1/5 of America believes the Sun goes around the Earth.
The people who know me on KG know I am very much anti-Creationist. What they don't probably get, is *why* I hate Creationism, Fundamentalism, and all this religiosity that we are contending with now. You wanna see the type of people I deal with in my church? People who hold to a form of knowledge but deny its power? (cookies if you get this reference):
Feast your eyes on the invulnerable ignorance of your average American:

Edit-Warning, some of the titles contain foul language. If you're the squeamish type when it comes to this, don't read.

Re: 1/5 of America believes the Sun goes around the Earth.
Problem is: The ones whose genepool needs cleaning are usually the ones with the guns. Then, we put these numskulls into public schools, where they hate it, don't understand it, cheat to get through it, and quite plain and simply drag down this country. I would like to see *real science* taught, but unfortunately, with 1/5 of people still clinging to Ptolemy..........
It would do the world a favor if the Gods killed us all.

Yknow, I'd seen this article a few days ago, but I didn't believe it. But apparently, the New York Times had pretty much the same article published a year ago.
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/30/sc...30profile.html?
I honestly don't know what to say.

Re: 1/5 of America believes the Sun goes around the Earth.
If you're too ignorant to know that:
the sun is the center of the solar system
the Earth orbits it from a distance of about ninety three million miles
it takes the sun's light about eight minutes to reach us
the Earth's spin is what makes the sun appear to move across the sky
the Earth is tilted on its axis
because of this tilt, seasons change because the Earth's position in its orbit lets the sun shine more or less intensely on a given hemisphere(ie winter is when our hemisphere is tilted away from the sun and summer is when it is tilted more towards it)
the Earth rotates once in about twenty four hours
the Earth takes about three hundred and sixty five days to make one trip around the sun
our solar system is located about two thirds the distance between the center of the milky way and the outer rim
...then you need to go read some elementary school books and fix your ignorance.

So you hate Creationism because of the idiots who worship it? Why not hate the followers instead of the concept? It's like bashing guns. The weapons aren't the problem, it's the people pulling the trigger.
I won't disagree with the article. It's funny and sad at the same time. All you can do is focus on improving yourself. While you're at it, you might want to start praying your life goes and ends well.

Re: 1/5 of America believes the Sun goes around the Earth.
I'd believe that figure. I mean, less that half of us believe in evolution in any form.
Not just Americans. The entire world's genepool needs great clensing, about 73.2% of the world's current population by my last calculations. Not that it really matters, Heaven is for a perfect society, not Earth. Still, Eugenics without the racist biases it's been plauged with is a compelling concept to all intelligence-lovers. >.>
However it would never be viable. Regardless of genepools, DNA does faulter every once in a while no matter how remarkable it is. Mistakes would still be made with future births no matter how perfect some transient society is made, unless all human creations and the sun are removed from our lives carcinogens will still alter DNA and screw up the genepool. And even without human carcinogens and UV radiation there are still other natural carcinogens we cannot get rid of. And even if we did, the variation in DNA caused by mutations is what allows all species to continue to survive, so that means that variation in DNA being surpressed would mean th end of the human race. Therefore, the creation of a perfect genepool is nigh impossible. >.>

Re: 1/5 of America believes the Sun goes around the Earth.
Honestly, this is an atrocity, but it doesn't suprise me in the least. There are actually a good number of people I've seen who don't even know how many moons the Earth has. Yes, that's right, there are people who are too dumb to look up at the sky and see that there is only a single moon orbiting the Earth.

Re: 1/5 of America believes the Sun goes around the Earth.
The figures are Anti-American slander. You learn in advertising how to pull the wool over peoples eyes and make them believe something with the # out of # trick.
To get a 1 out of 5 Americans and be literally correct in that statement you would have to interview every American, and I never got asked. But figuritvly that statement is correct, if you want to think that's significant at all. (It isn't)
You can ask 100 dentist which toothpaste they recommend. 91 say they choose Crest and 9 choose Colgate. Now the Colgate company can go out and say 9 out of 10 Dentist choose Colgate over the leading brands. But the figures they dont tell you about is Crest is the bomb poo poo diggity in the eyes of people who take care of teeth.
If you want to follow what t3h internets and "I'm ashamed to be American" culture tells you, then check out our test scores:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/24/ed...8fc2bb&ei=5070
If you actually listen to actual statistics and not bullspit biased ones then maybe your guys' "America R Stupid" has a case.
Apparently, this thread does not have that case. Looks like blind bandwagon jumping from here.

