You'd think that no one would (want to) name their band after a monster, let alone Godzilla...but behold, Gojira!

http://darklyrics.com/g/gojira.html

Unfortunately, their lyrics have nothing to do with daikaiju, but it's surprising to see a band named Gojira nonetheless. Once I've downloaded one of their songs I'll let you know if they're as good as Gojira or bad as GINO.

They are a Heavy Metal band that goes by the name Gojira. As Bruce already stated, they have nothing to do with daikaiju.

Say, if we wanted to, we could name obscure bands or songs in here as well. I'll start off with one of the best:

BATTLELORE - A Tolkein-inspired band, meanign that the lyrics deal with Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, and whatnot. They're one of the few bands in the genre of symphonic metal.
Check out these songs:
"The War of Wrath"
"The Mark of the Bear"
"Bucaneers Inn"
"Horns of Gondor"
"Ride With the Dragons"

RHAPSODY - Not as obscure on the Roost as Battlelore, but out of 600+ members, not many people know of them. They too are symphonic metal, but the unique thing is that each album tells part of a story. This isn't just a silly gimmick, it's actually really cool.
Check out these songs:
"Lord of the Thunder"
"Emerald Sword"
"Triumph for My Magic Steel"
"Queen of the Dark Horizons"
"Pride of the Tyrant"

DREAM EVIL - A metal band, sorta like Hammerfall in the way they sound. Chances are that if you like metal and like songs about swordplay and whatnot, this is for you.
Check out these songs:
"Break the Chains"
"By My Side"
"The 7th Day"
"Chasing the Dragon"
"Heavy Metal in the Night"

And how about a great song titled "Beer for my Horses" by Toby Keith? If you like country, you'll love it, but if you don't like country, you'll like it. Even I thought this song was great!

Yep, some of the best album covers, and the most memorable metal Icon, Eddie's awesome. I just wish I could have gone to see the current tour, especially since they were only doing a very, very limited amount of dates in the US. 3 in NYC, would have been 4 but they had to cancel one, and 2 in LA. http://www.rodansroost.com/ikonboard/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Sometimes I wish I lived in Europe for all the bands they get/have over there. We get crap like Metallica and they get bands like Maiden, Darkness and so much more that we will almost never see, its really a shame.

You are correct, Hudson. They had several lead singers in the '80s, including Ronnie James Dio (who, speaking of '80s heavy metal greats, went on to form his own band, simply called Dio), Ian Gillian (of Deep Purple fame), and Tony Martin. (I'm not sure if that's the complete list.)

As much as I love Ozzy's music, I have to say Dio's &quot;Heaven and Hell&quot; is my favorite Black Sabbath album. BTW, I met RJD in 1994 and got my &quot;Holy Diver&quot; album autographed.

Another good '80s heavy metal band, IMO, was Dokken. I also like the McAuley-Schenker (sp?) Group. Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, and Uriah Heep are all older bands who were still making music in the '80s. * http://www.rodansroost.com/ikonboard/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/music.gif

Yeah, I'm familiar with Dire Straits, although they actually came out in the late '70s. (&quot;Sultans of Swing&quot; was popular during the winter of 1978/79.) I like 'em OK, but wouldn't consider them &quot;the best band of all time.&quot; Just goes to show what a subjective thing music is. There are a LOT of bands on my favorites list, so it would be tough to name my own candidate for that title. If pressed on the matter, I'd probably say the Beatles.

I feel the same way, I just like &quot;Heaven &amp; Hell&quot; much more than any other Sabbath album. RJD's solos stuff is really excellent as well, &quot;Holy Diver &amp; Last in Line&quot; are two of my favorite albums.

A band you might want to check out and one I highly recommend is Iced Earth. Their newest album &quot;The Glorious Burden&quot; is really spectacular. go Gorgozilla! &nbsp;finally someone else who knows who Dire Straits is. &nbsp;i would say they they are he best band, but that's mainly because i grew up on them for a while, my sister doesn't like them, and they mention my name in a few of they're songs. &nbsp;my real name... Sultans of Swing is definately they're best song, but Romeo and Juliet is close. &nbsp;

for Pink Floyd, i like the song Dark Side of the Moon, but not really any of their others.

i also like Michelle Branch, Billy Joel, the Eagles, Men at Work, and the weirdest band ever, They Might be Giants.

Its everything from the &quot;Black&quot; album on that is utter crap. The &quot;Black&quot; album was their swing album, moving them from one of the best metal Bands to a sell out Pop Metal Band which cares nothing for their fans anymore. Why did they release &quot;St. Anger&quot; a week early, it wasnt because they wanted it to get out to the fans sooner like they claimed. They were afraid that it would get out on the internet before it went on sale and people would DL it and hear just how much it sucked and not buy it. &quot;St. Anger&quot; is absolutely one of the worst albums I have ever heard, and I dont know a &quot;pure&quot; metal fan that likes it. But yet it gets so much air play on the radio that its sickening, especially when you have alot of great bands that dont get the air play they deserve, like &quot;The Darkness&quot; or &quot;Iced Earth.&quot;

Iced Earth is actually good.&quot;

