Monster Hunter... Help!
I was wondering if any of you fellows might have some helpful answers for a hunter in need?
(Keep in mind that I don't have the internet connection for my PS2)
#1. I'm wearing Velociprey greaves and Genprey everything else. Depending on which scales I get first, I'll replace the V-Prey greaves with either Genprey of Cephalos ones. Is that good enough armor for a 4 Star Blademaster, or should I hold off until I've got the new greaves?
#2. Right now I am using the Vile Serpentblade. I'm trying to upgrade to the Great Serpentblade. I've got the Velocidrome claws, Med. Monster bones and plenty of money... but I have no idea where I can get a Light crystal. Is it something I get from a trade with the old man, or do I mine it? And if I mine it, in which zone? Is it hard to obtain?
#3. Does the Great Serpentblade have any special effects? Like poisin or something?
#4. What's the trick to killing the Gypceros? Has he got a soft spot anywhere? That fleshy tail, perhaps? Twice it's looked as though I'd killed him (He falls over, stops moving, and blood no longer gushes when I strike him), but each time he just gets back up. Is this a sign that he's close to death, or is he simply mocking me by playing dead? Also, he's got a nasty habit of fleeing to zones filled with Bullfango, or to zones where I can't set pitfall traps. Is there a good way to lure him to safe and solid ground, like area 2 on the map?
#5. In "Catch a Yian Kut-Ku", when is the best time to trap/tranq. bomb him? I know I'm supposed to get him when he's weak, but how weak? I don't want to whack him around too badly, seeing as I'll fail the mission if he dies.
#6. Would it be worth it to spend $30 on a net connection and keyboard? I've heard that Monster Hunter is more fun and a bit easier if you've got a few allies with you, and I would like to get a look at the internet-exclusive places/items/wyverns. (And, if it is worth it and I buy it... is there anyone here who'd be willing to team up with me? None of my friends have monster hunter or the net connection.)
Thanks in advanced for whatever helpful comments you may have!

Genprey has better defense so I'd go with it.

You can mine them in areas 7 and 11 of the swamp during carry-type quests (like quartz ore or sootstone).
You also have a low chance of carving them from a Gypceros. You can get another chance at it in the rewards section by breaking the crystal on its head during a fight (just bash it repeatedly on the noggin).
Wyvern Marrow and Rathalos Wings can be traded for them with the old man in the swamp zone.

Clear the Bullfango first before fighting him.
Head, tail, and body are all soft spots, his legs are heavily armored though.
Gypceros fakes his death, and the attack he does getting up hurts like a mother. If you're on a mission where killing him is the objective this should never fool you because you'll get the 'All Requested Monsters Slain' message when he really dies. If you don't get it he's faking.

When his ears go back and he starts limping. I forget the number of tranq bombs you're given but if you've got four a good trick is to tranq, set the trap under him when he's snoozing, then tranq him again.

I go by the handle Redshirt, if you ever happen to get the connection look me up.
And yes it is. The monsters are all a bit tougher online but it's a lot more fun going after them with a 4 man team than it is all alone (lets the wyvern try and eat someone else besides you )

Re: Monster Hunter... Help!
Thanks, Phish. I faught the Gypceros again (Making sure to clear out the Bullfango beforehand, as you advised) and beat him no problem. I got to use the pitfall traps on him as well, which helped loads. Now I'm left with two more missions: "Bring me eggs!" and "Attack of the Rathalos". My worst nightmares come alive... fighting the Rathalos and doing another infernal egg collecting mission... in the middle of the desert...

Re: Monster Hunter... Help!
Point of fact, you don't HAVE to complete every mission in a particular quest level to unlock the next. If you've got 'Attack of the Rathalos' up then doing that will unlock the next quest tier.

