<font color='#FF7F00'>Never saw it. It will be interesting when I buy it this summer when it is released.
I heard it also had a giant bird in the movie. Does anyone remember it?

<font color='#FF7F00'>you have not heard the news?
Retromedia will be releasing it on DVD this June.
RM was the ones who recently put Gamera vs. Jiger out of DVD.
Now, RM will be releasing The Magic Serpent on double feature with Gamera vs. Gyaos.

<font color='#000F22'>I have the movie and I could make screencaps of all four monsters if anybody wants me to. The giant eagle looks pretty similar to the condor thing in Ebirah, Horror of the Deep and the giant spider actually doesn't resemble Kumonga that much. Looks a bit like Shelob if memory serves.
And here's a Bad Movie Report review with pictures of Froggo (Ikazukimaru) and Draggo (Orochimaru).
http://www.stomptokyo.com/badmoviere...icserpent.html
I've seen the movie and it's quite cool, though the plot and setting is vaguely similar to Daimajin, the film is very different with a more wild and fantasy oriented feel, quite like a Shaw Brothers movie with tons of zany ninja warfare using magic and finally a pretty incredible kaiju showdown at the end.
I have the original Japanese version in letterbox format and one thing I find interesting is that the voices of Froggo and Draggo are totally different in the Japanese version, in the US version they are given the roars of Rodan and Godzilla!

Magic Serpent queston....
Since this was based on an old Japanese fairy tale/myth, has it ever been adapted to the screen for other movies?

The Magic Serpent - Ash's review
Got this little gem of kung-fu cheese upon purchasing the Gamera vs. Gyaos/Magic Serpent 2 movie disc. I knew what I was getting myself into with a Showa Gamera movie... but I had not one fraggin' clue as to what I should expect from Magic Serpent.
This... is the result.
- The Magic Serpent------
- Hilarious, Hardcore Porn sounding title aside (:P), this is classic 60's/70's kung-fu/chop socky/samurai cheesy goodness!! ^^ Everything you'd expect to happen in a crazy kung-fu chop-em-up happens here... with the added plus of having kaiju in it. Though it doesn't revolve around them, it does have quite a few giant monsters here and there Mainly at the beginning and the end.
I'm talkin classic Japanese sounds, classic FX, ninjas, hilarious hero's death excemption (in the most obscure of ways EVER), and guys on strings. I'm talking classic concepts here man... ninjas appearing out of NOWHERE, even from out of the ground and the water, flying samurais, (or in one case, a flying head) magic abound, men riding clouds, long-winded death speeches, wise old ladies who give away magical items, ninja magic, and just pure fun and entertainment. You'd be better off not taking this movie seriously... AT ALL. It's for the better... really... just soak in the pure b-movie magic.
The ending is really where the daikaiju come in. Like Daimajin... no real appearances by the big beasties till the end. But unlike Daimajin, which tries to take itself extremely seriously... this movie, Magic Serpent, obviously doesn't. All seriousness is thrown out the window along with common sense and disbelief. Though there will be some who can spot similarities between this movie's story and the stories of some of the Daimajin movies. But I guess it's the only real way that kaiju and samurais can be mixed. *
Hilarious thing to note... the monsters in this have obviously gotten their roars from the Toho Libraries, as the big dragon roars like Godzilla, the toad dinosaur roars like Rodan, and the big-*** spider screams like... I think Mothra... but I don't remember. All smashing it out amidst a Fuedal Japanese palace. Sounded like I was hearing Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra all slugging it out with each other when I closed my eyes.
So overall? Not too shabby of a movie. Classic B-Movie Kung Fu/Samurai hijinks, just that this time they got giant monsters added in too. One day, I swear I'm going to make a US-history movie exactly the way the Japanese exaggerate with their history. The American Revolution was a pretty amazing event... but imagine how much more cooler would it be if... say... the Americans threw magical fireballs and the British had ebil death rays to shoot out of their eyes!!! All this while General Washington battled British Commander Henry Clinton with samurai swords, while leaping into the air like ninjas on steroids!!!! One day I shall...
*- well unless you want to crank it up to 11 and make Orochi: the Eight Headed Dragon, another movie that refuses to let common sense and seriousness confine it, but goes to such depths of hilarity that even the Magic Serpent would love to reach. Cause this movie even has giant samurai sentai robots!!!!

Re: The Magic Serpent - Ash's review
The Magic serpent is a very fun film, mixing the whimsical Japanese myths together and the four monster are very nice, though defiantly cheesy compared to other kaiju. Still I think I like Ikazuki Maru's frog monster form, know as Froggo, the most of the four. SuperXAsh, is the DVD version of the film in widescreen of fullscreen? Because a small time video company called Matinee Classics released a VHS of the AIP version in widescreen back in 1999 and I hopping Retromedia got hold of that particular print. Anyway, thanks for bringing the film up!

Re: The Magic Serpent - Ash's review
Unfortunately, both films on the DVD are in full-screen, but I do agree that as long as you don't try to take it too seriously, "The Magic Serpent" is a fun, goofy romp that never fails to entertain. The Toho kaiju roars got annoying after awhile, though, I have to admit.
And by the way, SuperXAsh, it's the giant bird at the beginning that sounds like Mothra. I don't remember the spider making any kind of noise, but I could be wrong there.

Re: The Magic Serpent - Ash's review
Hee hee. I agree with this review! "The Magic Serpent" is so goofy, it's funny! I like the Dinosaur Toad (as it's called on the back of the DVD Box) the best of the four creatures.
Also, when you make that movie about the Revolution, make sure there's at least one group of guys riding around on giant lizards with explosive crossbows.

Yeah, throw some snarling beastmen in their for good measure, I KNOW! The British use Gorgo and the Americans use King Kong! I think Washington should have Jedi mind powers ok I'll stop before I become a total spammer, OT, where can I find pics of the Kaiju in the movie? Or their stats?

Re: The Magic Serpent - Ash's review
Ha! It's a good thing I looked here, because I just got it today and was about to write a review on Gamera vs Gyaos/ Magic Serpent. I must say that that was one of the WOREST films I've everseen in my entire life!!! It was so bad, in fact, I couldn't even bring myself to finish it! I had high hopes.... I knew I should've spent the extra three dallors and got the one with Gappa! I fast forewarded the film toward the end, mostly just to see what other Godzilla kaiju sound effects they tossed in there, and although the final battle was interesting to say the most, it was a LONG way off from redeeming this movie from.... its self! I'll never pop that movie in again... And this is coming from me!A lover of kaiju! One whom find enjoyment from poorly done films, like the Showa Gamera movies, Godzilla vs. Megalon and All Monsters Attack! I can hardly bring myself to call it a kaiju film.... what compeny made that film, anyway?
Gamera vs. Gyaos was fun though....

The Magic Serpent rules, what's your beef with it? Its one of the most original kaiju movies that's been made and its been ripped off countless times.