Myself, I stick to early Metallica, Def Leppard, and Led Zeppelin. Also a Black Sabbath fan, though I do prefer the Ozzie era.Stuff like NIB,Iron Man,War Pigs,Wizard,Paranoid,Sweet Leaf,Wicked World,Faires Wear Boots and alot more, just seem to stand out.
Iron Maiden are ace aswell.
Led Zepplin also great, along with Blue Oyster Cult.
Although I doubt he would be considered part of the genre being discussed,Ive developed a real liking towards Bruce Springsteen, really great music from The Boss.
But as of late, honours would go to Deep Purple.Only music I've been listening to as of late is them, and the Made In Japan remastered Live Concert albumn.I truely believe its like a work of art,and Child In Time has to be one of the greatest songs ever made.

I like Chicago also. &quot;25 or 6 to 4&quot; and &quot;I've Been Searching So Long&quot; are 2 of my faves.

I like Iron Maiden (esp &quot;Number of the Beast&quot;) Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple too. &quot;Deep Purple in Rock&quot; is a master classic. I also like a lot of Bruce Springsteen's songs, especially &quot;Born in the USA&quot; and &quot;57 Channels and Nothin' On.&quot;

There's a good reason they call him &quot;The Boss&quot;.

<font color='#810541'>Bands I like that few people I know have ever heard of:
Megadeth: the lack of knowledge of them is surprising, but Rust in Peace is the greatest metal album of all time.
At the Drive-In: Post-hardcore punk/emo stuff with the greatest guitarist of all time! See my avatar? That's him. He dances while he plays. And yes, that's a REAL afro! Though they broke up in 2000, Relationship of Command is one of my favorite CDs of all time!
The Mars Volta: The lead singer and guitarist (the two afros) from At the Drive-In in a psychadelic prog-style rock/jazz/salsa band that defies comparison, and my favorite band of all time.
Sparta: The &quot;other&quot; half of the broken At the Drive-In, though nothing like the Mars Volta. These guys are just straight up emo-type rock, and the only emo I'll listen to.
Coheed &amp; Cambria: They get the label &quot;Emo Prog&quot; a lot, but they're great. Kind of like a heavy, poppy, punkier Rush. Claudio Sanchez is my alltime favorite singer, and his lyrics tell a complex Science fiction story.
Dream Theater: Progressive Metal at it's finest, John Pettrucci is the most skillful guitar player around.

And here's stuff that others have heard of, though no one really cares about most of these bands:
The Gorillaz: Yeah, I like them. What happened to them?
Rush: Geddy Lee is a great bassist and singer.
Primus: Les Claypool is quite possibly the best bassist of all time, and quirkiest storyteller!
Revis: A friend of mine got me into them, they're just poetic rock.
System of a Down: Blame Jimi.
Radiohead: Like the Mars Volta shot with tranquilizers!
Metallica: Once my favorite band, but Master of Puppets is one of the greatest metal albums. Saint Anger sucks.
Incubus: Their new stuff, never have listened to their older stuff.
Iron Maiden: RUN TO THE HILLS!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!
Faith No More: Broke up in the mid-90's, but I really loved their first major album, The Real Thing.

Yeah, lengthy list. Don't make me have to go into detail...I am in a band, so music plays the second biggest part of my life. And don't get me started on the stuff I hate...

Um. I've hardly ever been able to hear Burton's bass. Same with Newsted. Except for a few of the songs, the bass gets buried in the barrage of guitars. You're not going to find too many albums like Signals which Digital Boy is from. Signals has a unique sound for them. But let's see, I would recommend any release up to and including Signals. After that, it's kind of hit or miss. Hold Your Fire, Counterparts, Test for Echo, and Vapor Trails are solid efforts. Try the greatest hits albums, Chronicles or Retrospective 1 and 2. <font color='#810541'>Cliff is a MAJOR inspiration for me when it comes to bass, but I agree that it is very difficult to hear him underneath Jame's and Kirk's playing. Though his work in Orion, (particularly the interlude-ish part where he starts playing, then James and Kirk come in the background and that amazing solo he does towards the end too) For Whom the Bell Tolls (I LOVE that wah!http://www.kaijuphile.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif and especially Anesthesia - Pulling Teeth, which had neither James or Kirk in it and was just a 4 minute bass solo, were great. I'm still trying to learn to play Anesthesia. I can play through For Whom the Bell Tolls pretty good though, the wah part is a bit difficult though. I was inspired by Cliff's playing to use distortion on my bass, which I do without any mercy. Jason played with a pick, and his playing locks in more with the drums, but when you can hear him, he's good. I like the intro to My Friend of Misery off of the Black album, it's fun to play. Especially when you stop doing single notes and start hitting the chords themselves. But I'm rambling now. Honestly, if he were still alive, I doubt Cliff would like much of the Black album, and definately nothing afterwards, but he may like some stuff off of ...And Justice for All...

Rush in Rio is out on CD and as a DVD concert film. (I got both cuz, y'know, I have no life http://www.kaijuphile.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ) The Rio DVD was...eye-opening. I like Rush, but not as much as I used to. And I was amazed by the reaction of the Brazilian fans. They'd never seen Rush live before, because Rush had never toured South America. And the fans went NUTS!! I would have been afraid to be there. The place was nearly a mosh pit. There's also a behind-the-scenes documentary in which this one woman who won a radio contest to meet the band is weeping before meeting Geddy and Alex. I think of a lot of things when I think of Rush, but weeping women is not one of them. http://www.kaijuphile.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

As for Hemispheres, that was the last album of the old Rush before they started writing generally shorter songs. The title song is like 18 minutes long. Two other songs are considered classics: The Trees and La Villa Strangiato (being THE Rush instrumental). Overall, it still remains one of my favorites.

Geddy's solo album is...okay. Rush-lite. It's a lot better than Alex's at any rate.

<font color='#810541'>Nah, it's that crappy Woodstock performance, but I also used to have a '93 vid of him playing it, though there was no bass solo. I have a couple of Jason's bass solos, one of which starts out as the intro to My Friend of Misery and then just goes into chord versions of it that go super fast. The other one is the doodle with Kirk that they did on the Cunning Stunts DVD.

You know,I dont listen metal half as much as I used to.I mean,I still do listen to it,but I find myself listening to 60/70/80's rock alot more these days.Stuff like Led Zep,Deep Purple(though some of there stuff could be considered metal),Rush,The Smiths,The Who,Yes,Pink Floyd,Cream and etc.

Even though I disliked them at first,The Beatles are slowly winning me over(still think Zep are better though).

And now Ive gone into rock instrumentals such as Joe Satriani,Steve Vai and Stevie Ray Vaughn(I know he does sing on his records, but its mostly guitar playing). Some great stuff there.

and I'm aware theres alot of bassists better than Burton-John Entwhistle,Chris Squire,Geddy Lee,John Paul Jones,Jack Bruce,Les Claypool(dont like Primus music,love his bass playing...annoys the hell outta me),Steve Harris,Tony Levin(dislike King Crimsons lead singers voice,but like the music...again,annoys me)Roger Waters...and I'm sure theres more.

<font color='#810541'>Of course, it's just that Cliff played my biggest inspiration. I'm really not as large of a metalhead as I used to be, now I just look for bands that are really awesome that few people know of. I love Cliff's playing and all, but I like Juan Alderete's playing in The Mars Volta much better because it's just so damn groovy! John Myung of Dream Theater is good with that 6-string, but he's harder to hear than Cliff. I have tried the 3-finger technique he uses, though. Never heard of the other bands though, nor do I have any wish to as of right now, I've got enough bassists to try to study. That, and I'm learning the dynamics of guitar, ie, how distortion and power chords give you that energetic sound when playing and how single notes and cleaner sounds bring out more depth and emotion. Blame Coheed and Cambria for this study...

They're last live album, Rush in Rio, is amazing.
Every Rush album is a good one. If your just getting into Rush, I would suggest you start with their earlier stuff. Something they do is change their style every 3 albums to keep things fresh and not keep doing the exact same things over and over again. Easily one of the best pure rock bands out there and probably the best 3 member rock band. It's simply amazing what they have done with only 3 members, so many bands could really learn allot from them.

The &quot;Rush in Rio&quot; DVD is awesome, they are an incredible live band. If you like Metal I would suggest you also pick up the &quot;Iron Maiden in Rio&quot; DVD, it goes along nicely with the Rush one. &nbsp;http://www.kaijuphile.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

As for &quot;classic rock&quot;.... I still don't see how one could pass up bands like Testament and Overkill, with all the virtosity and ferocity within, to hear MORE of what I already got sick of having FM rock stations bombard me with all day.

See what I mean? Cliff's soloing and everything was what inspires me the most. He knew theory, just like the others, but there was just something about him that made him play the way he did. Les Claypool is maybe the best bassist for all of the crazy stuff he does, Jaco Pastorius could play all sorts of high melodies and stuff, and the guy from Rancid can solo as well (check out the song Maxwell Murder,) but I just like Cliff above them all. Same way with guitarists, John Petrucci is the greatest guitarist of all time, and to quote my friend, mops the floor with Hendrix, but I like Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of The Mars Volta and At the Drive-In fame so much better.

And dont get me wrong,Cliff was an ace bassist, and probably the best member of Metallica,as a person and musical abitility,I just feel that them peole are better than him.

Instead, get some Manowar, particularly the following songs:

Okay, I don't play, but I like Freeman and I like that solo (purely as a listener). So explain why you believe, as a bassist, that it's a &quot;slopfest.&quot; In clinical terms, spare the emotion, please. I want to understand.

His choice of notes is predictable, he relies on the easiest of scales to improvise in (pentatonic), and the song wouldn't really suffer for lack of a bass solo, which suggests it was just thrown in there because he wanted to wank.

Metal Zombie
June 2nd, 2004, 04:47 PM
<font color='#810541'>In response to the scales choice and stuff, it IS punk rock. Punk rock is simple 3 chord fast-paced, energetic stuff, anything too out of whack would throw off the song, so it fits in very nicely and is a lot of fun.

