Rate Godzilla 1985, scale of 1-10
Yeah I'm kinda ripping Eternal Mothra's poll idea here... 10 being the best, and 1 being the worst.
The movie that ushered in a new era, and returned Godzilla back to his roots. Also brought back Raymond Burr for another performance of his semi-famous character, Steve Martin.
This is one of my favorite Godzilla movies, and is the one movie that got me into this genre. I loved the effects, which were top notch for their time and still hold up for the most part to this day. The mood and approach was awesome, IMHO, and very stirring.
So what do you think?
Gonna post the poll portion after class. e_e

Re: Rate Godzilla 1985, scale of 1-10
HOkay.
Depends on the version you mean.
The Retturn of Godzilla? Easily a 10, for me. Raw dread of a powerful force that seems to have returned from the grave. NO cheesy monster-on-monster violence, and the big guy looked awesome.
Godzilla 1985. In spite of some slicing and dicing, I still give this a 9. I never get tired of watching it.

I give G84 about an 8. Good movie, but unlike it's superior follow-up, it does seem rather dated.

Re: Rate Godzilla 1985, scale of 1-10
A 10 for either version, for reasons already stated and more. This is also my favorite film from the Heisei series as well. To me, this is the definitive Godzilla and the version that most often comes to mind for me. That plus this was also one of the few times that the big G actually seemed scary. The powerful hate filled glare mixed with those gorgeous anamatronic snarls with Otani's dark and menacing music playing in the background while the walking juggernaut laid waste to all before him equals kaiju eiga perfection in my book.

Just a small correction, Ko Otani (assuming that's the 'Otani' you're talking about) did not compose the music for this movie. G84's composer was Reijiro Koroku.

9 for G84
7 for G85
Both are great, for reasons stated, but like Gojira, the Japanese Version is better.

Re: Rate Godzilla 1985, scale of 1-10
Anyways, I like this movie, it has a powerful musical score and the final scene with Goji falling into Mt. Mihara is pretty powerful. I give it an 8/10.

Had to go with a 9.
One of my favorites, probably 2nd or 3rd favorite suit, overall great movie, but in my opinion, not enough Godzilla in the film.

Re: Rate Godzilla 1985, scale of 1-10
I give it a 9. A very well done movie. While Bio has a little better effects (and even then, G84 still did better with the camear angles and facial expressions), this had a much better score and better acting. (Man, when you watch the japanese verison, you realise how bad the Saradian agent and boss are at acting, with the boss saying such lines as "The America" when its suppsoed to be Americans and "Make sure that the Japan does not make anymore of it" and the agent saying "D---, its godzilla!", in a very irrating way.)

I thought this movie was somewhat boring, the death at the end was powerful, but the overall first half the movie put me to sleep.

Re: Rate Godzilla 1985, scale of 1-10
The Japanese version gets an 8. It is one of THE best Godzilla movies of all time. I didn't find it as good as Gojira or Destroyah though, so it got an 8. If I owned it, I would watch it all the time though. The American version... that thing gets a nice little 5.

The American version could have done better. The only thing I like is the Dr. Pepper scene (cause I love Dr. Pepper lol) and Steve Martin. I also love the musical score.

I thought Godzilla's rampage was nicely done, and Toho tried to put in some horror with the shipwrecked guys, and that Shockeris, or whatever it was called.

Yeah, Goji's destruction scenes were pretty scary. They did a good job with that.

The Japanese version gets about an 8, while the U.S. version probably gets a 6 and that's probably mostly due to nostalgia.

10 for me.
The music was amazing, the action scenes were great. If the entire Heisei series had been on this level, where it was treated with this...I dont know how to say it...size, I guess, then it would have been amazing. Sadly, right after the fantastic Biollante, they started to go down hill with a vengence.
