Godzilla vs the Space Monsters: Earth Defense Directive

Story by Kaoru Mabunchi

A plane flying to Tokyo is suddenly caught in a freak hail storm. As a stunned crew watches, the monster Gigan flies past their craft and disappears as abruptly as the storm. The pilot of the plane, a man named Okamoto, heads to Science Land's Godzilla Tower to relate what he has seen and get the authorities to investigate this new monster. In the control room, a strange call comes in for Okamoto. The weird voice has somehow known that Okamoto would be there, although he told no one. The voice identifies itself as Alien Miko and claims control of the monster Okamoto saw, and states his intention to rule the skies over Japan.

Several days later, JSDF fighters chase the monster Gigan, but the chase turns into a massacre when a second monster, Megalon, arrives. The few survivors ditch their planes and escape to a lonely island. Megalon pursues, trying to find the men. Instead, the space monster is attacked by Anguirus. As Anguirus begins to beat Megalon, Gigan arrives to double-team the dinosaur beast. When Godzilla arrives, however, the two cyborgs break off and retreat. At the same time, the squadron leader gets a strange message over his communicator.

Once again, the voice of Alien Miko claims control of the skies over Japan. Looking up, the pilot sees the mammoth creature Miko has described as his horse, King Ghidorah!

Miko's space monsters begin their reign of terror, destroying satellites and bringing air traffic to a halt across the globe. Miko warns that if the Earth does not submit to his domination, he will soon destroy the city of Tokyo as a taste of things to come.

The Space Monsters arrive at Science Land, surrounding Godzilla Tower and preparing for battle, thinking the structure to be the real Godzilla. But the real Godzilla arrives before they can attack, surprising them all. Just as mysteriously as before, the space monsters retreat without giving battle.

Miko's monsters next appear in Tokyo and the alien brain announces that his monsters will be taking control of first Tokyo, New York and Moscow, as a prelude to conquering the entire world. The defense forces engage the monsters and Gigan is soon attacked by Anguirus. But when Godzilla again arrives, the space monsters abruptly retreat once more. Later, Miko, a disembodied brain, appears on television, telling viewers that he withdrew his monsters to prevent further damage to the city and that most of the carnage was caused by Godzilla and the military. He again warns the people of Earth to surrender.

Thinking that his grotesque form is disturbing his would-be slaves, Miko decides to acquire a body. He decides upon Majin Tuol, a massive Incan idol from the Palace of the Gods in the Andes Mountains that is on exhibit in Science Land. Miko orders Gigan to cut the statue in half with his buzz saw so that the alien's life support machine may be inserted within. The monsters arrive at Science Land, but are again confronted by Anguirus and Godzilla. During the ensuing battle, Gigan breaks away and reaches the idol. But as he cuts the statue, a trickle of blood oozes from its forehead. The idol transforms into a towering war god and Majin Tuol enters the combat, badly injuring Gigan with his sword. The tide of battle turns. As King Ghidorah tries to escape, Majin Tuol flings his sword into the air, badly wounding the space demon. Seeing that they are no match for all three of their enemies, Gigan, Megalon and King Ghidorah flee back into space, leaving Miko behind. Godzilla incinerates the alien brain with a blast of his atomic fire. Majin Tuol returns to his pedestal at Science Land, only the scar on his stone forehead giving evidence that he was ever alive.

History:

This was another of the scripts submitted in answer to producer Tomoyuki Tanaka's call for a new King Ghidorah script following Godzilla vs the Smog Monster. Although most all of these elements would not make it into the final film, Godzilla on Monster Island, the Godzilla Tower, Science Land, and Godzilla's alliance with Anguirus would feature in the film that was eventually made and the monster Megalon would appear later in 1973's Godzilla vs Megalon.