Though I still think that Juan Alderete of The Mars Volta is the greatest bassist ever...He's like the hispanic combination of Flea and Jaco Pastorius!

Oh, I have no problem with homosexuality, though I'm not sure that George is gay. In fact, my favorite vocalist of all time, Rob Halford, is homosexual.

I just have a beef with Godzilla being associated with such effeminite iconry. When one thinks of Godzilla, one should also think of such masculine images as conjured in songs like Testament's &quot;Return To The Apocalyptic City&quot;, Overkill's &quot;Devil By The Tail&quot;, or even, as to drive the point home, Halford's &quot;Wrath Of God&quot;.

Yes he is Gay, he has stated it numerous times. That takes nothing away from his talent nor should it.

Their are numerous musicians who are Gay and are at the top of their profession.

Do you like Elton John?
How about Rob Halford?
How about Melissa Ethridge?

They are all gay and are three extremely talented people. I would be very glad to see any of them in concert.

Do you like Billy Idol?

You know that he used to dress in drag early in his career dont you?

And I wont even get into all the Glam/Pseudo-Metal bands of the 80's like Poison & Twisted Sister. There are just way to many of them.

The simple fact of the matter is that disliking someone because they are gay, straight, bi, black, blue, green or red is simply stupid, and has nothing to do with their musical ability.

Let me answer your first three questions...no. I like hard, heavy rock and metal.I like those as well, Metal is my favorite type of music. That doesn't mean I am ignorant to the fact that other types of music have a lot to offer. Especially when someone like Elton John, one of the most musically talented people in the world is playing that music.

Oh and just an FYI. Since you like Metal, then I will have to assume that you like Judas Priest as it was them and Black Sabbath who basically brought Heavy Metal to where it is today and Judas Priest is simply one of the greatest Metal bands of all time. Well Rob Halford is their lead singer and he is gay but he is still one of the greatest Metal vocalists of all time.

And just for the record, I am highly, VERY highly against gay.

I'll say it again, I am highly against gay. It's against my religion and should be out lawed IMO.Thats fine, and just for the record I find that people with those types of opinions are very narrow minded, shallow and ignorant. Also nothing against your or any religion, but I find that any religion that preaches any form of hate to be completely worthless and extremely hypocritical. IMO 'organized' religion should be outlawed, but just like gays, its not and its not going away.

Remember that when you go to college and have a gay professor, or when you get into the work force and have work along side someone who is gay, or better yet find out your boss is gay. What will you do then, quit? Sounds easy right now, but just wait until you actually have to pay rent, or a car loan or a student loan or even support a family, pretty much makes it almost impossible to simply quit at that point.

Why is it weird that he dresses differently? Is it weird because you dont dress that way? Is it weird because you go along with the crowd and dress like most people your age and dont have the guts to dress the way he does?

The man is a singer, that means hes an entertainer. His dress is part of what he does, it draws attention to him and makes people talk about him, it gets him noticed.

Know who Marilyn Manson is (the singer), why do you think he dresses and sings about the stuff that he does? Its because it gets him tons of free publicity. Watch him come into town to play a concert. The guy doesn't even have to advertise that hes playing, church groups that want to prevent him from playing in their towns give him more publicity than he could ever get by paying for advertisement himself, and guess what, its all free for him and it makes the people that like him want to see him even more.

Same goes for Rob Zombie, King Diamond, G-War, and now bands like Slipknot, Buzzkill, and all the other bands on the "Agressive Rock Tour" are getting into the act because its all free publicity and its works in their favor. It doesn't hurt them because the people that are speaking out against them are never going to go see them in concert or buy their cd's anyway, they just get them more notice.

I love it to, because all thes idiots trying to prevent these types of acts are doing more to promote them than they are to stop them. They are doing exactly the opposite of what they want to do. Gotta love it.

Any way you look at it, some things are just best left unsaid and kept to yourself if there is going to be dissention. Does anyone spill their heart and soul out to complete strangers? I hope not. It's not a "perfect world" out there by any means, even if your personal views may be more forgiving/accepting than "the norm". Look at other countries, cultures and their religions compared to the West as an example. We pretty much cannot conceive of certain practices and beliefs. It's the same with anything that's "different" from the familiar, from regional accents and pronunciations to more personal preferences.
When it comes to "entertainment", some of these performers do go for "shock value" to stand out from the rest. It's SHOWMANSHIP. Elvis had his music but he also took to some pretty flashy costumes. Same with Liberace, Elton John, etc. Look at music videos; a lot more fanciful than just standing in a recording studio. Even AUDIO has gone visual, it seems, but as for SOME "music", well...

Just because you say "no offense" doesn't really mean a hill of beans to me or anyone else. That's like going up to someone who is overweight and saying "No offense, but your fat." It's nice that your trying to cover your butt by saying that and thinking that it will let you slide on stuff, but sorry but it doesn't quite work like that in the real world.

I'm surprised you don't think that saying "That's fine, but just for the record" is the same as saying "No offense." Because you just called half the people in the U.S. narrow-minded and ignorant and apparently thought that adding in "just for the record" you'd get away with it.

Please explain.

