Long ago Bette Bao Lord wrote a children's book, called "Jackie Robinson and the Year of the Boar." Taking place in 1947, it was about a young Chinese girl named Bnadit who goes with her mother to America to be with her father who has made a home in New York City. After taking the name Shirley Temple Wong, her family is reunited in a strange land which will take some getting used too. As the year passes, Shirley makes friends, fits in, and finds hope in baseball and her favorite player, is Jackie Robinson.
Taking heart that deep down, despite, missteps it may have made, America is a good country which welcomes the tired, the poor, the huddled masses yearning to breath free, Shirley Temple Wong finds hope in her new country as she experiences all sorts of misadventures in the Year of the Boar.
What say you?
