Nightwish is an interesting band, I think Rammstein are Industrial, are they not?
Haven't heard of the others. Nice to see someone actually bothered responding to the thread though. I do know there is a large group of Maiden fans on this forum.

Re: Metal
Powerman 5000 went from Rap Metal, to Alternative and now they're mutated into some Green Day wanna-be band, (in other words, they suck.). But "Tonight The Stars Revolt" and (if you can find it) "Anyone for Doomsday?" are awesome albums.
Dragonforce has some of the fastest guitars I've ever heard, crazy. Rhapsodys in the same genre (Battle Metal) and are similar.
I think Rammstein count as Metal/Industrial.
Fun-fact; the lead singer of Powerman 5000 is Rob Zombies little brother. =O

Re: Metal
Summoning for all you Tolkien fans. I also have been listening to Sabaton quite a bit, who have some great war-themed songs. Manowar also comes to mind.

Re: Metal
I like just about every subgenre of metal, to some extent. I listen primarily to thrash, power and symphonic/epic metal, but I also listen to a bit of doom and death (and, yes, even a bit of metalcore). For the record, these are among my favourite metal bands:
Bal-Sagoth
Battlelore
Blind Guardian
Candlemass
Demons & Wizards
DragonForce
Dream Evil
Falconer
Hammerfall
Manowar
Megadeth
Nevermore
Nightwish
Pantera
Rhapsody Of Fire
Sabaton
Slayer
Symphony X
Therion
There are a bunch of other bands I could name, but then it would get unwieldy. BTW, I've been meaning to check out some black metal bands. Does anyone have some recommendations as to which albums I should check out?

Re: Metal
I prefer the old school metal to modern metal, like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest. And, I guess Metallica counts, since they have metal in their name.

I am not into the super evil scream stuff. I am sorta out of the loop on the specific music genres once yoiu get past "rock". Could you inform me as to what classifies a band as Trash, Thrash, Industrial, etc? Anyway, I like heavy rock which I think classifies as Metal. Anyway-
Disturbed
Drowning Pool
Metallica
Seether (their heavy songs like Because of Me and stuff definately make them count)
Breaking Benjamin
Megadeath
Pantera
some Powerman 5000
Godsmack
some Korn
Dir en Grey

Black Metal is a bit of an acquired taste, but here are some albums you need to pick up:
80's-- Mercyful Fate- Melissa & Don't Break The Oath (These aren't black metal per se, but since you have lots of melodic/power oriented bands in 'yer list, you'd like them a lot. If you can get over King Diamond's grating falsetto.)
Bathory- (This band has two periods as you know, more evil tremelo picked material with shoddy production, and their more polished and refined sound with Viking and Norse Mythology with elements of acoustic and Scandinavian Folk) Several Albums are worth it: Bathory (s/t), The Return, Under The Sign of The Black Mark, Blood Fire Death, and Hammerheart.
Celtic Frost- Morbid Tales EP, To Mega Therion.
Hellhammer- (optional, more of a historic footnote) Apocalyptic Raids EP
As for the 90's Norwegian Stuff: Darkthrone- Transilvanian Hunger, A Blaze In The Northern Sky, Under A Funeral Moon. Immortal- Pure Holocaust Emperor- In The Nightside Eclipse Mayhem- Live In Leipzig, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.
That should get you started off nicely dude, then from there you can figure out if you prefer Symphonic and Melodic Black Metal, or the abrasive, raw bands.

Older Megadeth and Metallica are classified as thrash metal.
Thrash is the classic metal of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest sped up. It features fast double bass drumming, technical riffing, and fast but concise soloing. The vocals are usually a rough shout, but they can be more operatic. Thrash features rythmic guitar picking, (i.e the chugga-chugga riffs and rhythms.)
To the uninitiated the abundance of subgenres can seem, well unwieldy and stupid. Each of the subgenres have their own unique sounds.
Since I'm too lazy to describe each genre unto itself, just go to Wikipedia and type in what genre you want to know about. Their pages are pretty comprehensive but it would give you a clear answer as to what 'defines' the sound of a certain subgenre.

All Megadeth is great, especially the remasters, cleaned up with proper production these albums really shine and IMO kick the crap out of every Metallica album barring Master of Puppets, that is still the best Thrash album and best Metallica album to date. As for Metallica everything from the Black album on just sucks, it's not thrash by any means, it's what I like to refer to as Pop Metal.

If you like these bands, then I suggest picking up some "Kamelot" albums, you wont find a better vocalist than Kahn and Casey Grillo is the best drummer out there right now. As for what albums I would recommend, their first two albums (both Kahn and Casey were not on the first two albums) are good but pretty generic, but after that it's all good and just gets better and better, the order I would go....
The Black Halo (One of the top 5 metal albums of all time).
Ghost Opera (latest album and currently touring the US in support of it).
The Fourth Legacy
Karma
Epica
I just saw Kamelot in concert last Saturday night, awesome, best live band I have ever seen....PERIOD.

If you ever get the opportunity to see them live, JUST DO IT. They are even better live then their studio albums.
Now if Edguy and Sonata arctica put on as good of a live show when I see them both next month I will be a very happy person.

So did anyone else here buy Slayer's "Christ Illusion"? And if so, what did you think of it?

I personally thought it was one Slayer's best. Ranks up there with "Reign In Blood" in my opinion. Not above it, of course, but maybe below it. From what I've heard, their recent albums were more "nu-metallish" (I'm just getting into Slayer, I've listened to everything from Reign In Blood and all the stuff before it), so yeah this here is a darn good trash metal album.

I've recently fallen in love with "Stratovarius", rekindling my interest in Power Metal (I've been on a big Megadeth binge recently).

So....awesome.
Time to go buy up some albums!
