, Turn (orig by Pete Seger)
STEPPENWOLF: Monster, Born to be Wild, Gang War Blues, Magic Carpet Ride
STYX: Man of Miracles, Miss America, Lorelei, Snowblind
BLUE OYSTER CULT: Godzilla, Cities on Flame with Rock & Roll, The Great Sun Jester, Mirrors, Don't Fear the Reaper
MOODY BLUES: Question, Gypsy, 22,000 Days, Veteran Cosmic Rocker, Strange Times
BLACK SABBATH: Heaven & Hell, Sweet Leaf, Paranoid, Mob Rules, Lady Evil
DOORS: The Soft Parade, Waiting for the Sun, L.A. Woman, Hello I Love You
URIAH HEEP: Tears in My Eyes, Lady in Black, Sweet Lorraine, Easy Livin', The Magician's Birthday
JETHRO TULL: A Passion Play, Broadsword, To Cry You a Song, Aqualung, Beside Myself
PINK FLOYD: Brain Damage, Time, Wish You Were Here, Young Lust
AC/DC: Highway to Hell, Night Prowler, A Touch Too Much, Whole Lotta Rosie, You Shook Me All Night Long
RUSH: Tom Sawyer, 2112, War Paint, Dog Years, Witch Hunt, Between Sun & Moon
PUDDLE OF MUDD: Heel Over Head, Drift & Die
EVE 6: Inside Out
JUDAS PRIEST: The Ripper, Out in the Cold, Victim of Changes, Metal Godz
EAGLES: Victim of Love, On the Border, Get Over It, Good Day in Hell, Hotel California
METALLICA: Low Man's Lyric, The Memory Remains, Making My Way to Something Better
VAN HALEN: Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, Where Have All the Good Times Gone? (orig Kinks), You Really Got Me (ditto), Summer Nights
ENYA: Orinoco Flow
GUSTAV HOLST: The Planets
TCHAIKOVSKY: First Symphony
As I said, a short list. It's just off the top of my head; if I sat down a week from now to do the same thing, I'm sure there would be quite a difference in the list.

It's all fine and dandy to tell us what your favorite songs are, but why don't you take it a step further and tell us why you like these songs. Quote some of the lyrics and explain why you relate with them. What makes them special to you, what meaning do they hold for you. That would make for a far more interesting thread than just a list of song titles that tells us, essentially, nothing except for your taste in music. I promise if you do that, I'll reciprocate with a favorite song of my own and do the same, 'k?

We had a humongous "music" thread that can now be split off into the new topics that have been created. It was not as bad as the "Your Movie Collection!" one in the Movie chat but it was BIG and jumbled.
You mean to say that a band you had previously enjoyed now sucks? That's a heck of a way to keep themselves solvent...

Why is this ancient topic resurrected and why are you making this list thread more difficult? Gosh!
I wasn't the Thread Necromancer. godzillaguy36 started a song thread and Raptor, being the conscientious admin she is, combined it with an older one.
And list threads are cataclysmically boring. Your favorite song is "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow" by that spiffy new Brit-band "The I-Forgot-Our-Name-Cuz-We-All-Sound-The-Same"? Hooray!! It's freakin' Mardi Gras! Let's throw a parade! Phhhhhbt. Might as well start a "+1" thread for all that's worth.
*looks at his old list and is ashamed he mentioned Jet and the Darkness, man they suck*

I love so many songs I do not have all the time to write them down lol! So I will write down what I currently love...
Hearts On Fire- John Cafferty: This is from the Rocky IV soundtrack and I just love it! Pretty much a song about determination and wanting to push yourself to reach your goals. I workout to this song practically all the time.
Anything By Disturbed: I just love David's voice and the meanings within their songs. The beats and all are just awesome as well! One of the best metal bands I have come across ever!
Lose Yourself- Eminem: A nice dance-type rap that pretty much tells ya to do what you enjoy doing and to "lose yourself" in it. Get involved in your passions.
Remember The Name- Fort Minor: A great song that makes you wonder how you're gonna make your mark in the world so after your gone people will remember you.

"Good Girls Go to Heaven (Bad Girls Go Everywhere)" by Pandora's Box- Songwriter Jim Steinman took everything I enjoy about the 80s "chick rock" genre and added his own pseudo-symphonic touch to it, and I love it. Singer Holly Sherwood has one of the most powerful and kick-*** voices I know. Meat Loaf did a remake of this song on his "Bat Out of Hell II" album, and although his version is louder and heavier, it lacks the original's spirit, and Meat's voice doesn't have the fire that Holly brought to the song.
"It's All Coming Back to Me Now" by Pandora's Box- MUCH better than Celine Dion's lousy watered-down remake.
"Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young" by Fire Inc. (from the "Streets of Fire" movie soundtrack)- Probably one of the most epic songs Steinman ever wrote. Once again, Holly Sherwood sings like she can breath thermonucler fire:D
"Objects In The Rearview Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are" by Meat Loaf- One of the most depressing songs I've ever heard in my life, and in ways that really hit close to home.
"Mean Green Mother From Outer Space" from "Little Shop of Horrors"- Practically an anthem for vengeful movie monsters everywhere. Too bad the slapped-together "happy" ending of the movie ruins the song's impact.
"Godzilla" by Blue Oyster Cult- C'mon, do I really have to explain this?

