^Same here, the closest people I know that are interested in Godzilla are the Zero Hour crew, and they're a good hour away from my hometown.

The print was transferred to HD on the state-of-the-art, full resolution, Dual Link Da Vinci Color Correct System. The end result will be the best DVD presentation of the film to date."
The scratches, flecks, etc are on Toho's negative for GODZILLA. When GODZILLA was first made Toho did not put a lot of effort into preserving the original materials and they've never done a restoration of the film. A few years back Koichi Kawakita (special effects director for the Heisei Godzilla films) requested that GODZILLA and THE MYSTERIANS be restored for the Japanese R2 DVDs and Toho refused. If Toho's not going to do a restoration for their own DVDs, they're certainly not going to do it for a foreign release.
In 2004, Bruce Goldstein (head of Rialto Pictures and the man in charge of GODZILLA's 50th anniversary theatrical release) said this about Toho's materials for GODZILLA: "It's not the greatest print I've ever shown. It's an old negative. I asked Masa [Toho international sales manager Masaharu Ina], "are you sure it's OK?" And he said, "It's the same negative we've been printing off of for 50 years." Maybe that's a bad thing. [laughs] "
For the GOJIRA DVD, Classic Media made the most of the materials Toho had, and the result looks as good or better than Toho's R2 DVD, Madman's R4 Australian DVD, Rialto's US theatrical release, and BFI's R2 British DVD. There won't be any radical improvements until Toho gives the film a thorough restoration, and I doubt that will be happening in the near future.

I think that is BS because the DVD Region 0 copy I got looks great. The print looks clear.

You just said you had Region 2.
Also, it's not bull. The guys ON THE COMMENTARY mention the poor conditions themselves MANY TIMES if you ever actually listened.
The ONLY complaint I have is the subtitles: I can hardly see them half the time.

And you call yourself a kaiju fan... Godzilla over Gamera, everytime, all the time. I should ban you where you stand.

Re: September 5- G-DAY!!
Just finished watching my copy (found at Wal-Mart of all places). All I have to say is - wow! This is the way every Godzilla movie should have been released. It was a long wait, but damn was it worth it. My hat is off to Classic Media, they have so amazingly exceeded expectations that it is simply stunning. From packaging to menus to extras, we have a release that is really slick and dignified. Did anyone else note the credits on 'Godzilla, King of the Monsters'? I never even knew there were end credits, they never showed 'em on TV broadcasts and they have never featured on ANY previous video/DVD release. So again, top marks. Really looking forward to the rest of Classic's library getting this treatment (anybody else drooling over a Rodan that is this well done).

I never said I had the Region 2. It says Kaiju Collection on it and on the back Region 0. I thought most people here would have that bootleg? And yeah I HEARD THE COMMENTARY. But it isnt true with my copy. IF MINE IS A CLEAR PRINT, then this SHOULD HAVE BEEN. It also has white subtitles and not the yellow, which is harder to read.

Granted, you never say this is the version you have, but Keith debunked the whole "Region 2 is clear" thing (which, if you don't have, how would you know?).

Re: September 5- G-DAY!!
Got my copy at Best Buy. It was the last copy in the SciFi section(Didn't check the new release section, so I don't know exactly how many were there. The DVD is great. The video quality is the best it can be(american version is better though, picture quality wise), but it's a 50+ year old movie so don't expect it to be perfect, plus Keith said it's the best it could get anyway.
I'm sure CM is doing jumping jacks with the sales of the DVD.

Re: September 5- G-DAY!!
How ARE the sales doing, anyways?
Anyone have any charts?
Plus, as some of the commentary reveales, PARTS of the film, IE those of real life military, were shot in more primative print, and thusly were in worse shape.
Be happy we got what we got.

Re: September 5- G-DAY!!
I'd say its selling pretty good. Every place I've been has either sold out or had only one copy left in the New Release section. Thats not saying much, since most stores probably only has two or three copies out to begin with, but still.

An employee at my local Best Buy said the first shipment consisted of about 20 copies and they were gone when I went there.

Re: September 5- G-DAY!!
20 copies is alot for one store. I also thought a store would only have, at the most 5 copies.
I must say though, that i'm having a hard time believing that a store sold out with 20 copies for a "Godzilla" disc. If that's accurate CM is really doing flips.

Not saying it was true, that's just what the employee told me. I went there on Friday, so it had been a few days. Or I might've misunderstood him. I don't know.

Re: September 5- G-DAY!!
I'm pretty happy to see the DVD doing so well, I don't think it will cause a resurgance in Godzilla and a film will come out of it, but atleast people are interested in seeing the real Gojira. When I saw the Rialto distributed film at my local art museum there was quite a crowd and the people seemed to enjoy the film. Sure, there was one guy snickering at the topless women on Odo Island or the line about a defiant woman apologizing for speaking up for herself in the courtroom but that's more attributed to culture.
I think Godzilla has potential to become rebirthed but whoever does it can't just treat it like some campy monster flick, the story has to have some weight in it.

Do you have a Fred Meyer where you live? That's where I got my copy.
Anyway, all I can say is that getting this was nothing short of a beautiful dream come true. I especially enjoyed the commentary by Steve Ryfle and Ed Godsi.....oh, well, I can never spell that guys last name (with all due respect to him)

Re: September 5- G-DAY!!
I was very very disappointed to not get my copy this weekend, but I will have it. I just gotta go online.
Has anyone checked Classic Media's site to see if there's any info on how the disc set is doing?
Maybe even IMDB might have something....
Here's the link to contact anyone at Classic Media:

Re: September 5- G-DAY!!
Well fans, and Jet Jaguar, I have taken the liberty of e-mailing Robert Mayo. He's the head of home video for Classic Media. So hopefully, he would more likely than not, know the results of Gojira's success. Below, is a copy of the e-mail I just sent him. Wene (IF) I get a reply back with results, I will let you guys know ASAP.
_____________
Dear,
Robert Mayo,
It has come to my attention, and many other Godzilla fan's, that the newly released Gojira DVD has been selling very well. So well infact, that many copies in stores are out of stock! I have a report of a supposedly 20 DVD shipment of Gojira at Best Buy selling out in a just a short while. So to feed our curiosity, I, and other fans wish it to be disclosed of the results for Sales of Classic Media's Gojira DVD. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. I (and we), look forward to your reply. Thank you.
