You might have seen these before, but as for examples of scales....

Be carful not to try to draw every single one, the drawing will be come very busy,
http://www3.sympatico.ca/tcode/Zillabig.jpg
http://www3.sympatico.ca/tcode/ZillaBlast2.jpg

here are two examples, note in the larger "g" the scales are only defined in high density areas, or in shadow zones. As a general and very flexible rule I put bumpy scale lines in areas where I would draw muscle definition on a smooth body.

often a cluster of three or more scales in an area will suggest that there are scales all over the body.
Just to let you know the first example is in reality a bit large (18 inches by 24 inches), which allows for more definition detail, but the same technique was applied to the second example at a regular paper (8.5 x 11 inches) size.
I hope I helped.

If you really want to learn how to draw, start with something other than monsters.

Yes, I know that's blasphemous. But it all relates. Start with normal people and animals, get one of those small sketchbooks and carry it around with you everywhere. The thing is there's no "right" way to do it, and honestly, there's very few people out there with inborn "talent." I'm of the firm belief that it's a skill anyone can develop, you just have to keep practicing.

I'm serious, draw the same stuff over, and over, and over, and over again until it becomes second nature. I have books and books filled with just women's faces, or arms, or gesture figures, etc.

Here's a few of my pieces:
