Title:    "And the Sea Spewed Death"

Reviewer:    Peter B. Hull

Following a brief recap of the events in the last issue, we see Gorgo and Ogra swimming in the ocean. Still licking her wounds from the battle with the other monster, Ogra rests while Gorgo gathers seaweed and catches fish for her.

Meanwhile, on the surface, Professor Stoddard has returned. As he is conversing with one of his new companions, Dr. Hunt, when a seaplane lands nearby. The pilot requests Stoddard to accompany him to the mainland where a conference between military people and scientists is taking place.

Upon arriving, he is introduced to a General Canfield, who asks him to work with the military to help find and destroy the Gorgos. Stoddard argues at first, but changes his mind, saying "I have been allowing my scientific zeal to outpace my common sense."

During the meeting, Canfield mentions a theory that Gorgo is from lost Atlantis. Stoddard says Atlantis existed, but has nothing to do with Gorgo. The meeting ends with the professor reiterating his promise to help find Gorgo for the military to destroy.

As Stoddard rejoins his boat, we see Ogra and Gorgo swimming at the ocean's bottom. They rest near a rock without noticing that Gorgo is blocking a cave with his body. The cave leads to a huge chamber beneath the ocean floor where lost Atlantis exists.

The Atlanteans are twelve feet tall, with yellow scaly fishlike skin and forked serpentine tongues. They communicate by thought transference. As we look in on them, we see them planning an invasion of the world's land area. The consensus is that their mental abilities and weapons will make the conquest of humanity easy.

The Atlantean army begins moving into the cave. But they find the exit blocked by a huge, scaly body, which they shoot with their atomic sidearms. Gorgo's roar of pain awakens Ogra, and the two monsters begin swatting at the Atlanteans. Seeing their rays are ineffective against the beasts, the Atlanteans unleash the giant crabs they have bred for protection. The crabs are nearly Gorgo's size, and there are five of them. The Atlanteans join in the attack with their ray guns.

The battle lasts for a few minutes, but Gorgo and Ogra destroy the crabs. The surviving Atlanteans retreat into the cave, but the monsters have been worked up into a fighting frenzy. They tear at the cave opening, tunneling into the rock and breaking through to the inner world of Atlantis.

There, the angry beasts indulge in some good, old-fashioned city smashing, kaiju-style. By the time they are done, Atlantis is no longer a menace.

Noticing the turmoil below, Stoddard figures the Gorgos have something to do with it. He takes a depth submarine down to check things out. He can see the ocean floor has been torn up, but sees no sign of the creatures, who are sleeping in the undersea chamber that was once Atlantis. Stoddard gives up, concluding It was a natural disturbance such as an ocean quake. When he informs Canfield of this, the general tells him jokingly, "Keep searching. Who knows? Perhaps you might find lost Atlantis. Ha, ha, ha!"