Re: Monster Hunter... Help!
That's good to hear, because I'd take that wyvern over another egg-collecting mission any day. I think I can take him... that is, if he'd hold still long enough. Blasted thing sure does love running away.
Also, about the lightcrystals... You said I can mine them during gathering quests... But are those the only kinds of quests that will give me lightcrystals? (I ask this because, right now, all the swamp quests I have are hunting ones.)

Re: Monster Hunter... Help!
Then in the mean time, I suppose I have a few Gypceros to slay.
Though my weapon remains the same, I have upgraded to full Ioprey armor. Having the extra defense is nice, but I still really want that Great Serpentblade. I'm still working on that Rathalos... He's alot tougher than the other wyvern's I've killed, and his tendency to fly away upon seeing me whittles away at both my patience and time. Any good tips on slaying the Rathalos?

Re: Monster Hunter... Help!
With only a serpentblade to fight him.. hmmm.
1.) Don't bother fighting fair. Use easier wyvern missions like the YKK to stock up on flash and smoke bombs. Also, make dung bombs. Those'll let you clear him out of 9 as long as you throw one before he notices you.
2.) Always paint him.
3.) Traps and bombs. Bring one pitfall trap, 2 trap tools, 2 nets. Get combo books if you can to improve the odds of getting a trap. Bring a full load of large barrel bombs, as well as enough large barrels and gunpowder to make sure you can plant two then detonate with a small barrel bomb for each trap (so 3 GP, 3 large barrels, 3 large barrel bombs, 3 small barrel bombs).
4.) You might want to try upgrading your armor again, Kut-ku's a good choice and adds a bit of fire resistance. Don't use gypceros armor though since, while it has better defense, it's not that much more and you'll go up like a match if he tags you with a fireball.
Other than that the only advice I can give you is to learn his patterns, both in fleeing and in attacking.
For instance, if he turns toward you quickly it means he's going to charge. If he does a slow turn that means either he's going to shoot off a fireball or try and jump on top of you. When he flys into the air, the safest place to be is directly under him. That'll keep you safe from aerial fireballs and talon strikes. If you see him rear back on the ground either roll to the side immediately or block since that's a warning sign of an impending fireball as he tries to get some distance from you.
If you drop him in a trap immediately run in, set two large barrelbombs one on top of the other, set a small barrel bomb and roll clear. Once they go off, charge in and start smacking him with your sword.
If you get him to start limping that means he's always going to run to first 4, then 5. If you run directly to 5 you might have time to clear the vprey out before he gets there. If you do (or even fi you don't) when you see his shadow appear as he comes in for a landing, plant a trap there. He'll fall in and you can smash away. An alternate strategy would be to bring some extra barrel bombs, let him land in 5 and go to sleep. Then go in, take out the vprey set two large barrels next to him and set them off. Monsters take triple damage while asleep so you can get one really good blow in.

Re: Monster Hunter... Help!
Alright, thanks for the info.
I had really wanted to not get Kut-Ku armor, but if it'll help me beat the Rathalos, I guess I can bear running around in pink armor for a bit. Also... is the Vile Serpentblade really that bad?
On a bit of a side note... Expensive as it can be, I know it's a good idea to experiment with different weapons. Since I might not be getting the Great Serpentblade any time soon, are there any other weapons you'd suggest? What upgrade paths should I use with them to get a superior weapon? I'd like to have something that has a special ability, if that's possible. (Poisin or Sleep would be great, but I think I'd be happy with anything that can kill a wyvern.)

Re: Monster Hunter... Help!
Not for you it isn't, it just seems that way to me because I've been spoiled by stuff like the Red Dragon Sword (960 damage + dragon element) is all
Hmm.. I'm rather fond of lances and hammers myself. Lances can block just about anything and the hammers are some of the highest damage weapons around.

