E.V.O.: Search for Eden

Has anyone else played this old game? Since I didn't really get into the gaming scene until the early 2000's, I'm not very familiar with games of the 16-bit era. I first heard of this game when GameInformer mentioned it in their monthly Game Over quiz section, they featured it as a slight jab at the upcoming Spore by claiming E.V.O. was better because it gave players the option to evolve their character into a Mermaid. However, the concept of a action/RPG sidescroller with a focus on evolving your character interested me; and I headed over to ROM World to download this SNES title. E.V.O. tells the tale of Gaia, daughter of the creator/sun-God Sol, and the creatures she guides through the various eras of Earth's history and helping creatures evolve along the way. The players start in the Age of Fish, progress to the Age of Amphibians (Permian Era), Age of Dinosaurs (Mesozoic Era), Age of Mammals (primarily takes place in the Ice Age), and finally the fictional Age of Eden. Along the way, players start to uncover another external force influencing evolution on the planet, albeit in a destructive way.
Its pretty enjoyable for me, but it may put off some. It's pretty slow gameplay, and it takes a while to harvest enough EVO points (currency used to purchase upgrades) to make a significant change. Even worse, you are stripped of all your upgrades and EVO points after entering a new Era. However, I found the Evolution system to be quite enjoyable once enough points are harvested to get useful upgrades. It's quite satisfying to finally get enough EVO points for a Jaw upgrade and be able to tear through foes that once had you running away from them because they were so much stronger than you. You can build up quite a fierce creature in any era, the Evolution system allows you to gain upgrades in 8 different areas (Jaws, Horns, Neck, Body, Hands & Feet, Dorsal Fin, Tail, and Back of the Head).

The Queen Bee is the single most cheap boss in a game..ever. I can't get past it...
My noble purple-dragon beast just isn't strong enough...

You need mobility against the Queen bee.
Drop a size level if you haven't already.

I LOVE this game. I still pop it in my S-Nes occasionally and play it.
