- News - Montreal's FantAsia Festival shows a number of Japanese sci-fi films to capacity crowds, including Destroy All Monsters, Gamera Guardian of the Universe, and Godzilla vs the Smog Monster. Centropolis refuses to commit to a Summer 1998 release date for the TriStar 'Godzilla' film. Toho has apparently backed off on their threatened suit of the organizers of Kaiju-Con '96. Gamera Guardian of the Universe is playing in select cities in North America, including Chicago and Los Angeles, while G2 is drawing large crowds in Japan. Frankie Saki passes away at the age of 67. Patrick Stewart gives Godzilla a lifetime achievement award at the MTV movie awards. Penthouse magazine reports that Toho received 15,000 letters of protest for killing Godzilla in their recent film. Sci-Fi Channel airs a 'Godzilla Week', showing King Kong vs Godzilla, Godzilla on Monster Island, Godzilla vs the Smog Monster, Destroy All Monsters, Mothra, King Kong Escapes, and Godzilla vs the Cosmic Monster. Columbia TV plans a new Godzilla cartoon series to follow the release of the TriStar film. Reaction to news of the new Mothra film is one of disappointment on both sides of the Pacific
