View Full Version : Creating A Kaiju
The Great MM

Ok, class, you have a new teacher! His name is Mista MM. I am Mista MM :p
Today I will be showing you one of my own ways on how to create original and yet effective kaiju for a fan fic. All you need for this is a piece of paper and a pencil/pen...or paint on the computer.
Part 1- Design
Step 1- Your Basic Shape.
Your basic shape is what you want your kaiju to be like. If you want it to be a dinosaur, draw the simple out line as a dinosaur. A bug, do the basic design as a bug. Here is an example, a dinosaur out line.
http://img209.exs.cx/img209/1506/15nb.png
Step 2- Arms, Legs, and Tail
This is where you choose how you want your kaiju's arms and legs to be. Say you have a dinosaur design, but want gigantic crab claws for hands, or even tentacles. And for legs, maybe you want robotic legs or normal legs. It is all up to you. Maybe for the tail, you want it normal...maybe you want it whip like, or even a scorpion tail or spiked bludgeon.
http://img195.exs.cx/img195/7038/20wn.png
Step 3- Horns, Wings, Spikes, And All That Other Fun Stuff
Here is the funnest part of making your kaiju, putting in the extra features such as horns, wings, spines, and spikes. You can add anything to your kaiju right here, extra arms, tentacles, etc. This is where your originality can really show, so don't be affraid to gut nuts! This is also when I add the eyes, ears, teeth, and such.
http://img236.exs.cx/img236/9070/37nj.png
Step 4- Detail
This is where you can add how big you want the muscles and how you want the chest to be. This is one of the easier parts to make.
http://img136.exs.cx/img136/8397/45ji.png
Step 5- Color
This can either be the funnest or most boring part of the kaiju design. You can make your kaiju multi-colored with some stripes or all one color. It is rather easy to color your kaiju, just go by what looks right in your mind.
http://img227.exs.cx/img227/1475/53oj.png
====
Part 2- Your Kaiju Origin
This is where you choose what your kaiju actually is, and there is only a number of certain things.
1. Mutation
2. Man Made (Genetic Freak, Robot, Cyborg, Experiment)
3. Deity (Demon, Devil, God, Angel, God Like)
4. Space Kaiju
5. Ancient Creature
6. Always Been There
7. Something that just evolved
8. Unknown
Choose one of these for your desired kaiju.
===============
Part 3- Kaiju Powers, Weaknesses, Strengths
This is another fun part, designing your very own kaiju powers. Do you want your kaiju to fire lightning bolts from his eyes? Spit death rays from his mouth? Send poison quills through its hand? Regenerate wounds in an instant? Transform? It's all up to you to design your powers, weaknesses, and strengths.
==========
Part 4- Name
This is the hardest part of creating...naming. Often I use language combos such as Eletepent (Electric Serpent combo). The name is usually the most original thing, cause it takes thought, though there are exceptions. Naming your kaiju something simple such as "Nightmare", "Death", and "Destructor" leaves much to be desired in the name, same thing with adding "Neo"- Insert Name of a different kaiju, "Death"- Insert Name of a different kaiju, etc. If more examples are needed, just ask.
====
These are the three fundamentals to kaiju creating- Design-Origin-Powers-Name. Your kaiju can be something unoriginal...simply a Godzilla rip off, or something super original that it can make people's jaws drop. It's very easy and can even be a good thing to use to pass the time.

