Title:    "Menace from the Sea"

Reviewer:    Peter B. Hull

This issue is a departure from the science fiction themes of the previous two issues, opting instead for a cold war theme, which reflects the era it was published in. It opens with atomic test explosions while explaining that "the communist powers had broken their promise [not to engage in atomic testing] and the free-world nations had no recourse but to follow."

Some test explosions at sea disturb the sleep of Ogra and Gorgo. Moving away from the disturbance, they swim north. They are heading in the general direction of a secret communist base, located on a deserted island in the North Atlantic. This base is to be the focus for a submarine attack on the USA. They have their entire atomic submarine fleet stashed there.

During a meeting of the communist high command, we see a man who looks very much like Nikita Kruschev discussing plans for the invasion. He reads from a message sent from the island, reporting that the subs are ready. He says the attack will be successful because America won't be expecting an attack from the sea. "This flag," he gloats while pointing at the hammer and sickle, "will soon fly over the whole world."

In Australia, we are introduced to Clyde "Chips" Ainsley, a pilot with a reputation for telling tall tales. He is negotiating about a job flying cargo, although what or where is never made clear.

Meanwhile, a fishing schooner, blown off course by a gale which is part of an oncoming hurricane, passes nearby the hidden island. Looking through his binoculars, the captain sees the submarines. He knows he has found something big and figures he can sell the information to any of the allied powers for big money. Barely has the boat begun moving away from the scene, however, than three soviet bombers fly overhead, firing on the boat and reducing it to a few pieces of wooden debris.

Ogra and Gorgo are swimming nearby. The disturbance attracts them to the surface, where they see nothing but the approaching hurricane. They frolic for awhile, then dive below again. Hungry, they prey on giant squid and whales.

Chips' plane has also been blown off course by the hurricane. He too passes over the island and spots the secret base. His radio is dead, so he can't call for help or pass on the info to anyone. The Soviets spot him on their radar and prepare to shoot him down. But the hurricane does their work for them as his plane crashes at sea.

Splashing about in the storm-tossed sea, Chips spies a small island and swims for it. He climbs up on it and collapses, exhausted. After resting a moment, he notices the surface looks and feels more like scaly skin. About that time, Ogra rears her head out of the water in front of him. Then, his island raises up out of the water, and he realizes he is sitting on Gorgo's head.

The creatures swim away from the hurricane, with Chips riding on Gorgo's head and praying. Presently a seaplane passes overhead. The monsters sink below the surface as it lands, then dive, leaving Chips to swim to the plane.

When he reaches the American mainland, Chips finds a very skeptical reception to his story, especially after the unnamed general he is talking to receives a telegram about his reputation. In the end, they agree to look into it, but the general warns Chips, "If this is the hoax I'm sure it is, I'll clap you into a military jail and throw away the key."

Meanwhile, the order to strike has been given, and the armada of atomic submarines is on the move. Only one of the subs has a human crew, the rest being robotically powered. Their vibrations are picked up by the sensitive ears of Gorgo and Ogra. Curious, the creatures swim up to meet the fleet head on.

Seeing the creatures in their way, and saying that scattering the formation to go around them would cause loss of control of the robots, the crew of the command sub directs the leading subs to fire torpedoes at the creatures. Of course, this only angers the kaiju and they return the fleet's attack, "smash[ing] amongst the super subs like tigers in a chicken house."

The battle lasts for a few minutes, after which the mother sub withdraws the few robot subs that are left and flees back to base. But the Gorgos pursue them, surfacing from the bay. The defenders of the base open fire on them, but of course that only serves to enrage them further. The communists flee from them as they trample their cannons into the dirt. Then Ogra sinks her claws into the cliff behind the base and pulls tons of rock down, burying it completely. Once that is done, her and Gorgo turn back to the sea.

Three hours later, a squad of US planes passes over the base. The squad leader informs his commander that nothing is there but a pile of rocks. "What brand does that chap drink who gave you the information?" he asks.

At the issue's conclusion, we see Chips staring out from behind bars. "I swear I'll never tell a lie again," he says. "But what a fine bloody yarn it all would've made if it hadn't been true!"

So, for the second issue in a row, Ogra and Gorgo save the world from an invasion from the sea, and no one even knows. Talk about unsung heroes!