Great list, Kent! I believe good music is inspirational. The military has used it through the ages, even with the bugle on the battlefield. Think of the horse-mounted cavalry on the Great Plains and a military band's tunes. Barry Sadler's ballad, GREEN BERET comes to mind also.
I also have too many favorites to list, many that have been around for quite some time. That also says something about just how much substance they do have to still be able to affect people's various emotions. Look at Christmas carols! ;)

Crazy Nights by 3 Inches of Blood - A cool intro riff and some decent vocals make this one a killer in my book.
A Tale from the Deep Woods by Bal-Sagoth - Some powerful black metal orchestration, and also Byron Roberts' deep vocals are always good.
The War of Wrath by Battlelore - Just reading the title implies something epic, and this song delivers on that account.
Black Fire by DragonForce - Fast. As. Hell.
They War the Fallen Lords by Epiclore - Epiclore is basically the antithesis to DragonForce. The tune to this song has just stayed with me for a long time.
The Crown and the Ring (Lament of the Kings) by Manowar - A slower song with a huge all-male choir doing the chorus.
I Am the Dog by Nevermore - The intro riff is good, but the icing on the cake here is the emotion in the voice of Warrel Dane, the singer. The album from which this song comes revolves around a real-life event wherein his girlfriend got caught up in a religious drug cult and disappeared.
Moondance by Nightwish - This song makes me want to do the Riverdance. You really have to listen to it to appreciate it.
Mouth for War by Pantera - It's the kind of song that inspires inner strength.
Erian's Mystical Rhymes by Rhapsody - A 10-minute metal epic utilizing a live orchestra and a decent-sized choir. The live version has a part midway through it that I really like. It's hard for me to describe, however.
Uthark Runa by Therion - A Middle Eastern-style riff opens up this song before it goes right into what I love best: a really big choir.

You know, I just happened to make a list in Biology the other day...
Well, here it is, a window into my soul. I was in a not-so-nice mood when I made this list though, so it shouldn't surprise you that its mostly heavier metal rather than the softer rock I've been listening too lately. Eh, I'll just put the most important ones on top:
"One" by Metallica. The very first metal song I ever listened to, it is still one of my favorites to this day.
"Only the Strong" by Flaw. The first band that really made me feel for their songs, and the favorite song of theirs.
"When Darkness Falls" by Killswitch Engage. An intense headbanger interlaced with some of the most powerful vocals in metal alternating between empowering singing and gut-wrenching screaming. Purely awesome.
"Cemetary Gates" by Pantera. The southern metal band defined every meaning of the word "angry" without making themselves look like the little posers that most rock singers are today. Yeah yeah yeah, I know this isn't an example of their "angry" songs, but I don't care, because this song rules.
"Civil War" by Guns & Roses. May look a bit out of place here, but I love this band and this is the first song I heard from them.
Honorable Mentions:
"Hallowed by thy Name" by Iron Maiden
"Highway to Hell" by AC/DC
"Act of God" by Fear Factory
"Shoots and Ladders" by Korn
"War Pigs" by Black Sabbath
"Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin
"Judith" by A Perfect Circle
"Re-Align" by Godsmack
"Down in a Hole" by Alice in Chains
"Aerials" by System of a Down
"Symphony of Destruction" by Megadeth
"Iron Tusk" by Mastodon
"Killing in the Name" by Rage Against the Machine
"Superbeast" by Rob Zombie
"Premonition of Pain" by 3 Inches of Blood
"I Will be Heard" by Hatebreed
I'll probably post more later, but thats all I managed to put on the list before my teacher yelled at me for not paying attention in class. ;)

Sultans of Swing contains enough guitar solos to let a true guitar fanatic die happily, as well stunningly good and memorable lyrics, and the always popular "underdog" theme (the song is about two guys in a garage band on the weekends.) but Lions has such a hauntingly good tune, and lyrics that are truly among the greatest every written. the song sends chills down my spine every time i hear it, and the lyrics will always stay with me, they're just that gripping and memorable.but my list of absolute favorite songs stretches out farther than just Dire Straits.River of Dreams by Billy Joel: just plain a great song, musically and lyrically.Open Your Heart by Crush 40: from Sonic Adventure 1, this song has an awesome intro, great lyrics, and a perfected "get into action" sound to it.Waking Up by Julien-k: from Shadow the Hedgehog, this is definatley one of my new favorite songs. the opening is just plain awesome, and the chorus is purely great.Overkill by Men At Work: what more can you want out of a depressing song?the Stranger by Billy Joel: i've loved this song since i was a kid, and always will. cant really explain it, its just a cool song. The Boys Are Back In Town by Thin Lizzy: oh, who doesn't love this song?i know there's others, but right now these are the cream of the crop.Rodan2000
