Now this truly is a wonderful book packed with both a ton of interesting information and a load of high quality full color pictures to accompany it that covers all Godzilla films from the past five decades. Opening with the Heisei series and Godzilla 1984, each film is presented in the set format of having a brief profile of the Godzilla type used (1 page), profiles of the other featured kaiju and the movie plot outline (2 pages), pictures of main scenes from the movie (2 pages) and then some photographs from behind the scenes or movie production (between 2 or 3 pages) to finish. Unless you can read Japanese then you will of course miss out on most of the text but the pictures more than make up for it. There are over 200 full color pictures for the Heisei series alone!
For an interval we get a look at Godzilla 1998 and the animated series that followed it, the book features some excellent pictures of the beasts from the cartoon but the lack of full kaiju statistics is a small let down, not that many more follow it. We then resume with the Showa series from Godzilla 1954 to the Terror of MechaGodzilla 1975 again set in the same format as before and again with a ton of pictures and information. In fact there seems to be twice as much content in the Showa series than in the Heisei series.
The book then goes on to show how complete it really is by showing guest appearances by Godzilla, King Ghidorah and Gigan on the Zone Fighter television series and some information on the short lived Monster Planet of Godzilla show too. Here we get to see a selection of great pictures of both the exciting battle scenes and show production, shots which have yet to be seen anywhere else so it becomes a real treat for the fans. If that was still not enough then we get a look at kaiju used exclusively in Godzilla video games such as Godzilla Generations on the Sega Dreamcast, Godzilla Trading Battle on Sony Playstation and Super Godzilla on the Super Nintendo.
Following that is a brief look at some other small time Godzilla television shows aired in Japan such as Godzilla Adventure Land between 1992 and 1993 and Godzilla Kingdom from 1996 to 1997 before focusing more on the Godzilla Island series and introducing some of the new kaiju that made their debut within. How does Super Special Space Godzilla High Grade Type Two (his full name), Hyper Mecha King Ghidorah and medical and fire fighter versions of Jet Jaguar wet the appetite? The book even examines some episodes and kaiju in more detail with stories based around new creations such as Neo Hedorah, Shadow Godzilla and even a brief comeback from Dogora too!
The very last section of this massive book is aptly named The Perfect Godzilla Guide because that is exactly what it is. Starting with height comparisons of various versions of Godzilla over the years, we next move on to a look at his biological makeup and unique abilities, different strategies we humans have used in a bid to rid ourselves of kaiju, the weapons and vehicles we have used to help us, aliens who have attempted to conquer the earth in the Godzilla universe, kaiju islands around the coast of Japan, credits for all Godzilla films featured in the book, episode guides to the Godzilla cartoon and Godzilla Island series and finally last but not least, alternative foreign titles to Godzilla films.
A definitive guide to everything and anything Godzilla related, a dream to every kaiju fan.