I have to agree with Behemoth here... How the FLYING **** did they conduct this poll or this research? Seriously here, you should question such things before flying off the handle.

I think people anticipate hating America by immediately choosing to believe this garbage.
The Bush administration screwing up and the utter pure hatred for it is causing America's declining reputation.
Our president is a man alot, a-freaking-lot, of people love to hate. And this disgusts me.

We've got every right to hate the *******. It's one of those things garunteed in our wunderbar constitution. I might also say, that in the Constitution, it happens to define what a "Patriot" was in the eyes of our Founding Fathers:
A patriot is a man who institutes the new government, by tearing down the old, when the old no longer works.
....though, Winston Churchill did make, quite possibly the greatest argument against democracy since..well, America itself became what it is today.
And that argument is:
The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.

Statistics show 67% (something within that range) of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed. That must mean 67% of Americans are unhappy with the fact that we have religious freedom and freedom of the press. 67% of Americans must be unhappy that we live in a country where 70% of the citizens own houses. We must be unhappy with the fact that if we get in a car crash, an ambulance will take us to an emergency room. We must be unhappy that if a robber comes in and trys to steal one of our flatscreen TVs, that a Policeman will show up and try to stop that thief. We must be unhappy that 90% of all teens have access to cell phones and laptops. We must be unhappy that if our expensive houses catch flame, that a team of firemen will try their best to put it out. My pastor put out a nice label for those unhappy people: the biggest nation of spoiled brats on the planet.
|
Mind telling me how much religious freedom the Atheists, Pagans and Muslims, Buddhists, and Jews have in this country? I'll tell you, PH, a damn sight less than the Christians. As for the wealth of this nation, many people with some sense are unhappy that 3% of Earth's population (AKA the USA) use 25% of the entire Planet's resources. We are not spoiled brats, per se, no we are the biggest, most dangerous bunch of gluttons on the planet. The nations we see as a threat to our national security we outspend so much it isn't even funny. We possess more nuclear weapons than any other nation on the globe. As for your Baptist Pastor, would he give equal rights to those his religion disagrees with? HELL NO! He'd ***** and moan about the Baptist view that the 3v1l *****s and abortionists (and let's not forget the vile, vile pagan Catholics) brought 9/11 and are going to end the world. So DON'T tell me that we have equal rights for all. When a nation of gluttons that can destroy the world thousands of times over feels threatened by some nation like IRAN and NORTH KOREA.....
God forbid that America should ever have risen to power over the rest of the world. We are so headed to World War III. (And that's thanks to our "Born-Again" President.)

Re: 1/5 of America believes the Sun goes around the Earth.
It's interesting but he made a very unscientific proclamation without quoting any sources. It does urk me that people would deny such proven theories as a heliocentric solar system but there is always a high percent of "commoners" in every society. I don't know if I can fully trust this bloggers little spiel unless I see where he got these numbers from.

ATTENTION: 56% of the French believe the sun orbits the Earth
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhlERjW0bhw
Thus, French people are stupid.
(or maybe all nations have idiots)
Fake edit: There is no way that audience was being serious. They must of been screwing with him.
Real edit: 2% of the audience thinks Mars orbits the Earth

Well, this thread became a crappy derail just as I was expecting.
At least I proved that it is retarded to believe the "1/5 of American thinking the sun revolves around the Earth" statistic. Does everyone understand why the figure is BS so I can ditch this thread?

Actually, this "innocent" little item spawned several topics (in General Chat) some folks might wish to continue with. Sometimes "derailing" can be "interesting" rather than just a train wreck.