Your lack of understanding the American English language is amazing.

The phrase "and just for the record" is saying that THIS IS my stance on the matter. I am pointing that out FACTUALLY by saying that. I am not trying to get away with anything as I just TOLD YOU that this is my opinion.

OK, I am now officially disgusted. Somebody actually said they'd like to see Elton John? That miserable, talentless sack of mouse refuse? Gay, normal, or a lime-green avocado, I don't care, I think Elton John's music is fit only for elevators - so people will be more inclined to work their fat backsides off by using the stairs. Seriously, they might as well slap a warning label on his CDs like they do with these idiot rappers, only in his case it should read: 'Warning, this music is so mundane, pathetic and completely mellow that it may cause severe depression, melancholia and dangerously high levels of boredom.' I mean, I hear about metal bands like Ozzy and Black Sabbath getting blamed for suicides all the time - how many mooks has the absolute suckiness of Elton John pushed over the edge? All those little brats who don't catch on that his 'Academy Award' winning music is the same in every single Disney abomination he scores?

P.S. nothing is wrong with Boy George. His lifestyle, hell, maybe even just his public lifestyle is definetly odd/different, but there's nothing wrong with that. Tons of people are like that.. they're just not famous, and he happens to be.

I felt the required NEED to post that link for a few specific members to see. And if you're too lazt to vist, here it is itself. A fabulous poem written by a fellow Kaiju Fan:

"What is weird? How are you weird for your interests? Stuff you liked yesterday automatically makes me an outcast today. How does me having an interest that you don't make me stupid, gay, disabled or weird? How does me having a mind of my own make me stupid? You are the stupid one without a mind. You only follow what the media and others say. The media's nothing but deceitful lies that try to change and manipulate everyone. Cars, television and objects are only forms of entertainment. Just because you don’t like a form of entertainment I like, doesn't make me weird. It makes me an individual. You are not an individual. You all try to act the same, look the same, and dress the same. How does not being an individual make you better than me? It makes you the same as everyone else.
How does being mean, mocking and humiliating others because of their interests make you cool and popular? If that’s what it takes to be liked by others why would I want to be a part of it? If you can't accept me for who I am, why hate me for who I am? Hating leads to more hating, which leads to arguments, which leads to fights, which leads to pain. Nobody enjoys pain. If you enjoy the suffering of others, how does that make you superior to me? How do my interests make me wrong? They don't, the discrimination of people because of their interests are wrong! How does the way I look, act, speak, think and find forms of entertainment make me wrong? They don't!
I long for the days when everybody is accepted for who they are, whether you're popular or a loser, whether you're a jock or a geek, or whether you're black or you're white.
How could I be so different, we're all human. Same species, same blood and same skins. How could that make me so different, how could that make me weird?"

I wasn't getting on your case, I was trying to show you and point out that certain things you said just didn't make any sense. Whether you like Boy George or not doesn't matter, I don't like his music myself, but that doesn't mean that others don't.

Like when you said he is wierd. You made the comment but gave absolutely no reason for that conclusion, which is why I asked you what I did. When you throw out an opinion on a message board, you have to expect people to question it, especially if you don't give a reason for that opinion.

As for the "No Offense" thing. Again I was trying to show you that just putting that in your message does not make it any less offensive to someone. Typically people use that expression when they want to insult or offend someone and make it look like they are not doing that. Here's an example of what I mean, walk up to different people and say "No Offense, but your a ***," "No Offense, but your fat," or "No Offense, but your stupid." How do you think the person you say that to is going to react to those comments? I can tell you, they are going to feel insulted, disrespected, down on themselves and angry at you, and that "No Offense" isn't going to make them say "Oh, I guess its ok, he didn't really mean it."

So I wasn't trying to get on your case, I was trying to show you that what you were saying needed to have something more than just a stray comment with no reason behind it and that the other thing you said was offensive even if you thought it wasn't.

okay, for anyone who's seen Adam Sandler's the Wedding Singer, the guy dressed like a girl who sings "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" is Boy George. it was a funny scene, when the song ends, he stops, pauses, then signals to start the song over again. its the only song he sings in the movie. the dialouge kinda goes like:
BG: "Do you really want to hurt me? do you really want to make me cry?"
random peple in audience: "You stink!" "get off the stage!"

so yeah, a great movie. other than this, i dont know anything else about Boy George.

There's a wanna-be art house theatre called the alamo drafthouse (mostly, the premise is that it's a resturaunt inside of a theatre.), and they played that. They called it the dark side of the rainbow. I never saw it though.

Speaking of Pink Floyd! The Legendary pink dots are coming totown tomorrow and i'm going to miss them... just like when I missed Big head todd (AND his monsters). I swear, I HAVE TO see Skinny Puppy, though. I don't know how long they'll stay together again...

Aha! Connection! Nivek Ogre's solo stuff (he calls it Ohgr and I don't know why) is officially better than the actuall skinny puppy at this point. And I was gonna say that, since there is alot of metal talk going around this thread (though I thought it was a MUSIC thread ;) , I recommend all metal fans under the age of 17 listen to Oghr's song "Cracker" off of Welt (the original name for his solo stuff, which is an acronym for "When Everyone Learns the Truth")

Good luck everyone! Watch out for the icecaps!

