View Full Version : Best Showa Gamera Foe
December 8th, 2003, 10:06 PM
I'm just curious as to whose the most favorite among the Roost. Also to know which movie to grab should I ever get the chance to rent and/or buy any of these movies.
Like which one had the best, most impressive fight with Gamera?

Gaos for me
December 13th, 2003, 10:55 AM
Can't decide. They're all pretty cool monsters.
December 13th, 2003, 03:36 PM
I liked Barugon the most out of all of them, he was the only normal one out of the bunch. He just wanted to be left alone unlike the rest who either wanted to eat everyone or world domination (Zigra).

I like all kaiju. Each Showa Gamera foe is cool in its own right.

<font color='#008080'>Guiron is really cool, love the scene where he slices up Gyaos.
December 13th, 2003, 10:43 PM
Haven't seen a lot of the showa gamera series so I am going to have to say Gaos.
December 13th, 2003, 11:55 PM
My personal fave is Barugon. He is the most realistic looking, a well-realized quadruped. He is also a tragic character, removed from his natural habitat through no fault of his own. I don't see Gamera as the hero of the movie. My sympathies lie with Barugon when he is gruesomely burned by his own ray and then dragged underwater to his doom. Like King Kong, he is a victim of man's greed.

Same here, Barugon is awesome and really just wanted to be left alone.
The Great MM

Barugon is my fav Showa Gamera films like the others say, Gamera seemed more like the villan, he had no rite to attack Baru, Baru wasn't attacking any kids.
December 16th, 2003, 01:14 AM
For many of the same reasons I have to rate Barugon as my favorite Showa Gamera foe.
One thing has always puzzled me about GamVsBaru, why did the humans seem to like Gamera so much? He seemed to be the larger threat, smashing a dam and drowning several hundred people and all.
December 22nd, 2003, 12:12 AM
The one and only....Barugon!
December 28th, 2003, 07:58 AM
Without a doubt, Barugon. Can't really add much to what's been said. He just wanted to be left alone, and for the time, he looked realistic enough for me. And he is very powerful as well, I mean, his Rainbow beam is easily one of the most powerful Kaiju attacks ever. And as Zillamon said, Baru was a tragic character: in the movie I found myself rooting for him instead of Gamera. In any case, Baru is definitely one of the most unique monsters ever created, and that's why I really like him.
December 30th, 2003, 12:02 PM
<font color='#0000FF'>So far by defualt I must say Viras. Although, I need to see more of barugon. His sf in DAP was cool.
March 1st, 2004, 08:53 PM
Weren't you guys paying attention, Gamera was just roaring at Barugon, then Barugon jumped at Gamera, Barugon started all of that.
March 1st, 2004, 09:10 PM
<font color='#000F22'>My two favorite Showa monsters are Barugon and Zigra. Barugon was really one Gamera's toughest and most indestructible foes and that freaking rainbow he unleashed was probably one of the most incredible weapons ever dreamed up for a kaiju. I would have really loved to see him reincarnated in the new Gamera films. I like Zigra mainly because of his design, he's so sleek and cool looking. He just happened to be in a terrible movie, similar to Gigan, who was a cool monster but whose reputation was ruined by appearing in less than steller G-films.
Of all the potential monsters who might appear opposite Gamera in the new film announced, Barugon and Zigra are definatly my top picks.
March 9th, 2004, 07:54 PM
<font color='#0000FF'>Barugon and Zigra... for diametrically opposed reasons.
Barugon because he wasn;t such a bad sort...
Zigra because he was. http://www.kaijuphile.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
March 9th, 2004, 08:40 PM
<font color='#0000FF'>My username says it all http://www.kaijuphile.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/zigrasmilie.gif *Not only do I really like sharks, but I also find the concept of a SENTIENT kaiju who's out to rule the Earth very cool.
He's also one of the deadliest kaiju ever made. A single hit from his paralysis ray took Gamera completely out of commision!
March 13th, 2004, 10:07 AM
Barugon and Zigra are my faves.
March 14th, 2004, 06:52 AM
<font color='#FF0000'>Although I have only seen Barugon and Gyaos in action, I have to say Barugon and Zigra. Barugon for reasons already stated and Zigra because he looks cool.
March 16th, 2004, 07:17 PM
<font color='#F52887'>I really like that knife headed monster. It was fun to watch that thing. Hehe! Gurion right? I am skocked that there is no smilie of him....
March 18th, 2004, 08:33 PM
I agree with Zigra's namesake. http://www.kaijuphile.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Also, I find Viras a really eerie creature to behold! And the Gyaos can't be overlooked any more than you could the Baltans in respect to Ultraman.
The Showa Gamera films just seem to abound with unique and interesting creatures!
March 30th, 2004, 10:50 PM
Barugon all the way-his weapons were quite unique as well.
A rainbow heat ray from the fins on his back, and a cold weapon from his mouth. That was quite original. And to think it all happened because his egg was mistaken for a jewel and set under an infrared lamp. That's the last time I ever do THAT... http://www.kaijuphile.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I have to agree. *He had the best design and actually moved normally. *All the others(including Gamera) moved a bit clumsily at times. * * * http://www.kaijuphile.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/gamerasmilie.gif

