Everyone's pissed off about the '98 Godzilla film, and quiet honestly, I didn't think it was that bad. I still like the original Godzilla better, but this one wasn't the worst film I've ever seen. It would be a lot better if they took Gino and made him something that didn't relate to the original Godzilla. At least in the '98 Godzilla, they had a Japanise guy saying "Gojira" in a Japanise fishing boat.
Now Toho took King Kong and totally **** him up. They make him taller, they give him a totally different background, and the stupid lightning bolts that come out of his fingers. I find Todd Tennant's version of King Kong Vs. Godzilla a lot better than Toho's, simply because they gave Kong his original origin, and didn't give him the lightning fingers.
Hasn't anyone else noticed this?

If they didn't make Kong taller and stronger and givve him something like lightning to combat Godzilla it would have been a slaughter. Also remember, Kong needed a hole new back round for this movie.

The new background and sizing Kong up never really bothered me about the Toho Kong. As was stated he needed to be sized up to battle Godzilla and because of the drastic increase in size there had to be a new background story to differentiate this Kong for the RKO Kong.
I will admit I never liked the "Lighting Powers" Kong had but I can see why they gave them to Kong. Without them he would not of stood a chance against Godzilla.
My thoughts on why the Toho Kong is accepted and the Tristar Godzilla is not is bacause the changes to the Toho Kong still left him recognizable as King Kong while the Tri -star Godzilla was a far cry from the orginal.
To illustrate my point. In King Kong 33 Kong is a giant Gorilla who comes from an island where he is worshiped as a diety, he fights other monsters who he considers a threat to himself or his territory, and who is taken to civilaztion agaisnt his will.
Toho Kong is is a giant Gorilla ( Albiet much larger than his 33 counterpart) who comes from an island where he is worshiped as a diety, he fights other monsters who he considers a threat to himself or his territory, has "Lighting Powers" and who is taken to civilaztion agaisnt his will. Pretty much the same character except for the Lighting powers.
Then Look at Toho Godzilla and Tristar Godzilla
Toho Godzilla - Is a dinsosaur tunred into a radioactive monster due to h-bomb testing. He is indestructabe, attacks in the face of aggression, decimatets cities, threatens the world with nuclear holocaust, and for the most part cannot be stopped by man.
Tristar godzilla- is an iguana mutated into a giant lizard, turns tail and runs in the face of aggression, hides in cities, threatens the world with overpopulation, and is easily killed by man and his weapons.
When comparing Toho Kong to RKO Kong clearly changes were made by Toho, but the traits and personality of Kong remained the same. The same cannot be said of Tristar and Toho Godzilla.

Toho did Kong reasonably well. There was that crazy looking suit however.... :(
In any case, they did respect Kong and kept him as a ferocious beast that beat his chest and that took human woman for his own. While Toho reimagined him to a great degree, they kept most of what made him great.
Devlin and Emmerich... the reason we look up to Godzilla is because he's a tough guy, he's "bada.ss," for lack of a better word. Zilla's just... cowardly.

The thing with Bob the Retarded Iguana is that he was a total mockery of the monster king while Toho's Kong was more like regular Kong on steroids which is just fine, except for the goofy looking suits(though I think Kong's face actually looked better in KKvsG then in KKE)

I once saw a link somewhere that said "What really happened when King Kong fought Godzilla?" When I clicked on it, there was a picture of Godzilla shaking his leg, which has a small (about a foot tall relative to G) ape clinging to his ankle. Godzilla's saying, "Leggo my leg, you annoying little monkey!"
The reason I mention that is to illustrate a point already made; the necessity of upscaling Kong to fight Godzilla. I do agree the suits are goofy looking, but of course they were trying to market to kids and didn't want to scare them.
I don't really hate GINO, I just don't consider it to be Godzilla. I'd like the movie better if it were called "Iguano." We could all have fun with that title. Just drop the I.

I think true die-hard Kong fanatics would beg to differ. I personally don't mind Toho's Kong, but then again I don't really mind Tristar's "Godzilla" either.

My only real problem with Toho Kong was the flea-bitten gorilla suit. Other than that, and the lighting power to a extent, the movies with him were enjoyable.

I know that all Godzilla fans including me thought that (in our stupidity) that Hollywood wouldn't actually screw up when making a Godzilla movie but, Ginois just Tristar trying to make Godzilla "realistic" , which I use lightly, to apeal to Americans. I actually liked the Gino movie as a non-godzilla movie, and like my dad always says, hollywood always finds some way to mess up movies.