Has anyone else heard this album? It's apparently not supposed to come out till the end of July, but I downloaded it, heh. Just wondering what you guys think of it? I initially hated it, but I do that with EVERY album I listen to for the first time, so I'ma be listening to it for a bit more before I put out a rational decision on its greatness or lack thereof. The guitar work is definitely closer to the oldschool stuff than, say, The World Needs a Hero. But the sound of the singing is more pop in a way, I dunno.

Anyway I'm looking forward to the "remixed and remastered" Rust in Peace, though if they royally screw it up, I still have my old one here. :)

Dave's hand has healed 100% and yeah, this is a new album. In addition, eight albums are being "remixed and remastered", much in the way Killing is my Business was. Bonus tracks too. They include everything up to Risk, including his MD45 release, excluding Hidden Treasures. They'll be out on July 27th, but you can pre-order them (and get some more information) at Megadeth.com.

Some more info...

MEGADETH's new album, "The System Has Failed", is scheduled for release on September 14 through Sanctuary Records. The CD was recorded at Phase Four studios in Tempe, Arizona and features mainman Dave Mustaine alongside drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and bassist Jimmy Sloas. Additional lead guitar tracks were laid down by former MEGADETH guitarist Chris Poland.

It sucks that Dave Jr isn't doing bass on the new album, he was the only member aside from Dave himself that stayed in the band during it's run. I've never heard of this other guy. Yeah, but CD-R's are good to make copies to keep in the car, at work and even at school so that you dont have to keep carrying the original around and risk it getting damaged or stolen.

I can't wait to hear this album, I have a feeling its going to be pretty good. Its also nice that they are doing the remasters as well.

You edited it for the quote. I just pointed that part out because of one song, which is actually catchy. You'd have to understand the whole storyline, which I guess I could try to do. It's about this couple named Coheed and Cambria. Coheed gets this syrum injected into him by a dragonfly that transforms him into Monstar, an alien beast with the ability to either save or destroy the universe. I'm not completely sure why, but Coheed and Cambria kill off 3 of their 4 kids, except for Claudio (named after the lead singer,) who runs away and goes into hiding. Coheed and Cambria both die somehow, and Earth breaks away from the Keywork, which is this system that keeps all the planets in some sort of order. A fairy named Ambellina comes and tells Claudio after he survives some sort of war that he is the Crowing, a sort of messiah-like figure, and to tell him that his parents are dead. So obviously, he goes through a lot of emotional trauma, and it's basically his job to keep things from falling apart. Al is merely some minor character who runs this space ship called the Velourium Camper that Claudio has to get on. Oh, and he gets chased by snipers and falls in love with some girl who backstabs him and stuff too. Thank God they're releasing a comicbook about all of this.

As for the racial issue, their lead singer IS hispanic, and despite that song, people really love the band and the storyline. I mean, they ARE becoming quite popular. And I have several friends who like that particular song and sing along to it, and like me, they are white, and unlike me, they are girls.

Creed DID break up. Now there's some new band called Alter Bridge which, IMO, sounds JUST LIKE CREED. It's the same band, only with a new lead singer. And I never liked Creed, so meh.

And slightly O/T,but its too good not to add.Got from http://students.imsa.edu/~stoo/index.html ,an excellent record review site, and I tryed this today...and wowee...its bloody brilliant.(More proof that Pink Floyd rock):

There's one other thing I want to talk about with this album, though. Whereas virtually everyone knows about the DSOTM/Wizard of Oz synchronicity, very few know about the connection between Meddle and Fantasia. The recipe is as follows; program your stereo to play, in this order, Echoes, One of these Days, Pillow of Winds, and Fearless, on endless loop. In the movie, start the playlist as the conductor fades to red and the animation comes into play. It's a little hard to get exactly right, but you'll know it if you did it correctly. Highlights include Mickey dancing to the bassline in OOTD, his destruction of the broom as you hear Mason saying "One of these days I'm gonna cut you into little pieces," the conductor directing Gilmour's solo in Echoes, and the episode with the fairies being trippier than anything you thought Disney could possibly produce. I've run this six or seven times, and I have yet to grow tired of it. Do it today.

man i could make this a really long list..but ill try not to

Favorite Bands
1)korn - id say your pretty damn good if you can create your own musical genre. my favorite band
2)Disturbed - what can i say?
3)flaw - amazing band...heavy riffs with heartfelt lyrics...whether chris volz is screaming or using his powerful singing voice (his mother was an opera singer who taught him) it just sounds beautiful. highly recommended to anyone into the genre
4)evanescence - incredible band and although im not some obsessed little fanboy i DO believe amy lee could be the most beautiful woman on earth.
5)Depswa - saw them on ozzfest and immediatly loved their stuff. their album is called two angels and a dream its a great album.
6)Dope - this band is pretty good...definetly have an angry edge to them. good band with few downfalls.
7)Ozzy Osbourne - who doesnt like ozzy?
8)Iron Maiden - just awesome
9)Nirvana - these guys took the EASIEST guitar riffs ever and made them sound good. smells like teen spirit is pathetically easy to play.
10)The Offspring

i literally could go on forever but heres a few bands i want to say something about

Metallica - one of my favorite bands...then BOOM WTF HAPPENED? st anger is crap. pure grade a 100% crap. lars traded in his drum kit for a set of coffee cans apparently...maybe they should go back to being drunk all the time they sounded a LOT better.