<font color='#000080'>I have to say, my favorite Showa Gamera foe was Barugon. One reason is that, like the others stated, he just wanted to be left alone. He attacked Gamera because he probably saw Gamera as a threat. I forget, I haven't seen the film in a month or so, but didn't Gamera and Barugon first encounter when Barugon was flying into the Rainbow Ray, sapping its energy? If so, if I were Barugon, I wouldn't think of Gamera too kindly.
Barugon just has a damn impressive array of weapons. The Rainbow Ray, Ice Mist, etc.
My second favorite is Guiron. His knife blade is 100 times harder than diamond, as has been stated on Kaiju Statistics (website). His shurikens are a great long range weapon, especially since they return to Guiron if they haven't become embedded into something. Guiron was definitely unique in his own right.

Omg, I finally saw Gamera vs. Jiger, and I have to say I was impressed majorly by Jiger.
She is definately underated. Both kaiju she lost against in the DD's she should have won against. Moguera? I can't see Moguera winning against Jiger. She is just too deadly, her saliva salvo is deadly, Moguera would find multiple projectiles clogging up his joints.
Then the robopenguin would find himself being shredded a part by a ray that attacks a kaiju at the cellular level!
Any of his attacks would probably have little effect on Jiger, nothing Gamera did even flinched her until he used her totem, which she has a weakness to!
Biollante would definately have been pwned by Jiger. Everyones argument about Biollante losing so easily to Godzilla was because 'Zilla's ray was attacking her cells.
Jigers ray automatically does that! I can't see where people were getting that her ray would NOT effect biollante in that fight. It would have shredded her faster than any other beam could have!
May 29th, 2004, 12:53 PM
Oops accidentally pressed post.
Anyways, I'd definately say Jiger is rivalling Barugon as my favorite kaiju, she deserves more credit than she gets. Most people just ignore her abilities because she had a poor movie, much like most of the Showa Gamera foes, including Barugon.
May 29th, 2004, 04:38 PM
My favorites are http://www.kaijuphile.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/jigersmilie.gif and Barugon.
May 30th, 2004, 11:43 AM
<font color='#000080'>Yeah, Jiger's pretty deadly. Can't forget her stinger in her tail that impregnated Gamera!
Also, I don't know if anyone noticed, but in my above post I said "I forget, I haven't seen the film in a month or so, but didn't Gamera and Barugon first encounter when Barugon was flying into the Rainbow Ray, sapping its energy?"
I meant to say "when Gamera was flying into the Rainbow Ray, sapping its energy?"
May 30th, 2004, 01:24 PM
Yeah! I forgot about those eggs! That's another underated ability of Jiger.
Every person claims that 'omg the eggs won't survive in such a hostile environment! The acid/radioactivity/cuteness will kill them!'
But everyone seems to forget that they survived in a living plasma furnace, undeniably one of the most hostile inner bodies of any kaiju(Except BG and any of the Unkillables)
Heck, Jiger is one of the kaiju who stands a chance against Armored Mothra. All that armor she has? It doesn't matter the skeletonizing ray attacks it at a molecular level!
May 30th, 2004, 01:26 PM
Damn! I hate not being able to edit my posts!
Also, if Jiger was able to get her stinger inside Armor mothra somehow, and inject eggs, (mayhaps in one of AM's big eyes?), Mothra has no known way to kill them short of killing herself.
May 30th, 2004, 11:12 PM
<font color='#000080'>Especially since Armor Mothra hasn't displayed the ability to burst into mini moths like Aqua Mothra and Rainbow Mothra.....
May 30th, 2004, 11:51 PM
<font color='#FF7F00'>Gyaos overall, but only in his Heisei form, not too big on the showa Gyaos