Interesting Professor :) !
I would like to leave my two cents in. As seen by my old monster redo section here http://www.kaijuphile.com/forums/showthread.php?t=894 you can have fun making a monster. The example I will use is Gigantis.
Using bits and pieces from this and that I made I rather original character. She is a female of Godzilla's species and is green with purple spines. Her ray is solid red and she was Godzilla's mate. She was killed by King Ghidorah and that drove Godzilla for eons to seek vengeace.
I will let my words there speak for myself:
MY HISTORY ON HER: My idea for her began years ago. In fact, it began when I first found out about Godzilla in Ian Thorne's "Godzilla" book, which is reviewed here on the sight. It speaks of the monster in Godzilla Raids Again as Gigantis, a female monster. As I learned about Minya I asked myself could "she" have been his mother? I gave her the slimmer unused TriStar Godzilla design and wanting her to look different but not to much so I gave Godzilla 2000's colors. I am especially proud of her.
I knew that I wanted Godzilla and King Ghidorah be mortal enemies. Inspired by Ghidorah killing the dinosaurs in Rebirth of Mothra III, I knew this would fit. Wanting it to be personal, I had one of victimes by Goji's mate. (Thus allowing for the use of Godzilla Junior in the future if I so choose.)
I wanted a female Godzilla but didn't want it to look like him. Since I was using the hesei design, I decided to use the 2000 colors which never appealed to me that much as a Godzilla look but would fit well with my plan. (Color deferentiation. Godzilla is aroused by those colors in a female.) As a female, the body type for the slimmer unused TriStar design would work. The limited use of the ray in Godzilla 2000 would fit since I wanted the female to be weaker than Godzilla. As for the name, I figured Gigantis would be nice since it was the name of a "female monster" in Gigantis the Fire Monster (aka Godzilla Raids Again.) Indeed, the red ray would work well with the title fire monster.
Another example is Pele. As cut and psoted, here she is.
PELE: Hawaiian legends speak of a volcano goddess that lived in the flaming mountains that forged the islands. For years it was derided as a mere superstition but in recent times, it was revealed that the legends might indeed have been founded on a grain of truth.
The fire monster has been called Pele after the volcano goddess of Hawaiian myth though it is unknown if she did indeed serve to inspire the myth. The first sighting of her may have been near the start of the Age of Monsters when Rodan and his mate Radon were entombed in the Japanese mountain, Aso. Military observers claimed to have seen something in the lava but as the description was different for every person it was ignored for many years. That was changed when the Rodans left their volcanic prison and made their way to Hawaiian Islands, first the male and then the female.
On reaching an uninhabited and isolated island in the chain to be their sanctuary, the Rodans made their home. After that, however, a new monster arose from the blazing crater of Mauna Loa. It was one seemingly made of pure fire. It was dubbed Pele and she, though it actually has no gender it is called she, proved to be one of the strangest creatures to walk the Earth.
Pele is a silicon based life form and “her” body is made of lava. Because of that, her height and weight are variable. If she is near a volcano, she need merely absorb lava to increase her size. If she strays too far from a lava source, she will gradually lose mass. Also, her shape is variable. She can assume either the form of a walking sludge pile or she can crawl on the ground as a blob. When in battle, however, Pele adopts a human shaped, bipedal, four limbed form to more effectively strike an opponent. In this form she resembles a voluptuous human woman in her long legs, her thin waist, her rather large chest, and even her (featureless eyes only) head and the tendrils flowing from it that resemble hair. Her colors are mostly black all along her body with red vein like streaks. Her eyes are pure red and they glow while her “hair” is red with black streaks.
Made of molten lave as she is, Pele’s main attack is one of pure heat. Her merest touch burns her enemies and a full strike from the lava talons on her battle form hand can kill by burning before disemboweling. The sheer heat that radiates from her can dehydrate a foe and ignite her surroundings. She can capture a foe with solidified lava traps and she can even shoot a stream of her lava to burn a foe a distance. However, as this last attack literally drains her, Pele only does this in extreme situations or when she is near an indefinite supply of lava. She also has a near immunity to conventional forms of attack. Incendiary weapons only make her stronger, biological and chemical weapons are pointless, bullets merely go straight through her, and explosives merely scatter her body. She would merely reform herself in time.
In the opposite direction, Pele has a tremendous weakness in that she will die if she is separated for a long enough time from an intense source of heat and sufficient minerals. As she is silicon based, she needs certain minerals to survive. She is also hurt by intense cold and even water can paralyze her if exposed long enough. In that vein, UNGCC scientists have tried using cryo-weapons against her with some effect.
Pele’s territory encompasses the Hawaiian Islands. She can travel underneath the Earth’s crust in the sea of lava below and appear out of any of the volcanoes of the island chain she wishes. It is therefore logical to believe that she could appear out of any volcano in the world that she would want to. Beings less adapted have done similar things such as how Godzilla was thought imprisoned in Mt. Mihara but escaped from out Mt. Fuji soon after. However, for unknown reasons, Pele has remained in the Hawaiian island chain. She remains in her territory around the volcanoes and rarely strays from them for it is there that she is strongest.
Pele’s combat style is really non-existent. Her attitude is to act and react, nothing more. Often derided as mindless, it is seriously doubted that she even has any form of intelligence. Despite this, however, she has formed a one sided rivalry with Fire Radon. She, Fire Radon, often fights her for territory around the volcanoes and Pele fiercely defends it. Considering that Pele is purely destructive, Fire Radon is often hailed for this. Because of this, some have suggested that the in the years that Radon spent in Mt. Aso to become Fire Radon, she came across Pele. This would explain the weird sightings recorded in Mt Aso.
Because of that some have asked if there are other Peles deep beneath the Earth’s surface. Some have even asked if Pele and her alleged “sisters” are artificially created. People ask, how else does Pele know to mimic a human female’s form when in battle? This raises another question; who then, if anybody, made the monster? Considering that Pele has some similarities to Hedorah whom they were shown in a briefing with the Elias, the men and women of UNGCC have asked if Pele’s origins are extraterrestrial in nature. As of this moment, nobody knows and it doesn’t seem that that will change anytime soon.
Here's Pele. I thought of her as an afterthought while introducing Rodan and Radon in Book Two but as so many of the monsters she refused to stay an afterthought. Thus I thought of her and worked on her and now she is here. I came up with the idea as the thought of a monster made of pure fire and to comment on how both Godzilla and Rodan had been trapped in volcanos. It also gives potential to future stories. Are there other Peles underneath the Earth's crust. Just how much do we know of the world beneath our feet? What did Godzilla see while imprisoned in Mt Mihara...?
I had the idea of seeing the Hawiaan Islands in Monster Wars and I though if mentioning a fire monster is passing. She's named after the Hawiaan volcano goddess but is scientific in nature. Mada of living lava she would therefore have the power of intense heat, and malleability. She'd also have the weakness of cold. Her taking the form of a big chested woman is merely my dementia. :)
Pele doesn't appear in the Monster Wars but merely is mentioned.
Hope this proves useful. Good day!