Re: Monster Hunter... Help!
Yeah, I used to have a Great Bone Club. It did more damage, but wore down so quickly that it was almost useless in battle, which is why I gave the Agito(Sold it, since I didn't have everything I needed for one of it's upgrades) and Serpentblade a try. Just recently I got the option of getting a weapon called a Cyclo-Hammer. Would it be worth it?
And, speaking of things being worth it, is it worth it to get the keyboard? I found out that it cost more than I had been told, and I don't want to spend the extra money if I don't have to. Is there any way you can communicate without it, or is it essential to Monster Hunter net play?
-edit-
Okay... I've got Kut-Ku Mail, a Cyclo-Hammer+, and a Long Tusk now. I'm working on more Kut-Ku armor and an Atlas Hammer. I'd like to get that Skull Lance (I forget it's other name), but that's impossible since I havn't killed or even seen a Monoblos yet. I'll get the Great Serpentblade only if I'm lucky enough to nab a light crystal.

Re: Monster Hunter... Help!
Not quickly. You can access a 'soft keyboard' using the controller, but you have to click through and hit each letter individually so you won't be telling anyone anything fast.

Which I learned the hard way.
I got the net connection and played with some people, I'm up to HP 4 BoneDuster and got some useful stuff pretty quickly. I even managed to nab two shells from a Basarios.
My name on there is DINOHUNTER2, and I usually hang out in Blue Land, area A. I look forward to seeing you online.

Re: Monster Hunter... Help!
Level 7 Mercenary now!
OK, I've got 3 lightcrystal now, so I've got the Great Serpentblade. It's nice, but I feel a bit outdated as I compare it to the uber-powerful Rathalos, Diablos and Kirin crafted weapons other net-users have. Which simple sword can I upgrade into something like that?
Also... I sold the lance, but I kept that Cyclo-Hammer. I've upgraded it alot, and now it's a Kut-Ku Chin. To upgrade it into the even more powerful Kut-Ku Jaw I'm going to need a... Mega Demon Drug? What on earth is that, and how do I get it?

Monster Hunter 2
To those who are fans of Capcom's wyvern-fighting Monster Hunter, you'll be pleased to find out that Capcom has a sequel in the works. It's part of the Tokyo Game Show(Sept. 16-18), so we'll probably be seeing alot more about it soon. The game is said to, of course, feature new lands, monsters, and weapons. Offline play will be better, though Online play is still the game's focus. Time will progress in this game, as well. Depending on whether it's day or night, people will say different things, and different sorts of monsters will be seen lurking about. From what I've seen, the graphics have been improved; some of the backgrounds look amazing. New creatures(that I've seen!) include mandrill like apes that reside in a snowy region, a black dragon(though not Fatalis), a massive crustacean found on the beach, and some sort of black wyvern with a long head and eyes that glow orange. Rathalos, Rathian, Cephalos, Yian Kut-Ku, Diablos, Monoblos, Plesioth, and Aptonoths all seem to be coming back as well. I didn't see a ton of new weapons, though I did notice a Great Sword made from that custacean and a bow and arrow that fires three arrows at once. It seems to be shaping up quite nicely. Check out GameSpot for some new info, including gameplay movies.

Who here plays Monster Hunter online? I know phish and dino do already, and my online name is Ravager19. With one more member, we could have an all KP hunting party...

I'd love to play, but unfortunately I'm currently loaning my copy to a friend. I am looking forward to MH2 though.. and wrestling with whether or not to import now that I can play JP games.

Re: Monster Hunter
Yeah, I can't wait until MH2 comes out here. I think capcom is waiting to see how well Monster Hunter: Freedom will do before they release it. Of course, it's not helping their cause that they almost entirely cut out online play from it...ad hoc just isn't the same. Also not helping is the bad reviews it's receiving from major gaming publications (I'm looking at you, Game Informer). I think they played about ten minutes worth of beginner quests and wrote it off as crap.

Yeah... Gamespot does the same thing. But a lot of MH fans have learned by now not to listen to reviews like that, so hopefully it won't discourage too many people. I hear MHF has been selling pretty well.