Papa Roach - i used to like these guys alot. then i saw them in a friggin pepsi blue commercial...ok brittany spears does pepsi commercials..not nu-metal bands. and ive heard so many times in their interviews "we dont do it for the money..." yeah right.

Matchbox 20 - their first album is just incredible...can listen to it straight through. their second one had maybe two good songs on it...bent being the best. and their third one is ok a step up but my question is...wheres the greatness that was Yourself or Someone Like You?

Creed - ok they were great in the beginning then turned to crap...now lemme get this straight...they "broke up" but everyone but the lead singer are still together in a new band called alter bridge or something like that....wonder what the problem was in THAT band...

like i said i love Wayyyyyyyyy too many bands but the main ones are korn, disturbed, flaw, evanescence and depswa. korn being my favorite. i didnt even go into all the old bands i like (aerosmith, ac/dc, etc.)

Battlelore - WAR OF WRATH! WAR OF WRATH! WAR OF WRATH!

Rhapsody - Honestly, the only bad part is the narrator. *cringes*

Blind Guardian - What's not to like? They did a Silmarillion concept album, for cryin out loud!

Dragonforce - If you try to headbang to it, you'll get whiplash.

Dream Evil - Just an overall good power metal band.

Falconer - The baritone vocals are a fresh change of pace from nuts-in-vice stuff.

Megadeth - Nuff said.

Hammerfall - Another good power metal band with good vocals.

Luca Turilli - Pretty much Rhapsody without the narrator.

Bal-Sagoth - Symphonic black metal at its best, really.

Iced Earth - No explanation required.

Kick Axe - A band that says, "WE ROCK!" and does a good job of it.

Iron Maiden - Nuff said.

Are there any fans of Yes on here? I kept hearing about how awesome Chris Squire's basslines are, so I downloaded Roundabout and I love it, but I wanna know what other good songs of theirs are. Nothing beats the trebly thump of a Rickenbacker bass...Yes are ace, simple as that. And yeah,Chris Squire is brilliant, and so is roundabout.Best tracks,in my view are Starship Trooper,Yours is no disgrace,Perpetual change,The Fish(bassicaly a bass solo from Chris),Heart Of The Sunrise,South Side Of The Sky,I've seen All The Good People,Close To The Edge(20 minutes long, and it pop song structure....but works, somehow),Siberian Khataru and And You And I(the last three are all from the same album...so its an album with 3 songs).Others I havent got round to listening to yet but are supposedly good are Gates of Delirium(another 20 minute one),and The Awaken(the former from Relayer, the latter from Going For The One)

Best albums would be The Yes Album,Fragile,Close To The Edge, and from what I've heard(should be getting them some time soon though),Relayer and Going For The One.

Of course there is the most conterversal album of theirs(and of all time possibly)Tales From The Topographic Oceans.Basicaly an albumn with 4 side long songs.Havent got it yet,but the things I've heard said about it split the Yes fandom down the middle. Its either loved or loathed,I haven't seen any middleground opinions on it yet.

Creed - ok they were great in the beginning then turned to crap...now lemme get this straight...they "broke up" but everyone but the lead singer are still together in a new band called alter bridge or something like that....wonder what the problem was in THAT band...
Basically Scott Stapp & Mark Tremonti let their ego's get way to big and wanted to do different things with the group so they split. Now you have "Alter Bridge" which is Creed minus Scott Stapp, and replacing him on vocals is Myles Kennedy. I picked up their album today to check it out and it's an excellent album, basically it's Creed. Hell even the new singer reminds me a bit of Scott Stapp, but he's not even close to being as good a singer as Stapp is. Stapp will be releasing a solo album I believe next month. This is the one im more interested in seeing because as Creed, he had a great band behind him. So I want to see if the people with him are even close to that good and if not will he beable to lift them up to a higher level or will they bring him down to a lower level.

Though its really to bad they broke up, they were a fantastic band and one that if they stayed together could have put the Beatles #1 singles mark in jeopardy. I mean they only made 3 albums and had what 11 #1 singles, 8 of which were in a row which is a record in its own right. Those boys new what they were doing, such a shame to see it blow up like it did.

Actually, the Doors are touring again with the original guitarist and keyboardist, but with a new singer (Ian Astbury from the Cult) and 2 alternating bassists. They're actually planning on releasing an album of original material next year too. I got this out of Bass Guitar Magazine.

Also, aside from Yes, I've fallen for 3 more bands:

Mr. Bungle: One of Mike Patton's many side projects. Patton is a looney singer, who's vocals are a bit of an acquired taste, and the band is definately diverse. You can recognize so many styles in their music, it's insane.