As for my fav villain in the showa....Guiron probably....he's unique
July 13th, 2004, 02:45 PM
yeah after i saw gamera vs jiger yesterday gamera was getting stung with that spike in her tail that ray witch people turn into bones and destroying a whole city. although a corny thing is gamera had to put in pole inside his head,i could of got godzilla vs barugon thank god that im going to get it tommorrow.
Didnt gamera die from that egg inside him until he got revived.
September 29th, 2004, 01:43 PM
Jiger-it was the monster that taught me that sci-fi was fun, not scary and sick.
Barugon-Superior sequel to the first Gamera movie.
Gyaos:-Fun ride with a ray-breathing Rodan clone.
September 30th, 2004, 04:51 PM
Barugon was pretty awesome, the rainbow beam is extremly powerful. Too bad his weakness is one of the things that is extremly abundant on earth.
Gyaos is cool too, I like how their story has advanced.
September 30th, 2004, 10:02 PM
I think that Barugon is Gamera's best Showa foe, because he was really tough and was a great match for Gamera.
September 30th, 2004, 11:11 PM
Guiron and Zigra for me - they need to be in a new film!
The more unique they are, the more I like them.
Barugon and Viras aren't anything very special to me, but they are still good monsters. Gyaos and Jiger are kickass!
October 1st, 2004, 11:18 AM
That is kind of a toughy for me. I like Barugon but am also fond of Gyaos and Jaiger. I guess I will choose all three. Zigra, Guiron, and Viras were good kaiju as well but I just thought they just did not seem to be as dangerous to Gamera like the other three. Although Guiron did get some good shots in.
October 12th, 2004, 08:55 PM
My favorite Gamera enemy would have to be Gyaos from the showa series. He was quite a tuff battle for Gamera and Gamera vs. Gyaos was the most watched Gamera movie for me.I would rent that one all the time as a small 4 year old boy.Now that I have the REAL american version(Return of the giant monsters)I can watch the flick anytime.(I sed to have the Sandy Frank home video version.Thats the one I watched as a kid.Ishould have kept it just to have the version I grew up with. But now I can watch the version my Dad saw as a kid!Arent flashbacks great?)My other choice would have to be Baragon because he as so COOL!Chill out Gamera!HEHE!
October 12th, 2004, 09:06 PM
Strongest: Guiron in the bag.
Deadliest: Tie between Jiger and Gaos
Most Powerful: Barugon all the way.
Coolest: Gaos wins my vote.
October 13th, 2004, 04:32 PM
My favorite without a doubt has to be Zigra. He just looked so downright cool! Sleek, shiny, and just plain mean. Plus he's the ultimate Kaiju badass when it comes to attitude, threatening to wipe every form of human defense out and kill all life on the face of the planet just because Gamera wrecked his ship! To bad he died such a tragic, pathetic, and demeaning death...
Barugon is in at a strong second place. Very unique and inventive monster, and tragically misunderstood. Plus his movie had to be the best of all the Showa Gamera films, IMO. "Read my lips... NO. KENNIES."
Showa Gyaos is another favorite of mine. He gave Gamera a real run for his money (those were long and incredible fights he put up!), and I think his movie was second-best of the series. Loved his look, too.
Viras, the single most underrated and underappreciated Gamera foe of all time, bar none (sorry Aragorn, but Jiger still gets a more-than-healthy amount of respect around the KK forums compared to him). Sure, his movie was riddled with inconsistencies and nonsensicality, but he was still a damn cool monster. And he was the only Gamera foe who didn't need some super-powerful uber-weapon to be a threat.
March 3rd, 2005, 09:42 AM
Either Barugon or Gyous. They ROCK! they almost defeated Gamera! But then again almost everyone else did!
