With Godzilla vs King Ghidora performing far above expectations, Toho considered bringing back the three-headed terror for an encore performance. No Futurian-controlled mutated trio of Dorats this time, this treatment called for a King Ghidorah that was once again an alien demon from outer space. However, some at Toho thought that having two vastly divergent Ghidorahs with different origins and abilities in two separate films released back to back would confuse the audience, and instead opted to bring back Godzilla's other most popular foil, the insect deity Mothra.
