Title:    "The Graveyard of Lost Ships"

Reviewer:    Peter B. Hull

This issue picks up where the last one left off, with Chips sitting in his cell receiving visits from friends who tell him he has outdone himself regarding tall tales. Among these friends are married couple Hal and Jan Dorsett. Hal is a movie camera buff who dreams of making nature films. He is also a diver. It is never made clear what he does for a living, but he apparently has quite a bit of money. This makes him a target for two con men named Pete Fraley and Monk Costa.

Fraley and Costa approach the Dorsetts with a map purporting to show the whereabouts of the Sargasso Sea. Dorsett says it does not exist because it's never been found. Pete replies that it's actually in the Arctic, not in the tropical areas that have been searched. (They all need a geography lesson; the real Sargasso Sea is right where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Atlantic!) This fictional place is a tropical spot in the middle of the Arctic, heated by underground springs. Ships are drawn by the pole's magnetism. They need him to finance outfitting their boat, the Shark, for the expedition. His skills as a diver will be needed to help find the treasure. And they point out to Dorsett the movie he can make. So he agrees to help, and Jan informs him she is going too.

Meanwhile, Gorgo and Ogra have discovered the very area the humans are seeking. They are swimming among the old wrecked ships, feeding. The land is covered with lush tropical growth and is inhabited by a tribe of former Eskimos who have adapted to a tropical lifestyle.

As the Shark is drawing near the area, its occupants see caribou wandering on the shore and decide to go ashore to stock up the food supply. When they are all on shore, Jan wanders away from the others and suddenly finds herself confronted by a polar bear. Just as she appears to be doomed, Gorgo surfaces and grabs the bear. The kaiju cub submerges into the sea with its catch.

When the others return, Pete and Monk are skeptical of Jan's story. Her husband believes her and points out how much her description tallies with Chips'. (Don't they watch or read the news? After what happened in the movie and earlier issues, you'd think Gorgo's existence wouldn't exactly be obscure!) As the Shark resumes her journey, no one on board knows Gorgo is shadowing them, returning to the warm waters and Mother. Pete and Monk are making their own plans to murder the Dorsetts as soon as they have located and retrieved the treasure.

Two days later, the Shark comes to a narrow gorge in the ice and makes its way through it. Passage is dangerous, with the boat scraping against the ice several times. But they make it through and find themselves floating on warm water surrounded by wrecked ships of all ages. As they gaze in wonder at the spectacle, they do not realize they are being observed by the natives on shore.

After they weigh anchors, Hal goes on an exploratory dive with his camera. The casks of jewels, gold and other treasure litter the sea bottom. They spend the next few weeks laboring to harvest as much of it as they can, as well as what's on the other ships. After they finish with the last load, Hal stays below a while to take some more underwater footage. Suddenly, he finds himself surrounded by killer whales. (At least, that's what the text calls them. They actually look more like sperm whales!) Then, Ogra and Gorgo show up to prey on the whales. Hal gets footage of the battle then pulls the signal rope to be brought to the surface.

As he is telling Jan about what he saw, and how his film will exonerate Chips, the Dorsetts suddenly find themselves staring at the business end of Pete and Monk's guns. "It's the end of the line for you," Pete says. Just as he is about to pull the trigger, Ogra and Gorgo surface near them, growling.

Panicking, the two thugs forget about Hal and Jan and use the big deck gun to fire on the monsters. The Dorsetts escape on one of the two powerboats while the thugs are distracted. The guns only make the Gorgos angry, of course, and they vent their rage on the Shark. Pete and Monk barely escape in time using the second power boat. They head to shore… where the Eskimos are waiting.

Meanwhile, Hal and Jan head out the same passage they entered through. Two weeks later, weak from hunger and exposure, they are picked up by a fur schooner. Hal still has the film and, after it has been shown to the proper authorities, Chips is set free. Pete and Monk are never heard of again.