Modest Mouse: Their latest CD (Good News For People Who Love Bad News) and single (Float On) are really catching on, and that's a good thing. This band is quite diverse too. The vocals are a bit of an acquired taste as well, but they fit perfectly, and the bass focuses more on higher notes and a lot of sliding, which I absolutely LOVE. They're not a basic band either, considering all of the stuff they do.

Muse: It's like you're listening to something similar to Queen one second and then all of a sudden you're hit with a fuzzed out flurry of guitar distortion. And I mean that in a good way. All 3 of these bands, as soon as you turn them on, will make you think "Holy crap, I'm in for something DIFFERENT," and your thoughts wont be let down. These British Art-rockers are becoming quite popular as well. Once again, excellent bass.

I'm really glad that people are FINALLY getting tired of the cookie-cutter approach that mainstream rock has had for a while now and are starting to look for something more unique and outside of the box. I guess music has hit a sort of renaissance period once more, and I for one am glad that this has happened!

My overall favorite band is Motley Crue.

Other bands include:

Bon Jovi
Metallica
Iron Maiden
Alice Cooper
Weird Al
Scorpions
Guns N' Roses
AC/DC
Judas Priest
KISS
Slaughter
Queensryche
Damn Yankees
Skid Row
Velvet Revolver

Ratt
Ozzy/Black Sabbath (though I don't listen to them on a normal basis, I enjoy listening to him/them when their music is played)

That's what I remember from the top of my head.

I have to say Green Day the greatest band on the face of the earth their albums are always best sellers and album of the year.

Have to disagree, I don't think they are the greatest band. With the exception of the occasional Boulevard of Broken Dreams (though it is reeeaaallly overplayed) and Holiday, I don't find their songs to be so great; they just don't stand out to me.

And just to note, when Dr. Feelgood was released by Crue in '89 it was number 1. So the bands I like have had their time in the spotlight, too.

By the way, never quote ANY rock band/star on anything in concerns for their fans because most if not all (As many artist are) are pompous pricks who only care for themselves and the size of their wallet. Case in point: Jimmy Page letting Puffy Diddy Bang Bang or whatever rework Zeppelin's greatest song, "Kashmir", into a hip hop theme song for GINO! AND HE EVEN PLAYED THE GUITAR PARTS! Now, he did say he did this because he likes what Daddy Puff Shoot Em Up did with the song with all the violins and crap but still, if Jimmy Page, one of the Gods of Rock and Metal music from probably one of the most influental bands and probably the most obscure of celebrities (As well as the entire band themselves) can sell out then no one is NOT safe from the impending wrath of that royalty check.

I have one band that doesn't let personal reasons/disputes get in the way of performing for fans: Motley Crue.

The Red, White and Crue anthology wouldn't be here if it wasn't for a campaign in Europe to reunite Crue. For 6 years, Crue has been without drummer Tommy Lee and has been split up. But, the Crue got back together, put aside their differences FOR THE FANS. Mick Mars even joined in. Mick Mars, the guitarist, was addicted to oxycottin and could hardly move (bone degenerative disease). He was and still is in rough shape. But he got hip replacement surgery so he could perform.

I even have a clip where Nikki Sixx (bassist, founder) says something along the lines of, "The fans motivated us to get off our fat asses and start playing again!".

Just wanted to let you all know there are still some bands out there who care for their fans.

Saruman
May 27th, 2005, 11:33 PM
I'll give you that one, they did get back together to tour for the fans, even though they still really can't stand each other, gotta give the Crue their props.

Other bands that care about their fans, top of my list is Iron Maiden, they have always been about the fans through their entire history. They never once did it for the money but for the passion of the music and the fans. I just hope I can make OzzFest to see them, it's going to kill me if I miss them this time.

Kiss is another band that keeps going because of their fans. God knows they have done enough retirement tours, but the fans keep bringing them back.

Megadeth, people can say what they want about Dave Mustaine, but he is totally loyal to his fans, maybe more so than just about anyone. It's his passion for his fans that keeps him going. Something I really respect about him is that he isn't afraid to tell his fans how he feels. If they are *****ing about a member of his band, then he sets them straight. Thats something about Dave I have always liked and his fans do respect him for it.

Queensryche I would also put high up on the list. They could have been the next big mega band if it wasn't for the Alternative/Grunge invasion that pushed Metal & Hard Rock to the back burner. Hell they might have put out the greatest Metal Album ever in "Operation Mindcrime," (Can't wait for OPMC2). These guy have kept going though and are still cranking out great music today and it's all for the fans.

Other notables:

Dream Theater
Def Leppard

More as I think of them.

Goji Son
May 28th, 2005, 12:01 AM
Ok, I was a little harsh about that, I didn't mean they don't give a **** about their fans, hell Page, Plant, and Jones of Zeppelin all still play with their own repective bands just because they love it.

What I mean't was that sometimes their head gets a little big and they start to think that they can tinker around with their work that was already perfectly fine to begin with. There are still alot of bands and musicians around who do it because of the fans and the art, Eric Clapton, Crue, Moody Blues, etc.

My intention for the post was purely humorous and not to be taken totally literal.