There are two threads in LIT 101 asking, "What is the most interesting Kaiju that I have created?", one by godofPH and the other by EternalMothra.
That got me to wondering what our readers look for in an ORGINAL kaiju. Is there any paarticular aspect of it that you really focus on or is it more how it fits in the context of its story, how much of a threat it is - WJAT MAKES IT MEMORABLE?

Making it memorable is rather easy... One way is to give it some sort of unique attribute, such as giving it multiple arms, weirder types of heads, or a mixture of different types of creatures... You make some sort of mantis/shark/lizard/wolf critter...and boy...people will remember it.

A personality and unique powers can help as well. Tyraxu, a telepathic tyrannosaur able to manipulate electrical fields and fire, was once an enemy of man when he first appeared in the US and fought the military before being reasoned with. Eventually he was taken to Monster Island sometime in the early 70's and basically found some friends with other kaiju who would help him against the Spacehunter invasion and the Mutitan attack. THough prefering to be away from humans, he has slowly began to accept them and protect the Earth. He's a very persistant warrior, having taken on powerful foes over three times his size such as the Mega Mutitan, who reached a height of around 150 meters compared to Tyraxu's 45 meter height, though again, he uses teamwork with his allies to take his foes down. Since the Mutitan war of the 70's, Tyraxu has been living on the island and is indeed aware of the science bases in the main mountain and has indeed made friends with the psychic Miki Saegusa. Tyraxu waits, for he knows that he will one day face the bane of his existance, Dark Ghidorah, the very beast that destroyed his family and fellow warriors 65 million years ago. He knows that when that day comes, he will indeed put all he's got to help kill the monster once and for all, though it would take the combined strength of himself, Rodan, Anguirus, Baragon, the nine guardians of the ancients(Mothra, Battra, Gamera, Light Ghidorah, King Seesar, Megalon, Manda, the Thunderbird and the Pheonix) Kiryu, and the Earth's mightiest kaiju, Godzilla known in old Odo Island myth as a destruction god and the Earth's chaotic guardian.

I think a good Personality is something most kaiju lack these days. Like the character's you should aim at getting the reader trasnfixed on the way this monsters acts and how it seems to feel. If this is done corrrectly then when something tragic/great happens to or from the Kaiju they will feel for or against the creature...Just cause it looks cool doesn't mean it is...

A personality is very important. Just look at the tiga monster leilons.
he had a bizzare design but his personality made him memorable. His attacks were merely ok but the way he danced around the battlefield and slap his tail with his fins made him very memorable.
When designing a kaiju, it can go several ways. I tend to
1. Think of a concept(animated computer virus, aquatic chimera, neogi based creature, etc ) then design, then powers
2. think of a design, then powers, then origin
3. find an old design that I have long since scrapped, then think of an origin, then powers

Shezilla...well everybody knows about her now LOL. She's an exact clone of Godzilla, only she was engineered to be female.
Trouble is, when you play God, God bites back :(

With Chimerus, I literally did the same thing Toho did when they created Godzilla. I didn't know it at the time, but they looked at pictures of dinosaurs and took bits and pieces and put them together.
I took bits and pieces of Deinonychus, T.rex, and Stegosaurus and made them into a chimera. He kind of came with a semi-complete history in my mind, which is not very similar to what it is in the Nightmare series.

I think that it is also imperative to create a small amount of creatures and go through trial and error discarding the ones you dislike.
Another thing is to try and create your own creatures other than just slapping on a design difference onto an already existing Kaiju and calling it your own.

I had an idea for an ancient monster that was man-made by an Atlantean-styled civilization with a head like a stegosaurus, bearlike claw arms, feet and a tail like Destoroyah's, armored hide that bears a slight resemblence to the Guyver's bio armor in texture and color, and an ability to transform into a flight mode like Heisei Gamera. To emphasize its power, a monster like King Ghidorah would fight and lose to it in a brief battle. As far as names go, I thought I'd go with something like Cretaemus as a default name until I can think of something better. Now if only I could draw it...:(

One (of my many) Kaiju is named King Leogorath. He is a large semi-bipedal (like an iguanadon kinda) it was a scale covered and fur covered monstrosity. He has a great mane around his reptilian feral head armed with a pure white horn. On top of his head there is a crest supporting a large mane that fell about his back. His back is armored with a few random spikes. Leogorath has a long tail about his height long. the tail ends in a lion-like manner, but the tail is laced with long deadly spikes.
All and all Leogorath is prolly my favorite creations. His back-story is based in Africa, specifically the southern part. He is an ancient creature, older than most of civilizations can stretch back.
I have no Idea what I want to do with him
